Emerson writes well, for the most part, and sometimes he even writes the truth. His prose can turn purple, he often repeats himself and at times he writes utter nonsense. His view of God is of an impersonal, indifferent god. This was the fashion amongst the western elites in the 19th century. This is not God as understood by the Jews, Christians and Muslims. For all that, Emerson is worth reading; if for nothing else, to understand a very important strand of philosophy in American thought. The ripples from the Transcendental movement are felt down to our own day.

Emerson is the kind of thinker and writer whose thoughts are so profound and timeless that you can't resist marking up the volumes of his books, or dog-earing the pages, or at the very least, copying passage after passage of his wisdom and practical take on life into your journal or day book. I believe that the Essays and Journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson are essential reading for everyone, everywhere, in every generation, now, yesterday, and for generations to come. He is one of our national treasures and certainly among the top greatest thinkers and writers that this country has ever produced. As the noted essayist, Phillip Lopate, wrote in his recently published Portrait Inside My Head, I, too, am in love with Emerson! One becomes a better person by having read him. And then returned to read him again. And then again.

This is a poorly edited collection of essays. The pages are not numbered. There is no table of contents or index either. The formatting seems thoughtless, with new sections starting in the middle of a line with no spacing at all.The very last page is extremely puzzling, a list of random seeming words thus:Danny~enwikisourceBeeswaxcandleThomasBotZhaladsharetc.

This volume provided a wide selection of very thought-provoking and peaceful poems, as well as a excerpt from one of Emerson's famous essays. I have been reading from the Harvard Classics list and my brains were so scrambled by the really old Greeks and the classic English writers and those who prefer to write like them.I wept with joy when I read Emerson. He is supposed to have been the first author to write as an American writes. So I don't know how much of the joy I felt in reading his works had to do with what I had been reading before but Emerson writes lyrically and compared to others from his day, sparsely.

I wish I had more intelligence to be able to comprehend all the sage writings of Emerson. Sometimes I had problems understanding him fully. He believed that humanity participates in Nature and that all objects are part of nature's whole but each is particular in itself. Man can be greater than he is. He made many good points. Have to take time to absorb and ponder when reading his essays.

I collect all these beautiful poem books by Everyman library. I do love Emerson, even though Poe did not. His poems are brilliant!

Here is a good sampling of Ralph Waldo Emerson writings. After reading a few, you will wonder why he is not more popular today. At least a few of these essays should be required reading in high school and beyond. Excellent writing and great insights from a relatively well known but seldom visited American philosopher. Highly recommended for anyone on an inner journey.

What I found most engaging about this book was the author's refusal to make comparisons between persons and events of today with those of ancient Rome. This is a favorite pastime among those who do not understand the vast differences between Roman society and our own; between modern politicians and those of Imperial Rome. Then why read about long dead Roman emperors? For pure pleasure, I would think. While Barry Strauss is skeptical of the "juicy stories" recounted by Suetonius in his classic history, The Twelve Caesars, readers who enjoy gossip and National Enquirer-type rubbish should read the ancient historian himself. He's a lot of fun. Incidentally, the author's dreamy prologue about a night on the Palatine reminded me of Edward Gibbon's own autobiographical recollection of musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol on October 15, 1764, and deciding to write about the decline and fall of the city of Rome. Look where that went!

I never thought I'd be saying this, but this book isn't clinical enough. There is a certain tendency to romanticize rulers (the longer ago they ruled, the more romanticized they often are), but Strauss goes beyond the admittedly few writers I've read. There are also more assumptions than I'm accustomed to. Things like, "[Tiberius] was good at hiding what he felt when he had to," remind me that a lot of this stuff is completely unverifiable and you just sort of have to take the author's word for it and go along for the ride.This is clearly well researched and Strauss is absolutely an expert, I just wish there was a happy medium between what I read of the book and my western civ textbooks in high school. I love a good story, but I also want to feel like I'm being taught something, if that makes sense.The great thing about this book, though, is that you can skip around. It doesn't have to be read especially quickly or in any particular order. You can simply say, "I think i want to know more about Tiberius" and crack open the appropriate chapter on him.Overall, I'd say this is great entry level history and it is specific enough to appeal to many people looking to dip their toe into the massive pool that is the Roman emperors.

