Amazing, a thorough presentation of Cenozoic mammalian evolution in South America. I wish I could write more about it, but there is nothing to fault, and it is a fantastic reference all around. Even as an experienced amateur Paleontologist, there were creatures written and pictured in this book that I had no idea had existed.

I am not a paleontologist, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the product. What I can give you is the impression of somebody who has just dabbled in the study of fossil mammals. If you have never read any technical literature about fossil mammals, you might slog down in a few places. However, the text should be fairly clear to people with some relevant background. Many older summaries of South American fossil mammals emphasized phylogeny -- who's related to who -- with scant details on ecology and behavior. This book provides a much more balanced approach. It is not a comprehensive compendium of every species of fossil South American mammal: that would be enormous. However, it does emphasize specific sites, which is probably more comprehensible to most readers than just lumping specimens of diverse provenance into "Land Mammal Ages". I am more interested in what lived in a particular place at a particular time, than in creating the generalizations that some specialists pursue. Many of the extinct taxa have no close modern relatives, so most people might have only vague ideas about basic facts pertaining to many species. Presenting estimated weights of species is very helpful. some of The illustrations were off-putting at first glance: the artist seems not to display many anatomical details. In retrospect, however, many such details that are probably unknown and highly conjectural. The result evokes a sense of mystery --- what was this creature really like?

The author is able to bring the past to life, obviously using great understanding and knowledge, while admitting what is debatable or unlikely. Each species is discussed, size, tooth type, how it probably fitted in the ecosystem, who it was related to, who named and discovered the first specimen. This easily could have been a boring or dry book, but even though I am not any type of scientist, ecologist, or even a naturalist I found the book entertaining and was sad when it ended.

After decades of relative neglect, it is good to see South America's fossil mammals getting some attention (this volume and "Megafauna"). The peculiarities of the fauna made it a great test-kitchen for how evolution fills the niches of the environment. Perhaps South America is even more instructive than Australia, since in South America the different "newcomer" groups filtered into the continent at varying times and the existing fauna either adapted or lost the battle to survive. There was a great deal of new information presented in a not too technical fashion. I'd place this in my top ten for books on mammalian paleontology aimed at adult, but not specialist, readers.

Well worth the money especially given the lack of books on South American extinct mammals. Well illustrated and easy enough for someone with an interest in fossil animals but no biology degree to keep up with.

An outstanding introduction to the unique fauna of cretaceous South America.

First time looking at this subject. Enjoyed learning about this time. Not an easy read for a novice. Pictures look better on an iPad rather than a Kindle.

I loved this book! It is full of the latest research, written well and there are plenty of illustrations.

I actually ended up reading this book after getting my master's degree in aerospace engineering, and even after a few years of work in industry. This was because my first crack at doing real aircraft structural design work put me completely in over my head, and this book was the first step of getting a handle on everything. In retrospect I'm completely aghast that in six years and two degrees of engineering schooling, nothing like this was taught at my particular school (which shall go un-named for it's own sake), yet it is required for the freshman year at U of Iowa.Engineers are tasked with developing systems that produce value in a nutshell. The way you configure and define that system, iteratively dealing with the bigger parts first and sequentially working your way down to defining the smallest details last, is engineering design. This book explains the whole philosophy behind design, and how to do it. It's essentially a decision-making process, that can actually carry over into practically anything you do in life so even non-technical people could probably benefit from this book. Politicians, policy wonks / analysts, and people who debate politics in particular could have much more meaningful and productive discussions if they actually employed a design framework. (Maybe they do, but I haven't seen much evidence of it . . .)This book lays out a ten step process of design that is iterative. Meaning you can always (and actually will have to do so many, many times) go back and repeat steps. Although these ten steps are not written in stone, and I would highly recommend any engineer / designer to develop their own steps, they are an excellent guide to improving the quality and reducing the difficulty of design work.It ends up schools (at least mine) only really teach analysis, which was just one of the ten steps. This is one of the most laborious, most important, and, critically, easily taught so that's probably why schools concentrate on it. But they'll do their students a huge dis-service if they don't even tell the students about the other steps! Once you read the steps they sound pretty obvious / intuitive, but this doesn't mean people will know about them and apply them unless they're introduced to them first.I would also recommend that any engineer get a good book on systems engineering if they want to understand design in a more comprehensive sense. Blanchard in particular has some good books. My school taught systems engineering as an elective that you were practically dissuaded from taking, and only offered to grad students. Instead it should be a required course that's offered before students take their capstone senior year design courses.

