Forty years ago I stupidly sold my last boat. I have missed it every day since. It was my sixth and best boat, a Chrysler Lonestar. Three of these six boats I built myself, one I shared the work with my father. Building a plywood boat is a bagatelle particularly using the stitch and glue method. The seventh boat is built by this method. In the process I have bought six books from Amazon though all of the information that I needed was free on the internet. The books are “Go Build Your Own Boat” and Build The New Instant Boat by Harold Payson, “Boats with an open Mind” by Philip Bolger, “Boat Building For Beginners” by Jim Michalak, “Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin and “Understanding Boat Design” by Ted Brewer There are separate reviews for each of these books.Ultra Simple Boat Building” by Gavin Atkin is an excellent book for the home builder and I give it five stars. It features 17 very complete plans and instructions for a number of small plywood boats. The diagrams and dimensions are easy to read. Adkin's designs have flotation chambers which are a great safety feature. He explains Epoxy stitch and glue and polyurethane stitch and glue. He also includes a technique called simplified chine log construction. This method places a frame member outside of the hull along the chine. Bolger used this technique in Tortoise and justified it on grounds that it made the boat easier to clean and protected the plywood chine. He believed that it was hydrodynamically satisfactory. For small slow moving displacement hulls he is probably correct. For faster powered planing hulls I have my doubts. It is not completely clear that it really simplifies the construction over say placing the chine log inside the hull in the conventional manner. No matter, the resultant boat will probably be satisfactory. Most of these boats are small and narrow with low sides and are suitable for quiet waters. I know of one individual who takes one off shore here near Los Angeles where it is paddled like a kayak. He has not yet drowned and probably will be okay. Adkin also included plans for a “Puddle Duck Racer”which would be a great choice for someone who enjoys camaraderie and mild competition. I am intrigued by “Dogsbody” which of the offerings in this book is my favorite. One should pay attention to the recommended loadings of Atkin's boats for it could be catastrophic to over load them. Adkin presents a method, not his own apparently, of building a skiff that requires no plans. I found this intriguing because I and a partner once (1953) built a boat using a very similar method. That boat was assembled using glue and light framing with brass screws. I think it cost less than $20 at the time. It saw frequent service with a 5 hp Johnson outboard and lasted at least 10 years when I lost track of it. Adkin offered a piece of simple advice. When going to the store always buy a clamp. You cannot have too many clamps. I think Norm Abrams (This Old House) once made a similar recommendation.

This book is not for the amateur boat builder looking for simple easy to understand step by step instructions. This book is confusingly written and definitely NOT for the beginning boat builder expecting to see simple step by step instructions to follow to build a boat. This is easily one of the most confusing books with unnecessary BS I have EVER read.I read the entire book and couldn’t build not one of these boats if my life depended on it.I couldn’t even do it with the help of the book because it’s that bad you turn to the pages with the actual boat designs and specifications and that’s all you get no step by step no take this and cut to this length then set to the side and take this and cut this length. None of that at all.Just numbers and figures and your supposed to just figure it out.

Not as creative as I hoped it would be.

This book belongs on the shelf of anyone who is contemplating building their own boat. This book was a special treat for me because there is a picture of a boat I built in it. The prospect of building a boat can be very overwhelming. It is a process of figuring out your needs and then deciding on an appropriate design. This is followed by determining if you have the tools, money, space, skill, and time to see a project go from a pile of wood to a pleasant afternoon sailing on a local lake with your family. If you are like me you begin this process by reading as much as you possibly can prior to actually creating sawdust. Gavin Atkin's book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the "how" to build a boat. Although you may supplement this information with additional material from other sources, Atkin gives enough practical information to actually build a boat. Atkin makes building a boat for someone who has never done it seem very doable, even fun. The second part of the book is filled with designs to whet the appetite of anyone whois in the process of trying to decide what would would be the right boat for them. Mr. Atkin includes complete plans for seventeen of his own designs, all very doable, plus he reviews designs done by other popular designers. My boat recently succumbed to dry rot and was hauled to the dump. I am now in the process of deciding which is the "right" boat to build and Gavin Atkin's book, "Ultrasimple Boatbuilding", has renewed my interest in building my own boat again.

