I am officially giving up on this book at page 185. While both authors are undisputed authorities in Mayan civilization, this book has all the appeal of a research journal:- Instead of reasonably coherent and systematic top-down treatise of the Mayan civilization, we get "lumps" of lengthy and excruciatingly boring discussions of some specific detail or event in Mayan history, what evidence there is for it, and how it is supported by the graphics discovered.- The book is choke-full of very well done drawings of Mayan graphics that survived, but these drawings are barely annotated (the annotations that are present are of such kind an archaeologist would scribe for himself, much less for anyone else) and there is absolutely no attempt to explain it to someone who has not devoted his life to Mayan civilization research. I mean, it is great that you get an annotation like "sacrifice" pointing to an incomprehensible (to an uninitiated) jumble of lines, but that is as much explanation as you get.Here's a good analogy from the computer world (I know, geeks here): the book is akin to being handed a grimoire on PostScript language when all you need to do is to print a couple of documents.To summarize, if you are already well-versed in Mayan history, script, and culture, you would absolutely LOVE this book as it will greatly deepen your knowledge of specific events in Mayan history in a well supported, documented, and illustrated manner. If you are - like me - just want to learn more about Maya, their history, religion, culture, and maybe even get some very basic understanding of the principles of their writing system, this is probably not the book you are looking for.

Having just returned from the Yucatan Peninsula and explored Tulum and Chitzan Itza, this book is an extremely well researched and documented history of the Mayan Civilzation. Likely not one for the casual reader, but I'm a student of history and this definitely fills the bill.

When I was first introduced to "A Forest of Kings" by Linda Schele and David Freidel, I was, frankly, a bit suspicious. Another book on the Maya by a couple of well-meaning outsiders focusing on bloodletting and the mysterious ballcourts? I was surprised to find this book to be scholarly, highly readable and not goulishly focused on the bloodier aspects of this ancient culture. Their deft translation of Mayan pictographs and symbolism is very well done. The book is loaded with black and white line drawings of carvings and inscriptions with translations along side. There are detailed explanations of Mayan cosmology and an explanation of the calendar reputed to be the most accurate ever invented. It also includes extensive notes for each chapter. I don't know how else they could have been handled, but reading "A Forest of Kings" involved having several book marks at once, so I could read the notes, refer back to other illustrations and photos and keep my place in the text. Over all, it's fascinating reading for an amatuer who's fascinated with the Maya. I only wish I'd had this book when I visited the Yucatan!

My first love in archaeology was the reading about the ancient Maya. I still find information about their culture fascinating though I have never worked in that area in my archaeological experience. This is a very interesting book for those who want more than just a 'coffee table' view of Maya ruins and culture.

It is so sad that we have lost Linda Schele. But we can rejoice that we still have her wonderful books. This book is among her best. It is almost magical in the way she and David Freidel create the atmosphere of the Mayan culture. There are wonderful pictures and illustrations. She unfolds the stories of the archaeological discoveries and then helps us understand the real lives revealed in the evidence.The book also shows how the Mayan glyphs and counting systems work. There are nowadays very good texts on the writing system itself, but this book shows us how the glyphs are woven into the culture and religion of these people. We learn how the lineage worked and how the monuments were used as what we would call propaganda to support one line over other possibilities. We learn about the role of magic and visions and the way the leaders were the empowered by those visions.There is just so much here that any reader will be richly rewarded. The Mayan civilization is incredibly fascinating because it is so foreign to our own and yet it is a part of the heritage of the American continents.This book isn't just a text, it is a work of art in itself. You will have a hard time putting it down.