Purchased this out of print Engineering book for my son because his professor recommended it. I didn’t think I’d be able to find the book, but here it was on Amazon! And it I purchased the last one available. Very nice condition!

As other reviewers have stated, this book is worth it. It's thin, not too large, but provides a clear logical approach to Engineering Design that is timeless in its simplicity and logic. Now that you have to get it used, it's worth the few dollars.

I was looking for a book about this subject to read but this one does not have the "look inside" feature. This book looks a bit overpriced at $145 for having only 240 pages.

It is a must read for a freshment engineering student. If you can get a copy, it will be a good reference for your entire engineering study.

This collection would be called pornographic if it weren't for the tasteful lighting and artful presentation of the ladies who present themselves completely. There are uses of glass and metallic dildos, placed in various orifices (wink wink), and yet somehow the photography keeps a taste of artful flair. The black and white saturation makes every detail stand out while muting things that would normally be a distraction -- what you see here is women at the height of their erotic powers, baring their bodies for you to enjoy.The models are all of caucasian descent, which is somewhat of a disappointment when searching for good erotic photography collections. A variety of races presents an opportunity to see sensualism in different facets, but this collection is nonetheless worthwhile. The poses and angles of photography are more raw than they were in the more refined, more tightly restrained 'Sexy Games,' but the result is a sexy collection of nude women in states of sexually aroused debauchery. It's the lack of the restraint that really brings out the best in this book, providing not only good ideas for couples to try out sexy poses, but also showing that unrestrained sexual pride is a power.The price dropped very much recently (almost 30%) on Amazon, and we would recommend getting this book right away. It's not so much something to have out on the coffee table like a collection by Helmut Newton, but it should be some naughty fun (bedroom pre-gaming, if you will?). It is a bit on a smaller side for these kinds of books, but it does make it more discrete if you wish!

The first several pages are fascinating. After that they are a bit repetitive. Using the same models and dildos over and over again is a bit tiresome, as is using the same poses. I still think this is a collectable selection, owing to its unique foci. I do think, however, the book (perhaps a second edition) would be more interesting if a wider selection of different models of varying ages were used. And if dildos must be used, how about varying their shape, texture, and color.It also occurs to me that this book would be excellent supplementary material for a GYN course or perhaps an anatomy of female genitalia course. It certainly served as one for me.

While this book is very sexually explicit, it lacks creativity. A lot of the same kind of poses. No variation in background. It kind of just came off as the photographer wanted to see women with there legs spread. But there are some good photos mixed in, I just found it repetitive.

Basically, as the review below says, this book feature beautiful models being very rude with a variety of dildos and vibrators.Some of the shots are lovely, some pornographic. It's not a book to leave out on the coffee table, but one for a private collection. (If it is on your coffee table please invite me round.)

As I mentioned in my review of Didier Carre's Sexy Games, the content of that book and this one are very similar (which is a good thing). Also as I said in the other review, I'd prefer a more colorful style instead of monochrome, but the photos are well done, and the models are all very attractive. As with Sexy Games, most of the photos are pretty explicit, but still done tastefully (in my opinion).

Should have read more reviews and looked through the negatives before ordering. All pictures taken in studio with a lot of emphasis put on the models and their nether regions. Often using devices, etc. I am a fan of nude artwork. However, this was very crass and came across as more glorified porn than even erotic art. Nude art should convey a feeling, an emotion or thought. This is not that. Marc Lagrange, Frank De Mulder and Russell James have all put out books that I really enjoyed. I was recommended this and was very disappointed. I don't want a "pretty girl" book. I want one that makes me think and ponder. One I feel comfortable sharing with others and one my fiancé can enjoy with me. Not this. Was fairly off putting.Unless you want a literal porn book, stay away as this is NOT art.