This is a good book to get someone started in boat building. It starts out with easy to follow explanations of the tools and techniques needed to build very simple but useful plywood boats, such as the author's "mouse" series. He outlines three different methods of assembly using, timber joints, fiberglass tape and epoxy, and polyurethane glues with open mesh type fiberglass drywall tape. With the latter two methods, the hull panels are temporarily stitched together with adhesive tape, zip ties or wire ties. He gives detailed explanations on each of these three methods. He also provides thirteen of his own designs, which include his popular "mouse" series, two powerboats, and three sailboats. The smaller "mouse" boats are probably tiny enough to tiny enough to store in an apartment, which might make them appealing for those who have no outside property to store their boats. He also shows examples from other ply boat designs, both well known, such as Bolger and Michalak, as well as less well known ones. The only quibble I have is his method drawing the various panels which make up the hull. His method, though workable (it took me some time to figure it out) is not standard in the boat building world. So, anyone who gets used to his method might be lost at sea when trying to draw panels from another designer's work.Other than that, I think it's good enough to earn a permanent place on my bookshelf.

I usually browse many of the "cheapies" or "freebies" I download for my Kindle searching for passages or chapters of interest, to quickly move on to more substantial readings. To my surprise, this book got me glued from beginning to end.Vishwanath is a former business consultant turned into New Age guru, something that would have made me run away from this book a priori. Ignorance is sometimes a bliss. Thus, I was able to read the book without any prejudice, with intellectual curiosity and the detachment that any religious or spiritual book requires from me.This is not an academic exegesis of the Gita, done by a Gita expert or spiritual master (you should check Yogananda's edition for that), but a simple unpretentious book that uses the Gita in a practical way to extract practical advice to improve your life in general, no matter your religion or lack of it. In a way, is also a teacher's book to explain in simple words Hindu spiritual beliefs to non-Hindu people.Vishwanath is able to speak about very complex spiritual things using a very simple language. The book is full of metaphors and simple parables that will get you to understand some of the principles taught by the Gita or some obscure sayings by Krishna. You will learn about the nature of God, the age of the Universe, the Hindu heavens and reincarnation, why Hindu people need of many Gods and Godesses, and the spiritual principles that inspire Yoga among many other things. Some of the practical items of advice will help to bring peace to your mind (if you need of any), give you food for thought, and provide you with some amazing meditation exercises. I especially like the one about the Ocean, which I do sometimes and it is truly amazing.

The Bhagavad Gita is easily the most beautiful and enlightening book I have ever read. Sri Vishwanath's book brings clarity to some of the really big concepts and makes them accessible and practical. A great addition to your spiritual library!

Very good ideas well written and very interested. However this being in the shortened version it is a little hard to understand and needs to direct you to the longer version for clarity.

Its very hard to put into words the Value one receives in this book. Something we should have been exposed to early on in life for sure. The Secrets from this Holy Book the Gita, explains in easy to understand format just how simple it is and how good it can be, if we but just pay attention, be mindful and absorb this profound work of Art. Its true we have an inner guidance system and the red lights begin flashing upon opening this book, but with Chapter 3 things go way beyond the limitations we have set up for ourselves over the course of our lives and we can truly see the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank You Master Vishwanath once again for taking me a bit further and showing me what life looks like from a Master's point of view. I'm feeling it now and have this Knowing that all is good and getting better each Holy Moment.

Sri Vishwanath teaches us about who we are in reality. This in itself is a revelation because most Christians have no idea who they are. If you realize the Self, you're God Realized. (Check out Ramana Maharshi's work.) Since we're in Kali Yuga (the age of wickedness, cheaters, and morons) I hope there are a few people left who continue to work on themselves. Thank you, Sri Vishwanath!

