40 Days and 40 Nights: Darwin, Intelligent Design, God, OxyContin®, and Other Oddities on Trial in Pennsylvania, by Matthew Chapman

From Publishers Weekly

Chapman, Charles Darwin's great-great grandson and a successful Hollywood screenwriter, describes the 2005 intelligent design (ID) trial in Dover, Pa. The native-born Brit loves his adopted American home, but is terrified at the rise of a belligerent fundamentalism that seems to him invincibly ignorant and contemptuous of such scientific commonplaces as evolution. The 40 days and nights of the trial convince him that ID should indeed be taught in every science classroom in America: as an exercise in removing the kid gloves with which religion is treated in this country, science teachers should demolish ID before their pupils' eyes. The strength of the book is its function as an old-fashioned courtroom drama, which stays lively even as readers know how the trial will turn out. Chapman rightly describes himself as unable to "maintain animosity toward people with whom I violently disagree once I get to know them." He even checks his own agnosticism to compliment Jesuit theologian John Haught for having "the most beautiful mind in the whole trial." Chapman's exploration of the American soul finds not only cause for fear but also much that is good and decent. The book bogs down in forays into theology, which are marked by egregious misstatements about evangelicals in general (as opposed to just in Dover), and with a side story paralleling Dover with the Scopes monkey trial, which feels like a clunky addendum. From Booklist

Charles Darwin's great-great-grandson offers the second 2007 book--the first: Edward Humes' Monkey Girl--about Kitzmiller v. Dover, the 2005 federal trial of a public school board's stab at getting evolution-aversive intelligent design (ID) into the high-school science curriculum. Chapman is glad the board lost yet maintains that ID ought to be in the classroom, anyway, so that real science can shoot it down like in the courtroom. Fortunately, his flaky opinion follows a bang-up job of reporting the trial. A movie writer-director by trade, and unimpaired by higher education, Chapman is a raconteur of a writer who treats informants sympathetically and congenially (he interviewed many trial principals afterward) and addresses readers as comrades. No match for Humes at historical and scientific backgrounding, he edits the trial testimony masterfully as well as obviously, telling whom and what he omits. Despite his tasteless digs at large Catholic families, such as those of the board's legal team, and breathtaking ignorance (or casuistry) about Evangelical Christians, he will please more readers than Humes will. A re-telling of the court case in a Pennsylvania small town where the school-board was taken over by ultra-Christians with the intention of including Creationism disguised as Intelligent Design in the high school Biology classes to counter "Darwinism." The author is a great grandson of Darwin who, obviously, was very interested and attended the trial and the machinations leading up to it in the town. The trial itself was a melange of expert witnesses on both sides. It was revealed just how deceit was used by those professing belief in ID as actual science. But all science relies on factual experiments, observations and conclusions and ID was found lacking in these science requirements that are needed to justify teaching it in ant science classroom. And so the judge ruled. The flavor of this book comes from the portraits of the townspeople involved in the contest and those who wished it would all go way because the trial had gone national because of the issues involved. Touches of humor spice the narrative from time to time. The book represents theongoing disputes about religion and science and the choice of what is to be taught in public school to our children: the Bible or science.

Film writer and director Matthew Chapman has a few reasons to be interested in the trial of Kitzmiller v. Dover School Board. First, he is a direct descendant of Charles Darwin. Second, he has written before on issues of faith vs. science (Trials of the Monkey). Third, he is the type of writer inherently drawn to exploring characters. This third reason is what seperates this book from the several others profiling the "battle of intelligent design versus science." As other reviewers point out, books like Edward Humes's "Monkey Girl" and Gordy Sack's "Battle Over the Meaning of Everything" may be more journalistic, this book explores the characters. Chapman seems to have a face-to-face with every major (and minor) player on all sides.Beyond this, Chapman himself notes, "One of my chief defects - or better qualities, I'm not sure which - is that I find it almost impossible to maintain animosity toward people with whom I violently disagree once I get to know them." (loc. 490, Kindle edition) No matter how judgmental and acerbic Chapman can be - and he is both, strongly pro-evolution - Chapman paints all characters in as fair a light as possible. (One of the best parts comes later in the book, where Chapman reveals the very human side of Bill Buckingham, the perjurer and hot-headed leader of the Dover School Board that started the whole mess. You almost - ALMOST - empathize with the guy!)If Chapman's book explores the more human Dover, it doesn't make for anywhere near the gripping blow-by-blow account of Edward Humes' or Gordy Sacks' books. Whereas those are very matter of fact and linear, this book jumps from spot to spot, intertwining scenes from the trial with scenes from the school-board meetings to philosophic rumination. The other two books are more snappy and journalistic in tone, whereas this one (for good or bad) is warmer in tone, which doesn't make for a page turner. In the end, Chapman's book on a well-trodden subject DOES manage to set itself apart form the others by focusing on the characters more than the others. With Humes,' and Sacks' book (I have yet to read Lebo's), I feel like I understood the trial quite well. With this book, I feel like I understand Dover quite well.