Love this simple book. Great for practicing drawing.

I’m disappointed. The figures are quite awkward. I will probably return it.

Very informative book.

I purchased this book as a newcomer to drawing with a desire to draw people beyond my ‘stick figure’ capabilities. The book is a great step-by-step guide on how to draw the human form for beginners. Each step was clearly explained and achievable for someone relatively new to drawing. It starts off with drawing stick people to learn proportions and each chapter gets progressively more advanced until you’re drawing fully formed bodies with muscles. I liked the way each chapter builds on the previous chapter and that there are plenty of illustrations to show you what to do. It’s not about drawing a portrait for me, so it suits the goal I have in mind quite well.

I bought Jeff Mellem’s previous book for my father and he really loved it, so I’m excited to give him this book. I’m not an artist myself but I can see that it’s a great starting point for learning to draw people. It starts off really simply so it’s not intimidating to start the lessons. By the end you’ll be drawing people with all the muscles.The part I like the most was pages 56-57 on how to draw eyes. That really showed me that if you don't get the eyes right you can miss the whole message of the piece you're working on.There are lots of books that cover drawing the figure, but a lot of them are more reference guides than a how-to guide. I think this book gets a lot of things right and would be really useful to artists of any level.

Not bad. It provides some useful infornation. I purchased the book because I was using the on line PDF and that was getting weirsome.

I found "How to Draw People" a sound reference tool when I am struggling with my figure work. The step by step tutorials and final examples were very beneficial! I would highly recommend this book to any beginning or professional artists!

The following points stand out to me most clearly:1) Sola Scriptura has been used to privilege the literate, and most of the theology considered and pondered by Westerners has been written by people in places of power. This is a problem (to put it lightly) as it has greatly shaped our theology, and therefore has greatly shaped our view of Jesus."The fact remains: Those most likely to be literate and viewed as theologically sound in the last five centuries have been white, male, educated and Western. This means that the translation and interpretation of Scripture has largely been handled by the category with the most power in the world over the last 500 years" (38, 39). Furthermore, "When we neglect the perspectives of the downtrodden, the likelihood of Scripture distortion rises exponentially" (137).2) That Jesus is still alive and teaching us through his spirit today: “Jesus is still our Rabbi.”3) If it is indeed true that Jesus is still our rabbi, that begs the question, “Which Jesus?” This inquiry propels the subsequent discussion in the book about how our understanding of the Bible shapes our understanding of both Jesus and the cross. Can Jesus, who focused his ministry on the marginalized and oppressed in society, be properly understood when viewed only through the lens of the powerful/privileged?"The Bible is one of the few ancient texts in this world written by people who were not in power" (166)."Perhaps the controlling inclinations of sola Scriptura are so ingrained in the Western Protestant imagination that it's taken this monumental move of the Spirit to dislodge our idolization of the Bible" (109). 4) An exploration of Rene Girard’s theory on mimetic desire and scapegoating. First the book looks at how the Bible humanizes the scapegoat. Then, the authors consider how the Bible, a text written by a people group consistently scapegoated, unmasks violence and its effects not only on the individual, but society as well. In that unmasking, the cross and Jesus give us a clear picture of how to break the cycle of violence my mimicking Jesus."...when people mimic the emotions and desires of those around them -- people act in ways contrary to how they view themselves. Instead of crowd imitation, what God offers is mimetic contagion oriented toward Jesus as we allow our minds and our desires to be transformed by the Holy Spirit" (203).This book will give you a lot to think about; it is definitely worth the read.