I just finished reading this book last week. I really wish I had read this book before starting to read God Talks with Arjuna. The Secret of Bhagavad Gita really helps explain what is going on with the story in a very straightforward manner. I highly recommend reading this book before attempting to read the actual Gita.

Great interpretation of a classic

Very insightful and inspirational. A book you'd need to read slowly, to allow all the deep concepts sink in. A book you can read again and again, when you need to see how values in this world are not quite what the society pounds into our heads, leaving common sense and reason behind.

Sex and the Citadel: Intimate Life in a Changing Arab World, by Shereen El-Feki

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Journalist El Feki, with familial roots deep in Egypt, delves into a sensitive, rarely addressed topic in this tour de force on Arab life. She begins with a brisk history of sex in the Arab world that will likely be eye-opening for Western readers. By showing the roots of sensuous and sexual literature that date back to the tenth century, and noting scholarly opinions that a rebuke to colonialism provoked a shift toward conservatism, she prompts readers to question the sexually conservative roots of their own governments and politics, regardless of geography. From women meeting behind closed doors to discuss spousal disappointment and abuse to doctors all too familiar with surprising sexual practices, El Feki peels back every layer. Her research is wide-ranging and relentless. She did not accept official statistics on such topics as prostitution, STDs, or abortion, instead seeking out the opinions and experiences of countless individuals in clinics, suburban neighborhoods, beauty parlors, and the media in multiple countries and socio-economic levels to get a truth that is complicated but undeniable. Mandatory reading for anyone seeking to truly know the Middle East, Sex and the Citadel should knock the doors off assumptions held dear by so many Westerners. --Colleen Mondor

