So, this fellow's name kept cropping up in WWII histories and I finally found this book. It is very useful, to say the least. Having a close study of Finland available helps one to really appreciate the bizarre nature of the European war (and perhaps any war). Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place. The book also does a good job of demonstrating the already complex ethnic and class relationships in this country, where Finns were walking on eggshells between Swedish-speaking nobility and the increasingly grabby nature of imperial Russian politics.Mannerheim is a notable embodiment of all these problems, and that he preserved Finnish independence against not only Nazi Germany but also Soviet victory in the east should really be a better known story. Meanwhile, what the reader of this book gets as a bonus is Mannerheim's younger life exploring Asia. How this Indiana Jones of WWII politicians has escaped a Johnny Depp film is a mystery.P.S. The only audio known of Hitler speaking in conversation was made when he was visiting Mannerheim. Easy to find online.

This is a very well written and interesting book on an outstanding man. If it were not for him Finland would have been gobbled up by Soviet Russia in the 1939/40's. That he, with a small and under-equipped army, and no help from the outside democratic world (which expressed mostly sympathy and outrage at the Soviets) managed to keep Finland free is an amazing achievement. Mannerheim himself was very reticent about his role ( in his diaries) and the author is to be congratulated on giving a vivid picture of the man and his deeds.

My entire knowledge of Mannerheim came from my reading on the Winter War and WWII. Mannerheim was 72 at the start of these and had lived a quite interesting life before that, which gave him much of the background needed to fight those two wars. Of particular interest, and covered well in this book, was his two year reconnaissance across China as a Russian spy pretending to be a Swedish archeologist. I quickly got caught up in this book, and ended up reading it faster than intended.

Good book and well written. Wasnt dry like I thought it would be.. But as other reviewers have said as well, way too much time was taken up on his China trip. The 1918 civil war, Winter war, Continuation war and Lapland war were crammed into maybe a chapter or so. Seemed like the author wanted to just hurry up and get the book done when it came to that. If you know that going into it, its still a good book and I learned quite a bit from it.

So much more than just a person story. It's really a history story that explains easily the 20th century and the how and why's of what we went thru. Would say this is required reading for any history buff of world war 2 or any one doing ancestry work in the scandanavian countries and including Russia.

Very interesting biography of Field Marshall Mannerheim. Learned allot about his life and how it prepared him for his heroic leadership of the Finns in their battle against the Soviet Invasion.