Color Index XL by Jim Krause I have a lot to learn about using a color index, but "Color Index XL" is definitely the place the start. As an artist I often rely on my eyes and feelings to guide me through the use of colors and color mixing, but emotions and feelings only get you so far. As the art world advances, more and more art is being done on computers and devices, and the knowledge of colors and their formulas is becoming more of a necessity. Even I, a painter by hand, have started to train myself in photoshop and illustrater. Doing so I'm finding a need to understand color formulas. It's very different from mixing liquid color by hand and praying the result is the color I'm looking for. I knew at first sight this book would be vital to my artistic library. Upon first look, flipping through the pages, I was absolutely impressed, and excited, but realized there is much to learn in order to understand all that I am looking at. Thankfully, Jim Krause gives you a very useful step by step guide to understanding the color index. There will still be many days spent learning all the ins and outs, but the hundreds of pages of color palletes will make this learning process all the more exciting. If you love color as much as I do, and want to boost your knowledge on CMYK and RGB formulas, then this book will not leave you dissapointed. There are literally hundreds of pallets right there at your fingertips. Colors can be nice and tricky. You think you have a good combo, but the mood is off. This book however, takes away a lot of guesswork.This book is basically an overview of thousands of different pallets. It is more of a reference books of colors. Not only does this book show many different colors and color combinations, but it also show how the colors look when you add changes like lighten the colors.Just through flipping through this book I was filled with all sorts of information. Not only that I can have a snce of what colors make which moods.I am a huge fan of this book. I can tell the author put a lot of time into gathering the colors and showing the reader how to create them. I really appreciate this.. There are so many uses for this book. Color Index XL is a useful tool for anyone who designs documents, websites, etc. Each palette in this book consists of five colors—which is perfect. As someone who regularly creates images for publicity purposes, I adhere to the policy that less is more. While two to three colors feels ideal, five verges on too busy. Thanks to Krause’s palettes, it’s easy to pick out the best color combination of the five depending on the mood that you want to convey. Not only does he dedicate each page to a single color palette, he also breaks that palette up into shades: bright, light, dark, and muted. In other words, just about every variety of color combination you can imagine!Just how will that color look on the printed copy? Krause’s book reduces the amount of “guesswork” that occurs when trying to select colors on the computer by showing you the final product on paper. (And let’s not forget to mention how thankful your eyes will feel scanning through physical pages as opposed to scrutinizing a computer monitor.) Within each palette, he also supplies the RGB (red/green/blue) formula that Microsoft Publisher and Word uses. As an added bonus, the book includes a section on color theory. I really hate to give the book a 1-star rating. I own a number of Ms. Yin-Fei Lo's other books (physical copies) and like them very much, but I have to add my complaint to the others about the publisher's callous disregard for blatant typos that make the Kindle version unusable.Most obviously, none of the fractions in the ingredients list display properly. For the most part, they show up only as the "fraction line", without numbers at all, though if I recall correctly, a few do display the denominator, but without the numerators! And it's not just fractions, regular numbers separated by hyphens are also screwed up. Ingredient quantities like (what I assume should be) "4-5 quarts water" for example, display without the first two characters at all (i.e., " 5 quarts water"). In many cases one can make an educated guess as to the missing number, but I wasn't about to keep the book - even though it's very inexpensive right now on sale - with such egregious formatting problems that have gone unresolved for at least 3 years.I'll also note that there at least appear to be other errors, though they're less obvious, and could conceivably just be unusual quantities of ingredients. But I do seriously question the ingredients entry in the "Chicken Stock" recipe, for example (the only one I noticed before returning the book for a refund), which calls for " 4 ounces" of coriander sprigs. Seriously? Multiple OUNCES? I live in NYC, which I mention only because we have many thoroughly authentic Chinese restaurants as well as the more generally common Americanized sort, and I've been eating Chinese food regularly and frequently since I was a kid (45 years ago), but I've never once tasted chicken broth with as strong an obvious flavor of coriander as that amount would give in the quantity of stock the recipe makes. If the author were unknown to me, I might just assume it was an "unusual" recipe, but as far as I've ever seen, Ms. Yin Fei-Lo's recipes are within "generally expected parameters", so in this case I can only assume it's some sort of full-blown typographical error rather than even just a problem with the conversion from physical to e-book format.In short, the Kindle ebook is a sad waste of bytes and pixels...

I love this book (I have the hardcover and kindle editions), but unfortunately the kindle edition STILL, after over a year, does not display fractions. Why does quality control suck so badly on so many kindle books?Update: prompted by another review, I looked at the book again. It looks like they have corrected the fractions issue!!! Too bad it took so long, but i’m happy now.

This cookbook, like most of Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's cookbooks, is focused on authentic Chinese cuisine and is not a Chinese takeout cookbook. As the book does not cut corners, it includes the presence of some Chinese ingredients which may be difficult to find outside an Asian supermarket. For example, the cookbook includes a number of recipes which would be considered banquet or special occasion foods and include ingredients such as Shark's Fin and Bird's Nest. Nevertheless, this book does include a number of everyday recipes such as Ma Po Tofu and Hunan Hot and Spicy Shrimp, which can be made after a trip to the Asian foods aisle of most supermarkets, and provides useful recipes for Chinese sauces, such as XO sauce, which are usually purchased prepared. This cookbook is definitely geared toward people who are more accustomed to traditional Chinese cooking or are interested in how Chinese food is outside the local takeout place. Mastering the Art of Chinese Cooking includes a number of beautiful pictures of the prepared food and provides a taste of what Chinese home cooking can really be like.