Review

**Kirkus Best Books of the Year (2013)**“El Feki has spent four years investigating an intriguing and potentially explosive subject: changing sexual attitudes and behavior in the Arab world. . . . A thoughtful study not to be treated as titillation.” —Library Journal  “A clear wakeup call.” —Publishers Weekly  “El Feki, with familial roots deep in Egypt, delves into a sensitive, rarely addressed topic in this tour de force on Arab life. . . . Mandatory reading for anyone seeking to truly know the Middle East, Sex and the Citadel should knock the doors off assumptions held dear by so many Westerners.” —Booklist, starred review“Shereen El Feki has done something important, brave, and necessary. By investigating what sexual experiences and values are in the Arab world, rather than projecting views on them ideologically, she insists on our taking seriously and urgently major social issues—from cliterodectomy to adultery in a traditional context to passion itself—that are shrouded in myth, taboo, and disinformation. She has done a major service to those who care about feminism in this region, about human rights, about sexuality, and about the human condition.” —Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth “Sex and the Citadel captures the vibrancy of contemporary issues being faced by those living in Muslim societies today. El Feki brings to life the hopes, fears, and challenges of a wide range of individuals as they deal with sex, love, and relationships. There is much here to learn for both Muslims and non-Muslims. This book explores how views on contemporary life vary across different Muslim communities.” —Tewodros Melesse, director-general, International Planned Parenthood Federation “A daring new study. El Feki embarks on her subject with healthy doses of humor and irony. She looks at the tensions between what is halal (permitted under Islamic law) and haram (forbidden) or zina (downright debauchery). She also discusses sex education, abortion, pornography, homosexuality, and even lingerie and cross-dressing. A surprisingly open, extremely timely examination of the sexual coming-of-age for Egyptian youth.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review“An engrossing book with a powerful interrogation of intimate relationships and politics in Egypt. Sex and the Citadel brilliantly explores the complex conjunction between contemporary history and personal lives.” —Pinar Ilkkaracan, co-founder, Women for Women's Human Rights (WWHR), and the International Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies  (CSBR)“Ambitiously broad in its scope…A timely, thought provoking, and highly readable study.” –New York Journal of Books  “Cheekily titled, eminently readable…While her subject is titillating, her treatment of it is not: A former vice chair of the U.N.'s Global Commission on HIV and Law, she is frank, nonjudgmental and unsentimental, eschewing the kind of stagey shockability that might have tempted a lesser writer when dealing with topics as unsavory as female genital mutilation or domestic violence…intriguing.” –San Francisco Chronicle  “Conversational yet informed, witty without succumbing to frivolity, and buttressed every so often by statistical findings, Sex and the Citadel emerges from a five-year, somewhat desultory investigation of sexual mores in a region undergoing political transformation...She brings to her subject an indignant sensibility recalling in some ways that of the social revolutionaries.” –Boston Globe   “Once inside the book, you’ll still find plenty of humor, but it’s harnessed to an impressively researched work of sociology. El Feki, a scientist, journalist, and academic, has traveled far and delved deep through the Arab world for half a decade trying to get a handle on the customs, laws, attitudes, hang-ups, and religious dicta that shape the sex lives of the region in general, and Egypt and Cairo in particular. Through this understanding, she intends to shine a broad light on what makes the region tick, politically and socially…It’s a serious topic, and El Feki has done a gargantuan and gutsy job of research. She treats her subject with respect but also with a lively irreverence, which is the appropriate tone for a book about sexual customs and foibles. Toward the end, as she becomes increasingly intent on shoring up her thesis, the book grows more serious and loses a bit of the light touch that makes the bulk of it so readable. But she’s fearless, calling a spade a spade and wading into neighborhoods, both physical and topical, where angels might well fear to tread.” –Santa Fe New Mexican   “Will the Arab spring precipitate a sexual as well as a political revolution? It is an intriguing question, which the award-winning Cairo-based journalist Shereen El Feki explores in this account of a highly sensitive and still mainly hidden facet of the Arab world...Dr. El Feki's position as a western-educated female Muslim, both insider and outsider (she grew up in Canada, the daughter of an Egyptian father and Welsh mother), gives the book an invaluable perspective.” –Guardian   “A fascinating survey of sex that is rich in detail…Understanding the attitudes and practices of Egyptians when it comes to sex is intriguing in itself. But Ms. El Feki also uses sex as a means to understand better a country and society that has been rocked by revolution.” –The Economist “Fascinating.” –The Globe and Mail      “Sex and the Citadel is a bold, meticulously researched mini Kinsey Report, rich in anecdote and statistics.” –The Spectator   “The frisky title of Shereen El Feki’s book, with its allusion to Candace Bushnell and Sarah Jessica Parker, is a measure of what you get. El Feki is an immunologist turned Economist journalist specialising in health issues. She is also an English-language presenter for Al Jazeera, and a member of the United Nations Global Commission on HIV and the Law...As one would expect from this background, she has broad sympathies. She also has a bold, punchy way of expressing herself.” –Telegraph “This survey of sexual habits across the Arab world is as serious-minded as it is entertaining.”—The Independent “A cogent account of sexual liberty in the Arab world.”—The Sunday Telegraph “But in talking to ordinary people as well as sex therapists and sociologists, El Feki has been able to produce an original portrait of the region’s youth.” –Financial Times  “Sex and the Citadel is a fascinating exploration of sexual culture, based on a well-balanced mixture of history, statistical information gleaned from the few surveys conducted by various NGOs, and first-hand interviews, which in many cases show that the official studies have barely scratched the surface.”—Daily Star Lebanon “This is a principled book, robustly educative and illuminating without consenting to the kind of vacant voyeurism that the intimate life veiled by Islam can provoke in unthinking outsiders.”—Times Higher Education Supplement, Book of the Week “Combining thorough reportage and sure-handed critical views, El Feki excels at sketching primary themes in images that stick…a supremely eye-opening book.”—The Chronicle of Higher Education

We read this for our February 2014 Feminist Bookgroup book choice, nominating it after several of us heard the author on NPR's Fresh Air (interview is archived and can be heard online.)As usual with our book choices, there were a variety of reactions, which is part of the richness of being in a book group. My own reaction? I liked the mix of facts, anecdotes from individuals, and analysis. I'm amazed at what she was able to uncover in these closed societies, and her looks back at a dramatically different past. The book was far more than I expected. I was particularly surprised and interested in the political aspects - the reverberations of colonialism and backlash against the perception of the "West" and "western" ideas. Lots to think about in this book, especially if one cares about the rights of women and those who are LGBT.