Probably no leader was more improbable that Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim. He was part of the old line Swedish nobility that to this day still make up a tenth of the population of Finland. Though he was fluent in Swedish, Russian, and French for most of his life, he only learned Finnish in his 50s and then when he was the chief military leader of Finland. He was cavalry officer in time in which horses were becoming obsolete in modern warfare. He was an aristocrat in a time in which democratic and totalitarian processes were seeping into the political firmament (much to confusion of Mannerheim). This multi-faceted life is given the full treatment in Jonathan Clements' biography, Mannerheim: "President, Soldier and Spy."Mannerheim's career as a soldier began in the imperial Russian army. This career narrowly came off. He was expelled as a cadet from an institution that now features his picture on the wall of every classroom. Mannerheim embodied the high living Chevalier Guards lifestyle in the Russian capital. If one looks closely at pictures of Tsar Nicholas II's coronation, there is Mannerheim standing to his right. Mannerheim did not have a problem as a Finn serving in the Imperial Army. In his home in Helsinki, which operates as a public museum, there are autographed pictures of the Romanovs on the piano and elsewhere. Had the 1917 revolution not taken place, Mannerheim could have lived out his life as a member of the Russian military.Clements' biography largely follows the traditional narrative of other biographies of Mannerheim and relies in some sections on secondary sources. However the section that sets this book apart is the one that deals with Mannerheim's career as a spy in China. Following the Russo-Japanese, there was some concern about China and whether or not it could prove to be as problematic in the Far East as Japan had been. Mannerheim's characteristic take on the struggle for influence in Far East with Japan that it was perfect example of how not to fight a war. Mannerheim had two outstanding talents, which served him well in this expedition, the ability to choose good horses and outstanding skill at map-making. Both would stand him in good stead as he moved along the Silk Road into China and played his roleMannerheim was attached to a French archeological expedition by way of cover. This was probably not the best fit had authorities been more alert. Mannerheim and Paul Pelliot frequently clashed as they made their way to China. Although Mannerheim sent back a number of artifacts to Finnish museums (and as the contents of his house illustrate, bought back a number of things himself), Mannerheim missed out on the cache of Silk Road era documents at Dunhuang. These documents, which are one of the greatest archeological finds of the 20th century made Pelliot's reputation. Although Mannerheim failed to realize their value, Pelliot did not. It was one of the few times in which Mannerheim missed out on something.Mannerheim's great moment came when he left his career as soldier behind and as former general of the Tsar's Army moved to preserve the independence of Finland as it sought to safeguard its independence from Soviet Russia.Mannerheim was essentially the spirit of counter-Revolution in 1918 and was perhaps the only effective resistance to the Communists. He was also the only competent military leader that the White Finnish government could muster at this point. Along with being the father of the Finnish nation, Mannerheim is also the father of the Finnish military. The inter-war years were a bit of a disappointment for Mannerheim. He managed to secure recognition for Finland at the Versailles treaty, but his domestic political career was largely unsuccessful. In the future, whenever it looked as though Finland would vanish from the map, the Finns would turn to Mannerheim as the savior of the nation and Mannerheim, true to his aristocratic heritage would play this role time and again.Mannerheim served as commander in chief of the armed forces up to the outbreak of hostilities in 1940. He did try and warn his political masters that Finland could not stand up to the might of the Red Army and urged them to attempt a compromise of some sort since the Russians were starting to make demands for territory in Karelia and elsewhere. Mannerheim had resigned when Moscow invaded in 1940, but soon assumed the duties of Finland's war chief.Understanding just how little tactics had changed in the Russian military from Tsarist times to 1940 would prove invaluable in constructing a viable defense of Finland. Knowing that the infantry would be placed behind the tanks, a move that was totally unsuited for the forest fighting that made up the Winter War, enabled Mannerheim to construct a program of hit and run tactics that undermined Soviet planning and maintained Finnish independence. Mannerheim understood the need to bloody the Soviets in order to conclude a peace that left Finland independent and avoided the fate of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.War between Germany and the Soviet Union led to Finland to resume its conflict with the Red Army. Acting on the principle of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" led the Finns to make concessions to Nazi Germany to recapture territory lost during the Winter War as the primary objective of what is known as the "Continuation War." Mannerheim as marshal of Finland worked himself relentlessly and probably endured more than might be expected from a man in his seventies. Perhaps his greatest trial was when Adolf Hitler dropped in for his 75th birthday. Mannerheim despised an upstart such Hitler and underscored this disdain by smoking in front of the German leader, something few others ever even considered,When it became clear that Germany would lose the war, Mannerheim became president of Finland. He negotiated a ceasefire that ensured that Finland would remain independent, probably his greatest monument.Although this biography of Mannerheim is predictable in some ways, it is also very well written and Clements does have a great deal of material on Mannerheim's pre-revolutionary experiences in Central Asia and China. This book is well worth reading.

"Mannerheim", his name has always fascinated me. Who was this man with a German-sounding name and whose side was he on? All I knew was his involvement with Hitler and the war that took place in Finland so when I became aware of this book and read some of the reviews, I had to lay my hands on a copy. I paid quite a high price for it but now, being three quarters of the way through it I consider it one of my better purchases. His life encompassed so much of the history of my life time and his life experiences were so interesting; breathtaking, in a few instances life threatening; that I despair that he was so frustrated by his opponents in his beloved Finland. Now the Finns honor him, now that Finland has been ground down by the Russian presence. Read this book and learn about a fascinating man of many accomplishments and ever-present danger of "Russification".