I write this review as one who has been stir frying for many years, but never had a real Chinese cookbook, nor ever learned from anyone how to cook Chinese in an authentic way. I heard about this book on The Splendid Table podcast as a recommendation for the book to get to really learn how to cook authentic Chinese. I ordered it immediately, and holy cow, the lady on the show was right!I have no idea how it compares to other books about learning to cook Chinese, but this is exactly what I've been wanting for years but never bothered to look for.It's not just recipes - it's the philosophy of various kinds of Chinese cooking set in the cultural context from which it came, with lucid, informative, and fun reasonings and descriptions of what individual ingredients do, why they're used, and how they are working with the other ingredients to bring out flavors, textures, and aromas.From the basics of how to make broth and cook rice to highly advanced dishes, she covers a huge range of styles from different geographies, and makes it all sing with her word pictures and personal stories and observations.It's also beautifully made - this is a seriously heavy hardback book with glorious full-color photographs. A work of art by itself.Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn how to cook in a Chinese style, or who just wants to know more about the hows and whys of Chinese food.

Great book! Really delves into some of the nuances that create genuine and successful Chinese dishes. It's also a great read to immerse yourself into some of the cultural history behind Chinese cuisine.

This is a great in-depth scholarly work on Tantra and how it fits in with Hindu beliefs. It was not intended to "teach" Tantra or to be a manual on how to practice it. Rather, it delves deeply into the history, mythology, imagery, and theology underlying this religious system. Anyone who wants to read this book should be aware that there is really no such thing as "tantra yoga" per se. Yoga is a system derived from the Vedas; Tantra is a system based on writings called "tantras". However, like all Hindu systems, they intersect and borrow heavily from one another. While the sexual aspect of Tantra does set it apart from other Hindu systems, many sects treat it metaphorically and not literally (although some do). Sadly, it is this aspect that has captured the Western imagination, resulting (in my opinion) a gross misrepresentation by charlatans wanting to capitalize on the salacious. That's sad.

Georg Feuerstein is a well-known serious scholar of Sanskrit and yoga and I was familiar with his work from other works such as "Textbook of Yoga" (1975), "Encyclopedia of Yoga".(1997), "The Deeper Dimension of Yoga" (2003). I was pleased to find "Tantra: The path of ecstasy" to be immensely readable and well organised. This book engaged me all the way. The book places the development of Tantra into an historical framework, and also the explains the various branches of tantra, some of the differences between them and also their similarities. How the energetic body of nadis, koshas, cakras, kundalini shakti and the use of mantras, mudras and ritual are all part of the tantric conception but also much of which has antecedents in Vedic literature was also helpful. It may be an advantage to already have some familiarity with the philosophical and cultural material. This book is written by a scholar but is short of scholarly - far too readable for that. It is a high quality and informative book for the general reader. If you are interested in the subject, but are new to Sanskrit, to the terminology and the philosophical ideas, you may need to accept that it will take a bit of work, but this book can lead you to a good understanding of the place of Tantra, without the confusion and taint of neo-tantrism. Neo-tantrism is much different and far more shallow than traditional Tantra, and if it is only neo-trantrism that you are looking for, this book may disappoint you. However, perhaps it is worth the challenge to find out the difference.

This book gives a very broad look into spiritual practices, ranging from an overview of Indian archetypes through the ages, to a couple descriptions of occult ceremonies. Reading this prepared me for the depth of my 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training last winter. Understanding the Indian view of time, the ages ("yugas"), samskara (repeating cycles), and more helped me understand where many Indians are coming from. Tantra differs from Hinduism in that it doesn't imply worship of gods or goddesses, but instead recognizes the divine in everything. Tantra moved India out of the case system and elevated the status of women to equals. The writing is dense, but I highlighted every Sanskrit word and it helped me remember a lot more Sanskrit!

Excellent book on the tantric path, providing the reader the framework of tantric/vedic thought in the first few chapters, which is absolutely needed for any new spiritual seeker on the tantric path. The book continues to explain other elements of tantra, but in theory not practice. If you want true practice, learn sanskrit to start, then learn mantras.Body is Asana, Mind is Mantra, Prana is Breathe. =)

1. Not academically rigorous2. Author has lost objectivity3. Questionable sources (cites many new-age western quacks)4. If you have studied Indic religious systems in any academic capacity this will be disappointing unless you're looking for a bathroom read that can double as toilet paper.

There are many Tantra schools or lineages and the subject is complex. Having thousands of years of re-visioning things can get complex. But Fuerstein is able to present in a rather straight forward manner the essence of the esoteric world of Tantra. To many it may be a surprise how much of this is already in the western pop culture. ie chakra, mantra, and mandala work. And for the neo Tantric looking for a sex manual this is not the book.

Excellent review and explication of the Tantra schools of India. Provides a bird's eye view of the terrain, not a deep dive into philosophy or technique, and proves itself worth the read and $

This book is well thought, written and developed. If your interested in the origin of the Tantra philosophical system of India, this is your kind of author. From the cosmogony to the explanation of the forces that reing the physical, mental and universal planes, Feuerstein exposed the most fundamental concepts of Indic thought, all written on a clear and beautiful way. Five stars!