I became fascinated with the Kitzmiller vs. Dover trial nearly three years after Judge Jones issued his ruling. From a number of Internet sites, I read a great deal about the trial including many pages of testimony and 35 to 40 pages of the 139-page ruling in favor of the plaintiffs. But much of that information, while fascinating, lacked the narrative quality that a screenwriter like Chapman could bring to the story. I decided to buy this book along with Gordy Slack's "The Battle Over the Meaning of Everything" to fill in some gaps in my knowledge and to try and understand the roles played by the Thomas More Law Center, the Discovery Institute, and the members of the Dover Board of Education. I was very happy that I did.Chapman is a decendent of Charles Darwin; a great-great grandson, in fact. He is also a screenwriter and his method of telling a story borrows the flashback idea from the movies. Occasionally, he'll pull some piece of information about a past event and bring it into current time in a manner that can be entertaining but, at times, annoying. His writing skill is first-rate and he has the flair of a novelist. For example, he writes "If the plaintiffs' legal team was a well-oiled collegial machine, the defense was a dysfunctional family with a frequently absent father". You don't get the sense that you are reading an account from a daily newspaper with a quip like that. However, I sometimes felt that if I had not made myself aware of a good deal of the background information concerning this case prior to reading his book, that I might feel, if not lost, that at least I was missing something. For that reason and for the disorienting flashback technique, I gave the book a 4-star rating - his storytelling ability would be worth 5-stars in my opinion.I enjoyed this book a little bit more than Gordy Slack's, though they cannot be directly compared as they approach the subject in quite different ways. Slack sounds, at times, like a guy writing for the Huffington Post, rather than a former editor of a natural history magazine. I say that with affection. His chapter on "Assembling Goliath", the pooling of elite resources by the plaintiffs' team, made me feel like I was watching Eisenhower discuss the invasion plans with his staff. Chapman, however, went to the current event and filled in whatever background info he chose to as the narrative of the trial moved along.Read in tandem, the two books give you a good sense of the trial, the outcome, the implications for years to come. Each is a very well-told tale.

Law and Literature: Third Edition

Review

With his usual astonishing range of interests, Richard Posner treats facets of 'law and literature' ranging from popular culture to copyright to whether reading great literature necessarily contributes to one's moral growth (and more besides). Every reader will be provoked, challenged, and illuminated by Posner's insights and arguments. (Sanford V. Levinson, author of Our Undemocratic Constitution: Where the Constitution Goes Wrong (And How We the People Can Correct It))This complex, superbly argued book remains a remarkable achievement and is made even more useful in this new edition. Richard Posner knows how much legal thinking can profit from the study of literary traditions and classic works of fiction. He also is acutely aware of the limits on the application of literary practice to the law. The bracing manner in which he debunks the sentimental notion that literature and--worse--literary theory are law's salvation is a pleasure to read. (Denis Dutton, Editor, Philosophy and Literature)[Posner] has written and rewritten the most comprehensive study of the connections between law and literature. (James Seaton Weekly Standard 2010-07-19)

A bit testy and sometimes more argumentative than instructive in laying out the field. He has a real antagonism toward the left who write in the field and goes on about it too much. He also says he is less judgmental in this edition about the books, but he certainly isn't. You know without a doubt what he considers mediocre or bad, and good. So it is not an even-handed book, but it does cover the field well enough to merit reading.