That may sound odd about a book covering events two millennia ago, but it’s true.There’s another reason to welcome Barry Strauss’s new book—and that involves the millions of small groups that meet each week in congregations nationwide. These groups have all kinds of names, including Sunday School, or Bible Study, or Prayer Group, or Men’s Group. What they have in common are regular meetings and, often, these groups either discuss the Bible—or agree to read and discuss other books related Christianity. Those are millions of men and women with an ongoing interest in what happened in the Roman Empire, the era of the New Testament and the early church.Then, is this book too shallow? My answer: No!I’m a journalist who has reported from Rome on a number of occasions, so I already know a lot about these Caesars. He lets us enjoy ourselves with the narrative.Overall, his new book feels like an invitation to sit in a classroom with a popular teacher who will carry us through dramatic events as a sweeping storyteller. Along the way, he pauses to sort out the conflicting opinions we hear from other sources about this era. Sometimes he debunks myths. Sometimes he admits that there’s really no way of settling a particular dispute, at the moment.His aim is always to engage us. As a veteran author, he understands that our time is limited and we are torn between a myriad of distractions. So, Strauss has focused here on emperors who crop up frequently in news, in popular TV shows and in Christian discussion groups. I was part of the ground forces during Desert Storm, which breached the defensive line of Iraq. Being on the ground, we practiced and prepared for our mission while being in a vacuum as to how the overall air campaign was going. This book was insightful as to the air missions, and the risk for our aircrews, particularly the F-15E's. The book is well written and makes one feel they are in the cockpit with the crews. Thank you for your insight and a historical perspective of what these brave aviators did for the freedom of Kuwait and the pride of our nation.

It has been over 20 years now since I went with our F15Es to Oman and then to" Al's Garage". As enlisted men and women in POL, we filled these pilots planes with fuel and watched them take off, not knowing where they were going, and hoping they all came back. Some of them did not come back. Some planes I saw riddled with holes. I saw pilots get out of their planes with smiles and fist pumps, and some with blank stares on their faces. This book answered my questions about what happened out there when you left the comforts of our tent city paradise. We all knew this was a kick ass plane and many of us collected the bomb pins from the planes upon their return. I would have liked to hear more about the first night the air campaign started. I have never heard or seen anything more spectacular in my life with all the jets starting at the same time, the taxi way looked like a parade of Strike Eagle lights, and taking off with afterburners in the midnight sky until we could not see you any more. It was a very impressive show of force that gave us all goose bumps on the flight line. Thumbs up to this book! And thumbs up to all the Air Force personnel that kept these planes up in the air in Oman and Al Kharj.

I gave this book four stars, not because it is a bad book, but because the A-10 book by the same author set the standards way up high. But let's not talk about the A-10, but of the high-tech F-15E Strike Eagle. This book tells a compelling history of how an untested aircraft (not even certified at the time to drop some kinds of bombs) was rushed into battle and performed beautifully. This book showed me that I had the erroneous idea that the powerful, high-tech, well equipped U.S. war machine has everything set and figured out is not true when things get real, and pays homage to those people who were really heroic in creating bases that did not existed before, and fundamental to make the squadrons work despite all the difficulties and the changing nature of warfare.And for those in the cockpit, tells the histories of how tactics had be changed, literally, on the fly, to fill the demands of the tactical and political backgrounds. A very good book, that in some moments, makes you feel like you are inside the cockpit reliving those events.

Very good description of Desert Storm F-15E operations from people directly involved. The author compiled pilots and WSOs testimonials that paint a very realistic picture of F-15E employment and difficulties people flying it faced.What I could do without are political undertones evident predominantly in the author's commentary. That kind of bias is common in this kind of literature, and understandable, given the circumstances. However, keeping this bias in check is what separates good writing from great writing.

I was part of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing (Medical) and deployed to Thumrait with a few hours notice. I knew most of the folks in this book especially Tom Koritz and Jack Ingari, both Flight Surgeons. It was a great recap and very interesting account of what the air crews went thru! Great read! Thanks!

Awesome book I am an Aviation geek my self love airplanes. This book is geared toward fight pilots used good amount of lingo that I myself had to look up. Very good read recommend if you are into any aviation.

This was a well put together collection of stories from real American heroes. I feel I have a better understanding of just how challenging it is to keep a military edge.

Like going on a mission with these guys. I found myself in the first person as I strapped in teh ejection seat to fly these real sorties against the enemy. Could actually see the aa in my minds eye. This is excellent writing at it's best.

Reading this book, explains some things left out of the canonized Biblical Books. There is also a running timetable. Towards the end, several things were clarified. The lamb was to be slaughtered, towards evening, on the 14th day, of the first month. Then the lamb's blood was used on the doorposts, and lintel, of the doorway, on the first third of the 15th. The new day began at sundown. Jesus, as the Lamb, was crucified on the 14th, then hurriedly taken down and placed in the garden tomb, before sundown, since the Passover day wouldn't have allowed any work to be performed. His blood became the blood on the doorposts, and lintel, as he was the door to eternal salvation. Just a side thought here, when the blood was placed on the lintel, it most likely dripped to the ground. Completing the head wrists and feet of Jesus.Most people accept that Jesus was crucified on a Friday and rose on a Sunday. I'm of the belief that he was crucified on the 14th, a Wednesday and placed in the tomb before sundown.Was in the tomb Thursday, Friday, and rose on Saturday, the third day, the Sabbath.Anyhow, this was an informative book, that gives an interesting account of the history of the Hebrews.