For any company or executive that wishes to conduct business internationally and does not yet have a program in place to do this, The Culture Map should be required 101 reading, because otherwise you're just winging it. In fact, I will recommend it to all my clients when they grow international sales forces (just as it was recommended to me for that reason). The content is common sense, the framework is easy to grasp, and the author has collected years of anecdotal observations appropriate for widespread relevance. She's clear and diagnostic in her advice and communication. Solid credibility, expertise and content. Get the book, read the book, full stop.But.Two giant and important stars docked as an alert to potential buyers of the audio portion of the book, which I would rate a zero were there not a text version available. Stop reading now if you were only going to buy the text version.Three irredeemable strikes against the audio version undermine Ms. Meyer's excellent efforts:1) The voice. As a business professional, you expect an authoritative presentation, much as you would experience during a conference or training session. You do not expect to be "read to" like a child attending a library reading. Yet the sing-songy community-theatre performance sounds just like the latter. (In fact, would be great at voicing schoolbooks to bring education to life.) This kills any notion of serious executive authority.2) The presentation. Because the narrator is obviously not versed in the language of business (let that sit for a moment...) she presents topics that are fundamental and crisp enough in writing as overly pedantic and breathless epiphanies. If you come across this sentence in the middle of an everyday business book paragraph - "One crucial principle to remember is that communicating is not just about speaking but also listening." - in context, a reader can reasonably assume we've finished with discussing the speaking topic, and we're transitioning over to the listening topic. However, the narrator naively presents this like it's a knowledge bomb you've never heard before -- ARE YOU WRITING THIS DOWN?? -- making the topic level seem more elementary and basic than you thought.3) I've saved the most surprising - and most egregious - for last. I'm still kind of not believing it myself.During the numerous multi-cultural examples, the narrator acts out the quotes from various cultures like puppet-show skits... by using mildly offensive, badly-impersonated foreign dialects in fake-broken English. Think of every cartoon stereotype, and it's re-enacted in this audiobook. I can't even begin to put my head around how the decision was made in developing a "how to communicate professionally across international cultures" book that it's OK to categorically lump entire countries into an inexpert caricature of their languages. Hey, it's not me being overly sensitive: it's pointing out the irony of this conscious decision in an international communication handbook!Maybe in the finale (I am having trouble getting through it) the narrator will surprise us in the audience with the revelation that the audio performance was just a parable to teach one of the "practical strategies for handling cross-cultural missteps" that the book promises and otherwise delivers on.We are business readers and we expect business value, not a sugar-coated lesson from Mary Poppins. To be clear, Mary Poppins is the definitive darling and a greatly loved character - but not a business trainer. Please, please narrate this book yourself, just as you train and present and educate. Please tell me this was a V1. Please tell me it was a joke.

Really good for international relations. I work in a global role. I can't tell you the number of times I've had a German, an American, and a Chinese person all on the same call. The cultures are so different that the interactions can quickly go awry. The German will be the most abrupt, seeming to interrupt, being totally blunt, and not realizing he could offend. The Chinese will be the quietest, waiting to ask their turn to speak, sometimes having an underlying meaning behind the words that isn't blunt, and being very careful to not offend. The American will be in the middle. What could happen is that the Chinese person finds the German to be a rude, heartless boor. The German will think the Chinese person not forceful, not direct enough, and pussy-footing around. The reality is, we all have different cultural heritages which overlay our perceptions that we aren't fully aware of. Meyer has worked quite a bit internationally and has 8 attributes where the different cultures are put on various continuum. After reading this, I came away being more effective in my global interactions and have now led several discussions successfully. And of course, learning to be aware of my own cultural issues...

This book really is for everyone, not just the traveler, or international business guru, I highly recommend this read. I found it insightful and helpful as I prepared to spend time studying abroad for my MA. I also believe this is a great resource for anyone in higher education. Having spent the last 11 years working at a University I see multiple applications to the diversity a college campus often fosters.Myers says, "The point here is that when examinging how people from different culture relate to one another, what matters is not the absolute position of either culture on the scale but rather the relative position of the two cultures. It is this relative positioning that determines how people view each other." In other words, you can't claim someone is a specific way without understanding the person you are describing them to more fully. For example, if I say "she is friendly" to both a very quiet person and to a vocal extrovert the expectations they develop may vary. One version of friendly might look very laid back and smiley, while the other looks more chatty and charismatic. I plan to use this resource for all levels of culture mapping both when abroad and on my home base.

I used this as a textbook for an undergraduate cross-cultural studies class in an international business management program. The book was relevant to the course for these students. The author gave multiple examples involving diverse countries from her own experience and qualitative research. The majority of the examples were European and US-based but also included several Asian cultures and a few examples from South and Central America. Very few examples were given from nations in Africa. What I appreciate most about Meyer's work was that each cultural approach was appropriate in its own setting. There are no "right" or "wrong" cultural practices. She highlights the difficulties encountered when one person or group works with another person or group that has different expectations. She provides strategies for managers working with multi-cultural teams and strategies for those working cross-culturally with a team from a culture different than their own.The author mentions several of Hofstede's dimensions and I supplemented the course with additional information from Hofstede's study. The visual diagrams were enlightening especially when comparing countries with multiple scales. As is usual when studying other cultures, the students had insights into their own cultural approaches.