If someone wrote about sex in the Western world, I would want it to be Shereen El Feki. El Feki's familiarity with both Egypt and the West has made her the perfect guide to the strangely familiar world of the Middle East bedroom. Rather than take a critical view of the region or treat the region with kid gloves by denying any problems that arise from cultural attitudes, she frankly seeks out Arabs who are dealing with the sexual life of the region and frankly lays out the situation. Though there are a lot of sexual hangups in the Arab world, it is far from neutered. There are a plethora of groups trying to transform Egypt and the Arab region politically, socially, and sexually. What is most remarkable about El Feki's take on Arabl sexuality is that it is viewed as a part of a larger society, which just like the West, is always in flux.I would recommend this book for the curious and for anyone who enjoys reading about sexuality.

Shereen El Feki handles this topic with sensitivity, poise, and wonder. I was expecting the cliche trope - a world exoticized, an entire people pigeon-holed, a discussion of sex based purely on the stereotypes - but she does absolutely none of this.First introducing the topic's touchy context to us in a way we can easily appreciate, she then discusses the problematic facets of intimate life in the Arab world - at once framing her findings and arguments in terms of colonialism, inferiority complexes, societal pressures, poverty, virginity, homosexuality, and marriage.I appreciate El Feki not only for bringing this book to us in a critical time, but for providing a clear, necessary voice to navigate the tangled terrain of the Arab world. I bought this book before heading to Beirut for the summer and read it while sitting on my balcony in rural Lebanon. As a Lebanese-American living in the midst of "a changing Arab world," I found El Feki's work to be spot on - both accurate and precise - sound, well-researched, and presented with delicacy and respect. The author is a brave and brilliant woman, and I am so happy to have found this book. El Feki - from Beirut with love - THANK you for writing this! Please write more; you have a new lifetime fan!

Just as the Mormon novel, Shereen el Feki's book has introduced me to a culture through emotional, intimate stories focusing on the most personal of relations. I had not really thought much about women in the Middle East before and am pleased to have downloaded the book. And unlike the 19th wife, the ending is more satisfying. The writing is witty, and I am sure once you've read it, you will join the ranks of those who want to have met the grandmother, whose frank remarks make you both laugh and cringe.

Excellent on so many levels. As a foreign born daughter of Egyptians, this book filled the blanks on so many questions I had about myself and my childhood. It is a book that explains Egypt at its core. A must read for anyone that wants to get to know and understand the complexities of Egypt.

I write thrillers and have a protagonist in Morocco and a Bedouin woman in Spain; I'd like the Bedouin to be a voice of Muslim feminism. Sex and the Citadel is the third book I've read, and the most recently published, building support for the voice I seek; it's the most approachable, and great fun to read. Sex and the Citadel is also a powerful resource for the young and curious woman in the Middle East.Shareen El Feki, a half Welsh, half Egyptian woman, does a marvelous job of reaching analytically into the sexual mores of the Arab Muslim world. She spent two years, asking and listening, with Arab women from Egypt and across the Middle East . On this mental journey, through the lens of a thoroughly modern Muslim woman, El Feki leads the reader on a fascinating examination of the attitudes of Muslim women about sexuality, and more.El Feki can really write. Time spent as a journalist for the Economist seems to have been well spent; the story flows cleanly and maintains the reader's interest. She's smart; an early doctorate in molecular immunology from Cambridge attests to that. The modern phenomenon of Internet Cloud-connected `everything' allows fascinating discussions of the impact of new knowledge flowing into the Muslim home, beyond the censoring control of the governments. The reader is exposed to several modern web-oriented paths used to educate the budding Muslim feminist. One is Muntada Jensaneya, the Arab Forum for Sexuality, Education and Health. There are others discussed. Some parts of the book catch one by surprise by evoking a sudden guffaw. El Feki's story of Muslim women searching the internet for information on 'sexual aids' is special, as efforts to translate descriptive material labor. There is little pushing of the Western model of acceptable treatment of women, but rather a considered discussion of why the situation with regard to sexuality is different in the Arab world and how the women there deal with it. Wisdom and humor are delivered through examples, vignettes and pithy quotes from her paternal grandmother. All in all, the voice of the modern Muslim feminist has been given a new, strong voice. Well done.Robert Cook, author of Patriot and Assassin[...]