Solus Jesus: A Theology of Resistance is a book I have been looking forward to since I first heard that Ken Wilson and Emily Swan, the co-pastors of Blue Ocean Faith Ann Arbor, were working on it. I have already done some writing on how the concept of Solus Jesus has been of significant benefit to my theology and life as a whole, so it should not be surprising to hear that I was thrilled to hear that Swan and Wilson were working on a full book on the subject. There is a LOT going on in this book. It certainly did not disappoint, but it did surprise me—in a remarkably encouraging way.When I sat down to read Solus Jesus: A Theology of Resistance, I was expecting an extended explanation and defense of what Blue Ocean Faith people mean when talk about the concept. As someone who has been hanging around the fringes of the Blue Ocean Faith community (and cheering it on) for a while now, I was already familiar with the idea in broad terms. Essentially Solus Jesus is a riff on, and reaction to, the reformation credo "Sola Scriptura". Inspired by Phyllis Tickle's suggestion that the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, will begin to work in a fresh paradigm every five hundred years or so, Solus Jesus recommends a decentering of the Bible as a source of certainty and instead placing our confidence in the person of Jesus Christ. Ken Wilson and Emily Swan are both post-Evangelicals who were put through the ringer by the Evangelical "machine" over the issue of full LGBTQ+ inclusion (Ken Wilson tells the story of this in his previous book A Letter to My Congregation). It was probably for that reason, as well as the general timeliness of the subject, that I expected this book to be that defense and explanation.It turns out that the vision Swan and Wilson had for their book was much bigger than mine. While there is some defense of the concept (I found Chapter 4: In Defense of Experience—Wilson and Chapter 5: The age of the Spirit—Swan particularly helpful here) the greater portion of the book is devoted to a theological and practical working out of what Solus Jesus can look like in the contemporary world. In essence, the Authors delivered to my expectation in Part 1 (Solus Jesus) of the book, and then went well beyond, bringing the titular concept into conversation with Girardian scapegoat theory to recommend a more developed and ambitious theology in Part 2 (A Theology of Resistance), and then working though some of what an application of this theology might look like if implemented by the contemporary Church in Part 3 (A New Way Forward). While all three cohere nicely and the chapters all build effectively on one another, each part really could have been its own work. In fact, the only critique I can think of for this book is that I would have really enjoyed a bit more of each section, so maybe a trilogy would have worked well.Both Swan and Wilson have engaging and complementary writing styles and they are both up-front with their backgrounds and perspectives. As a result, Solus Jesus is both accessible on a popular level and "challenging and thought provoking" as a book of theology. The co-authorship takes the form of independently written chapters with Wilson and Swan each writing from their respective strengths.In terms of the actual ideas presented, Solus Jesus represents a serious candidate for a Girardian post-evangelical (and possibly renewed mainline Protestant) theology. Taking the title to represent the two major themes of the book in conversation: First Solus Jesus as a re-centering of Jesus and de-centering of the Bible-as-source-of-certainty in the life of the Christain, then A Theology of Resistance built on the foundation of Solus Jesus and complimented by Girardian mimetic and scapegoat theory. In both cases, Swan and Wilson come across far more as offering, than as arguing, their ideas.The Solus Jesus thesis is grounded, not in a rejection of the Bible as such, but in a rejection of the Bible as a source of certainty, first, because certainty isn't turning out to be a realistic demand, and second because the Bible itself points more to Jesus of Nazareth than to its self as a source for confidence. While the book does lay out a case for this, it strikes me that Wilson and Swan are writing this book at a time when the evangelical (and post-evangelical) case against rigid understandings of Biblical authority and infallibility have already been made (Pete Enns' The Sin of Certianty is both referenced and relevant here). Swan and Wilson are, I suspect, largely done with attempting to justify their Christianity to the Evangelical machine and have moved on to offer their insights to those who are already searching for something more.So, too, with their Theology of Resistance. Swan and Wilson waste almost no time attacking or critiquing existing Evangelical theologies of ethics, politics, and atonement beyond sharing a few of their own helpful stories of times and ways in which those theologies came up short for them in the past. Instead, the authors work to interpret much of the (particularly Western) Church's crisis of being and failure through the lens of Girardian mimetic and scapegoat mechanics. While I don't find Girard to provide any sort of perfect, comprehensive model for human behavior or a theology of the atonement (nor do Swan and Wilson claim that he does), I was impressed with how well the model fit both the atonement and as an explanation for the repeated failure of the Church to take the side of justice as it has interacted with an unjust society throughout history. In line with the aphorism "all models are wrong, but some are useful", Solus Jesus: A Theology of Resistance demonstrates clearly that Girard's is a useful model in understanding God's actions in the world and through the church.Ultimately I found Solus Jeusus: A Theology of Resistance both satisfying and challenging in all of the best ways, and I sincerely hope that it will have a place in determining the direction that post-evangelicalism will take at this juncture in history—it certainly deserves to.