Well written book

Posner is not a dumb man, but early in this book he notes that the law and literature movement is so popular because it is a cheap way to hide shoddy scholarship. He certainly proves his point here. My hopes in this book were dashed early on by his "critical introduction," where he relates that "[l]aw and literature is a field with a wide remit" by using Howards End to show the ubiquity of legal issues in even a non-legal literary text. The examples he uses, though, are so superficially related to law (e.g., taking arguments among the protagonists as examples of poor legal reasoning or the contrast between justice and mercy) that I don't know why he bothered. He sometimes indulges in annoying tangents and bizarre readings of literary texts to promote his own agenda. His command of ancient Greek sources, the Bible, and Shakespeare is especially laughable, full of elementary mistakes and poorly worded generalities. Anyone who takes away from Antigone the message that "intense religious feeling can undermine social peace" or from Lear that the king's "failure to grasp the force of self-interest is his undoing" is seriously violating his own earlier recommendation to not make texts into what you want them to say. I tried to give this book a chance but after about the first third just couldn't take it anymore.

What's scary about this volume is the fact that the author sits as a judge near the pinnacle of our legal system. He reads literature as little more than a collection of affirmations of his own opinions, and then develops arguments, which give a superficial appearance of logic, to support his opinionated readings. Except for some cherry picking to support his readings, he generally ignores the vast body of scholarship on these works. He distorts basic facts about many of the works he chooses to write about, raising troubling questions about what he must do when he sits on the bench and decides the fate of actual people.

A wonderfully original and instructive study of what literature has to teach about the law, the methods of legal argument, and the interpretation of statutes and the Constitution.

Review

“Carlos Rodríguez writes with grace, and about grace. His book is a stunning invitation to look into the face of Jesus and see that the only One who had any right to throw a stone had no desire. We see in Jesus that the closer we are to God, the less we should want to throw stones at other people. This is nothing short of a call to reimagine Christianity as a faith that fascinates the world with love.”   —Shane Claiborne, author and activist  “I have a new favorite book and a new favorite writer. This book overflows with wisdom, honesty, joy, insight, and Jesus. It will fill your heart, right after kicking you in the backside. After you read it, I hope you’ll buy a dozen copies to give to all your friends, because we all need Drop the Stones.”   —Brian D. McLaren Author, The Great Spiritual Migration  “Carlos Rodríguez writes with honesty and urgency as he calls the church to live up to its high calling to embody the love of Jesus. Drawing on his own pastoral experience, and touching on contemporary issues from ISIS to mass incarceration, Drop The Stones invites followers of Jesus to let go of culture war clichés and do the hard things of Jesus-styled love.”  —Brian Zahnd Pastor, Word of Life Church, St. Joseph, MO Author, Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God and A Farewell to Mars  “Having been a student of Jesus and Scripture for nearly thirty years, I have come to the conclusion that the more conservative our belief in Scripture—that is, the more deeply we  believe that every word of it is true—the more liberal we will be in the way that we love. The more faithfully we walk the narrow path of Jesus, the more broad our embrace of fellow sinners will be. It is not in spite of our faith in Jesus that we love, listen to, and learn from those who do not share our faith, but precisely because of it. In a time when Christianity is often confused with separation, judgment, scorn, and exclusiveness, books like Drop the Stones are a needed correction, not to mention a welcome breath of fresh air. May we listen carefully to Carlos’s words. More importantly, may we order our lives around them.” —Scott Sauls Senior pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church, Nashville, TN Author, Jesus Outside the Lines, Befriend, and From Weakness to Strength  “In Drop the Stones, Carlos Rodríguez has, with candid and culturally relevant language, confronted the practical atheist in every professing Christian. The latent Pharisee in me was exposed more than once as I read the powerful and poignant stories contained within these pages. Thank you, Carlos, for ‘re-minding’ us with the mind of a loving and nonjudgmental Christ.” —Dr. Randall Worley Author, Brush Strokes of Grace and Wandering and Wondering  “Drop the Stones is a heart-wrenching, personal, funny, and terrifying look into the judgment toward others each of us harbors in our own soul. I’ll be insisting all my friends read this!” —Carl Medearis Author, Muslims, Christians, and Jesus  “Carlos Rodríguez shares powerful stories of transformation we all need to hear. He provides inspiration for what’s truly possible when we respond to the Holy Spirit. You’ll find great encouragement through these pages.” —Margaret Feinberg Author, Fight Back with Joy “Difficult days require honest and candid conversations from brave voices. This book is filled with wisdom and courage, able to guide us through the rough waters.” —Brady Boyd New Life Church, Colorado Springs Author, Addicted to Busy “I deeply value the message and timing of Drop the Stones. In this book, Carlos Rodríguez brings us back to the simple gospel by reminding us that if we want to see God clearly, we must watch Jesus closely.” —Seth Dahl Children’s Ministry Director, Bethel Church, Redding, CA