Don't let my 3 star rating deter you. Brett Markham did a good job writing this bok and I'm not unhappy to have bought it. I think that, for the length and amount of information contained, the bok is overpriced. There's good info here and urea worth knowing, for sure. Some things are a bit incomplete. For example, Markham includes a number of jerky marinade recipes but doesn't hint at how much meat the recipes can marinate. It's probably obvious to him, but I really don't know, so I'll need to do my own research. I can do that of course, but then I guess I don't need his expertise.Quite a lot of the book is taken up with instructions for building a homemade dehydrator. I'm probably not going to do that, and if I did want to, there are lots of free plans online to choose from. That said, he's got lots of interesting suggestions for making instant-mix foods. I'll probably try some of them out.

I was not as impressed as I wanted to be by this book. I mean with the title of food dehydrating bible I thought it would be a more comprehensive collection. It is an easy read, and gives basic knowledge if you are just starting out and unfamiliar with the dehydration process.

Very Weill written. Lot of good information that I can put to good use. The directions for build your own are excellent. Thank!

Specialty Cookbook - May prove to be a little too difficult to do in the field

I wish this book contained more recipes and more photographs. It discussed ways to dehydrate food and how to make dehydrators.

Great gift

Lots of great information. Will use my dehydrator more!

Very good basic information. Excellent book to get started with. However, the book has no depth; so, the tittle is misleading.

Flowers for Algernon, by Daniel Keyes

From the Back Cover

When we first meet Charlie he is about to embark on a compelling but dangerous journey from retardation to genius. He has only a vague understanding of what will happen, but he is aware that knowledge and the ability to write are of paramount importance. So he doesn't hesitate for a moment to cooperate in a radical experiment designed to increase his intelligence, the key - he hopes - to being valued as a human being and to being loved. Daniel Keyes's powerful and highly original story of a young man whose quest for intelligence and knowledge parallels that of Algernon (the mouse who is an earlier subject of a similar experiment) remains unique in imaginative literature. We follow Charlie Gordon's mental, emotional, and spiritual growth. We watch with excitement as he becomes the focus of attention by the scientific world, his intellectual capacities far surpassing those of the psychologists and neurosurgeons who engineered his metamorphosis. We also follow the progress of his romance with two women, one who knew him before the experiment as well as with another, who knows him only as the attractive, bright, and sympathetic man he has become. And, finally, we hope against hope that what happens suddenly, unexpectedly, to Algernon will not happen to Charlie.

#21,150 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was recommended this book by my mother who read it as a child. Even though I knew how it would end the book filled me with hope on every new page, until it didn't. I caught myself hoping that my mother hadn't remembered the ending correctly, and everything would be fine. Flowers for Algernon tackles many complex issues from the mistreatment and misunderstanding of the mentally handicapped, the burden of knowledge that every person with common sense thinks they experience but doesn't truly understand, to the meaning of existence and the human condition. You don't read Flowers for Algernon to feel happy at the end. You read it to cry, take a shuddering breath, and then step out into the sunshine with a greater appreciation for life and the struggles of your fellow human beings.