Pohl — Asbury Theological Seminary "John Kilner's comprehensive and engaging work brings fresh insight to a central but often misunderstood and misused concept. His careful biblical, theological, and moral reflection on being in the image of God is exceptional — a major contribution to the discussion."Dennis P. Hollinger — Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary "This masterful treatment of the image of God is not abstract theology removed from everyday reality; rather, as Kilner shows, what's at stake is human dignity in every sphere of life. A clear and cogently argued work that will become the major source for future explorations of the topic."Sondra Wheeler — Wesley Theological Seminary "In this richly documented text John Kilner makes a case for the theological centrality and historical impact of the idea that humans are made in the image of God - for good but also for ill. . . . All readers will be enriched by Kilner's thoughtful argument and challenged by his exploration of the potency of an idea."Scott B. Rae — Talbot School of Theology, Biola University "The most exhaustive study of the image of God of which I am aware. . . . I especially appreciate Kilner's Christological emphasis. . . . This will become the new standard reference work on the subject, particularly given its rich documentation throughout."Brent Waters — Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary "A masterful book on the important biblical concept of the imago Dei, which has too often received cursory treatment. The breadth and depth of Kilner's scholarship are impressive, and his carefully crafted work is simultaneously astute and engaging. . . . Students and theologians will be consulting his Dignity and Destiny for years to come."Erin Dufault-Hunter — Fuller Theological Seminary "Kilner carefully demonstrates how theological convictions about the image of God matter profoundly for Christian life and witness. . . . Convincingly shows how poorly conceived or sloppy exegesis not only hampers an individual's love for God and others but also creates an ethos that reinforces broad injustices ranging from racism to disregard for those with disabilities."Daniel R. Heimbach — Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary "A well-analyzed, nicely written study of the single most important truth undergirding respect for human life. . . . Our society, including the church, has a spotty record dealing with moral challenges — racism, poverty, gender roles, abortion — which are skewed by distorted views of what it means for us to bear the image of God. Kilner's book gives a soundly biblical understanding that can address these shortcomings."Themelios "Dignity and Destiny is a masterful treatment of the imago Dei doctrine. John Kilner, in this magnum opus, advances the discussion through careful historical and biblical research on one of the most significant and complicated areas in the history of theology."Journal of the Christian Institute on Disability "Readers of this book should expect to be challenged. They will likely recognize ways in which they themselves have spoken about the imago Dei — ways which turn out to be inadequate, inaccurate, and (in some cases) even harmful. If taken seriously, the argument of this book has potential to catalyze a major paradigm shift in how the church thinks about, speaks of, and acts in regard to the image of God — with powerful implications for its interactions with various marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities."Books at a Glance "A rich treatment of the theological doctrine of what it means for all humankind to be created in, and bear, the image of God. . . . Kilner has produced a very fine, scholarly work that is quite obviously well researched, will prominently stand out in the literature on the imago Dei, and will be a valuable asset for the church."Fred SandersChristianity Today "Kilner handles the doctrine of imago Dei in a way that has been badly needed. Carefully holding the doctrine to its foundations in Scripture, he painstakingly documents a host of unwarranted extrapolations that theologians and preachers have let themselves construct. What's left after his thorough work of demolition? Plenty. The way has been cleared for the doctrine of the image of God to help guide our thinking about human nature."Midwest Book Review "A powerful survey that will attract theologians and Christian readers interested in philosophical and spiritual reflection."

I picked up this book shortly after it came out. I was hoping to find some useful material for my Doctor of Ministry thesis. What I found was the best book I've read on the imago Dei. Kilner builds a solid theological concept grounded in the history of this doctrine. He takes the time to explain the approaches of other theologians before sharing where he feels they have weaknesses in their theory and then he posits his own approach. Most definitely worth reading.

Thorough, but quite dry. Never truly provides a clear support for his thesis after demonstrating the flaws in opposing views.

This title is important work on the Biblical concept of the Imago Dei, It truly could be considered the reference work on the Image of God. Nearly 70 pages of reference sources and at least a third of each page are the footnotes and explanation of John F Kilner, who is the endowed Franklin Forman Chair of Christian Ethics at Trinity International University. As the church librarian with little background in Christian doctrine, I found it to be a very hard read, it is a reference work for the serious student. Many misunderstandings about what it means to be created in God's image have wreaked devastation throughout history, and this author tackles every one of the major events in history and their relation to this study.People from the beginning of time have tried to place themselves in God's place and role the world, whether it is to justify slavery, or find fault in imperfect people like women, disabled, different cultures, native cultures. These attempts of sin to dispose people to dispose other by placing themselves in the "Image of God". Romans 8:29 stated that "For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, and that he might be the firstborn among many brethren."What a thought provoking study. I wish I had the background to appreciate this fine work. It was interesting as far as I could understand it.