This book opened my eyes to what the church is not telling us about missing books of the Bible and the truths to the Most Highs Sabbaths and Holy Days. Jubilees is based on multiples of seven to the Most High God. 49 years is a Jubilee. The Most High also made it easy with seven days, seven months, seven years and how these account for Sabbaths and Feast days that no one seems to want to follow. The original year is supposed to be 364 days and when that's divided by 7, we have 52 weeks. 5 and 2 is 7. It's that easy and He made it like that for all mankind to follow and prosper.I recently read an article where humans are depleting the soil of minerals when farming and how we are not getting enough essential minerals in our diets. Now the Most High told us to let soil rest every seven years so that it can naturally replenish its minerals. However, misguided and ignorant man has decided to do his own thing defying the laws of the Most High that were given to us for our own good.Leviticus 25:4King James Version (KJV)4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the Lord: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

This is my second time purchasing the book of jubilees. I also plan on purchasing another one for someone else. This book does not stray away from sound biblical Doctrine, however it just adds to what we already know from the Bible by filling in the holes that were not explained in the Holy Bible.

Gives new insight into the Scriptures, though it was hard for me to follow sometimes, because everything is done in Jubilees time of 7 years and 49 years, but very detailed in the information that was presented. Every time I read a book that was left out of the Scriptures, it makes me wonder why was it left out. I have not found any of these books to detract from the Scriptures, but they only enhance the understanding of the Scriptures with more details about what GOD was trying to tell us, and prepare us for. Remember that the Scriptures were written for us but not to us, so these books help by giving us information that will help us to understand.

I found this book extremely interesting and informative. Like the Books of Enoch, while this book was never canonized into Western Bibles, it is a part of the Ethopic Bible, which has 81 books, instead of the 66 boobks of the Western Chritian Bible or the 72 books of the Catholic Bible. The Book of Jublies refers to time as measured from the 1st day of Creation, and it gives a lot more detail behind many characters from the Torah (1st 5 books of the Tanakh). It is very interesting to say the least, and a must read for serious theologians!

This is a good book; a translation. Historically, the Book of Jubilees was claimed to have been revealed to Moses but some claim that the book was simply a copy of the original Books of Genesis as found in the common Bible. Some label ancient books with similar stories as pseudepigrapha, material not suitable for inclusion in religious books.The Books of Jubilees, details the celebration of every Jubilee (49 years) since creation to Moses's adult life; about 2410 years. There is a lot of detail in The Book of Jubilees and I wonder how the ancient authors could have had such access to personal lives of those times. Its a good read for those interested in ancient history.

This book has been an amazingly eye opening completion to many missing parts of stories in Genesis. The book of Jasher is necessary to read as well in order to gain a fuller understanding. No wonder it's been hidden away from the rest of the Bible. I suggest anyone seeking a more complete understanding of the beginning of YAHUAH's Word read this book!

There are some typographical errors, but if you can over look this, it is a very informative read. I first read this book as a teenager because it was in my grandfather's library. He was a theologian, as was my father.

I’m thinking of taking computer classes and wanted to get a head start before beginning so I’m not lost when I start. I was looking for some sort of book that wasn’t written for computer geniuses so I could actually understand what I was reading. I’m not a total idiot and know what I’m doing for the most part but am far from an expert. I saw this one and after checking out the table of contents decided to give it a shot since it wasn’t too expensive and am glad that I did. It’s very easy to follow and covers a lot of subjects in detail and really cleared some things up for me. I’ll probably end up reading it again to get more out of it.

I got this book thinking I was going to give it to my mom to help her learn more about computers (and to save me some of that time spent answering her questions over the phone). But after I got it and started reading through it, I found that I was able to actually learn some new things from it. Some of the information is a little too advanced for my mom, but I'm going to have her read it anyway because there are some sections that she will really benefit from. If you are a computer dummy then reading this will definitely help to get you out of that category.

I have been using PC's since they were the size of an RV kitchen appliance - only a user, never an expert, and I've done more than my share of crying and swearing over all those funky things that can happen through the course of regular use. With no desire to understand everything about them, this book actually was ideal balance between a good overview and full technical explanations. I did learn more than I expected, and it will be a good, ongoing reference guide to doing my own basic troubleshooting before calling in the real (good) geeks.

I usually prefer the training video thing when it comes to learning new stuff but lately I have switched to books because they tend to go into more detail and its easier to go back and re-read something rather than rewind the video watch that section again. I got this and 3 other books for computer skills including and actual dummies book called PCs for Dummies but I like this one better because its more to the point and avoids all the extra stuff you don't care about.

I've read a few books on basic computer skills and this is one of the better ones. It covers a lot of topics and its pretty easy to follow. I like that is has a lot of screenshots showing you how to do things which makes it easier to follow.

If you like things explained to you without making you feel like an idiot then read this book!

I really ordered this because I want to strengthen my computer skills. This book is not doing it for me.I was hoping to see a diagram of the keyboard with explanation of the function (F) keys. None found.In other words specific needs were not addressed.

This book will help anyone figure out how to clean the "malware" out of their computer, any many other things.