I read Flowers for Algernon last week for Banned Books week. I had heard about it over the years, but I was never required to read it. Since I read very little science fiction, I never thought I’d enjoy reading it. Enjoyment isn’t exactly what I got from this book–enlightenment might be more appropriate. In case you don’t know what the book is about, here is a brief synopsis. Charlie was a mentally challenged young man who wanted nothing more than to be smarter than he was. He volunteered for an experimental surgery that was supposed to increase his intelligence. The surgery had previously only been done on mice, and Algernon the mouse was the result of an earlier operation. When Charlie saw how Algernon navigated a maze with ease, he was convinced that the operation would be successful.Charlie’s surgery was also a success, but his ever increasing intelligence caused difficulties in his relationships. His “friends” at work found out very quickly that he was no longer a target for their teasing, to which he had always been oblivious. They were so uncomfortable that they complained to the owner of the bakery he had been working at for years. He was let go.He tried having relationships with women, but his emotional intelligence had not progressed on the scale of his intellect. The teacher who had taught him for years ultimately ended their budding relationship, because he was so far ahead of her intellectually, she could no longer keep up.He reached a point at which he understood that his improvement was only temporary. He watched Algernon regress until all his progress was gone. Then Charlie himself began that backward slide.I was heartbroken to see his realization that the people he thought were his “friends” were being cruel to him all along. Increased awareness and understanding brought him nothing but pain. I was almost thankful at the end when he reached a point of being somewhat stable, even though he may not have been even as intelligent as he was when he started.I asked myself if he would have truly consented to the surgery if he had known what would happen to him afterwards. Did he actually have capacity to consent?I don’t know if I was supposed to wish that increasing intelligence was a possibility for people with mental challenges, but I finished the book with a feeling of discomfort that his life was seen on the same level as that of a mouse in the eyes of the people performing the experiment. It was ultimately a book that raised a lot of questions in my head and heart. There aren’t many answers to be found–just more questions.

This is probably the most difficult review I've written. Its hard to know what to say. If I'd read more reviews I might not have read this, but it endes up being one of the only books I've ever read in one sitting... And like the greatest books... One I'll never forget. As someone who's struggled with mental illness, confusing limitations, and my place in the world, as well as someone who later got me/cfs and lost even more independence, I relate so much to this book... Even though the main character is developmentally disabled, there's so much insight in this book.I'll tell you, the end will seem sad at first, but has with it its own wisdom and inspiration. Reminding us like all things in this world, bittersweet is still sweet.I hate sad endings to an extreme, but i don't regret reading this book.Ironically, in Charlie's lostness, he found the wisdom he searched for all along & the journey is well worth the read!

This story (short and long forms) won a Hugo and a Nebula award about 50 years ago. I read it as a child, never forgot it, and on reread the story still resonates. The book is written in simple sentences suitable to both children and adults. A retarded man is given an operation to increase his intelligence. Algernon, a mouse, is given the same operation. What makes the tale particularly poignant is the quotation at the beginning in which it is noted that one can be blinded either by going from darkness to light or from light to darkness--and others should not laugh at the traveller regardless of direction. On one level the tale is simple. On another, it addresses emotional v intellectual growth, the complexity of families, the issue of how those who appear different are treated, and the question of what is ultimately important. This is a classic, "must read" book for everyone. One caveat is that it should not be enjoyed as an audio book alone, because much of the protagonist's development is given by the spelling and phrasing of his journal entries. Audio book plus print (as I read it this time) is wonderful. A wonderful book that everyone should know

I have never loved a character more than I loved Charly Gordon. Within pages, I was attached to his character and rooted for him until the very end, even as the conclusion became obvious and unavoidable. Warning: probably will unexpectedly make you cry (or at least make you incredibly sad several times) so plan out a good (private) time to read it. This is a book that will really impact the way you treat others and will probably change a lot of the things you say/do. It gives a little bit of relief to those trying to find a way to be happy in a judgemental world and is incredibly beautiful.

This a book which I read as a child and opened my eyes to different viewpoints on life. It was good enough that I had to buy it as an adult to read to my wife. The story is straightforward and easy to comprehend at any level. Don't think that makes it boring though; the character development is really the driving force behind the plot.