I simply can't recommend this easy-to-read book enough to Christians and non-Christians alike.A very wise man was confronted by a group of religious hypocrites and conspirators who sought to humiliate and expose him at the expense of a poor naked woman caught in the act of adultery... but where was the man?The confrontation and the wise man's response and the ultimate outcome and the author's probing questions and personal admissions encouraged me to identify with every single group in the famous narrative:1. The Woman2. The Hypocritical Accusers3. The Listening & Willing-to-Kill Crowd4. The Wise ManMy back yard is now filling up with dropped stones that are making a nice garden pathway...Thanks, Carlos Rodriguez, for encouraging me to Drop The Stones in my own hands... but only after you had dropped your own.

I am so excited about the release of "Drop The Stones." Carlos Rodriquez is a wonderful storyteller and writer. His stories draw you in because they are vulnerable, authentic, and full of hope. I've known Carlos for 17 years and watching him travel the journey from being someone who has become so authentic in his journey of falling down and getting up, walking out of his insecurities and pride, and learning to love his family and all of those around him has been amazing to watch. But he's not just telling a story about how he's "perfected" how to love, he's also honest in where he still fails. It's inspiring for those of us who look into the dark nooks and crannies of our lives - the ones that we have shame about - our own insecurities and failings, hoping for the light to shine into those areas so we can also learn to love ourselves, our families, and others.

I don't really read books, let alone finish them. I completed this one within a week. And geeze. I cried. A lot.Three thoughts I had over and over while reading Drop the Stones. Is Jesus really this kind?Am I really this selfish? But He's still this kind?Carlos intelligently and humorously brings Jesus to the present age by applying what we already know of the Christ to our modern day "first world problems", shining a light on the self righteousness that I have always wanted to attribute to "them". If you're looking for a new lens to view the world through, I suggest starting here.I caution you though, this book may ruin your life- for the better.

One of the best books that have helped me to know Jesus. Carlos speaks though a humbled perspective that gives true insight on how we are to look at others. Once you begin reading you will not be able to put it down as it draws out your judgmental viewpoints and replaces it with mercy. I am a better Christ imitator because of the revelation that Carlos brings forward in this book.

Can’t possibly say enough good things about this book. I first heard Carlos at reunion 18… And bought his book. I have a very full plate but absolutely cannot put this book down!! Seriously!! Now that I’m on the last third I’m so bummed and trying to ration out chapters because I don’t want the book to end!So radical! So good!! Carlos super humble and vulnerable. If you’re not up for being challenged in the way love people… This book is not for you. But if you are interested in loving radically as Jesus did and does, grab copy and hold on😊

This is one of my favorite books of the past year. The conversational style keeps the book moving and I felt personally challenged by nearly every chapter. In a time where judgment rules the day, this is a must-read.

I've never written a review about a book until now. I have a collection of books and bibles filling multiple bookshelves and include the contemporary as well as the classics, but Drop the Stones has been impactful and resonated with me in a way that few have. I learned of this book because I also love the writings of Jonathan Martin and saw that he had written the forward for this book. And the title itself intrigued me. I love the honesty, authenticity and vulnerability of the writing by Carlos Rodriguez. You just have to check it out. This is truly a must read.

I couldn't put it down. Alot to think about... Very well written.

I bought this for my sister's birthday and she loved It! My sister said she played with it later that day working on the mazes which makes me feel good that she is doing something besides looking at her electronic devices!

I knew I'd love this book! I read it in a day. Can't wait to read the next one! Didn't have a chance to listen to the audio book. Too bad I'd already paid for it