Could it be that Jesus, not scripture, is the final authority in all matters of faith and morals? Swan and Wilson boldly say YES, and the result is brilliant. They weave compelling storytelling (SERIOUSLY GREAT STORIES!) with sophisticated analysis into one of the most encouraging Christian books I've read in a long time.Many within the Protestant traditions have articulated how sola scriptura is insufficient. Swan and Wilson add their own voices to that project but take a giant step forward by offering a bold and satisfying alternative: solus Jesus. Swan and Wilson embody an authentic witness. The power of their experience, and the wisdom of their prophetic insight will serve all who are ready to receive it. The icing on the cake is how clearly and well-written this book is.Bonus: this would make a great book for a book club or small group! Enjoy!

This book is awesome! It's so amazing to see what people do with the little space that they have in this city (and with tiny dog costumes, tiny names, and lots of other wonderfully teeny things). This book is a treasure trove of TINY anecdotes about New York. Next time you walk past the New York Public Library, you can stop someone on the street and say, "Hey did you know that the tiniest book in there is only 1 inch by 3/4 of an inch?" This is the kind of knowledge I like to accumulate. If you do too, go for it.

I thought this was "just" a really terrific concept really well executed. A tiny book perfectly suited for when you have tiny bits of time on your hands. And then I landed on chapter 38 and I’m probably going to go down the rabbit hole for days.Read the book largest to smallest, smallest to largest or bounce around like I did. You’ll probably find 44 things you didn’t know and at least a couple that thrill and fascinate you. Pick up a copy for yourself and one for that friend who thinks they know everything about the city. A fun read.

It has been quite some time since I read the first book in this series but I immediately fell into the story again. I love the juxtaposition of a modern day historian's discovery of the papers of Regency heroes and heroines with the story of the heroes and heroines as they were living their story.I found many parts of the story to be laugh-out-loud funny. In fact, I was laughing so hard that I had to put down the book to wipe my eyes. The situations as two rank amateurs get involved in uncovering a dastardly French agent were both thrilling and amusing. I especially liked the friends-to-lovers plot as Henrietta and Miles each realize that their long-standing friendship was growing into something more but who don't realize or believe that the other has come to the same realization.I like the modern parts of the story too which has Eloise wondering very much about Colin Selwick who is definitely a man of mystery. I am eager to carry on with this series to find out what happens next in 1803 and also what happens next for Eloise and Colin.

Okay, so it's kind of indulgent, but I really enjoy this series. They will never be great literature, but it's a fun story with dynamic characters and some excellent turns of phrase, and it follows along neatly in the footsteps of its predecessor, The Pink Carnation, as well as The Scarlet Pimpernel, albeit with a little more explicit content. As in the first book, there is a very explicit (multiple pages long) sex scene between a married couple, and it should NOT be read by children (says the girl who was accidentally loaned it by a family friend in seventh grade), but it is an enjoyable story that doesn't take itself too seriously, and the premise is way cool. I mean, female spies in the Napoleonic Wars? It doesn't get much cooler than that. This is totally wish-fulfillment historical chick lit (and I do NOT mean the sex scenes here, but the adventure part), and although I've seen it get some pretty bad press, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I am pretty choosy about books. The frame story makes it even cooler, and honestly, I'm just waiting for them to be made into movies.P.S. Thankfully, Lauren Willig stopped writing excruciatingly detailed sex scenes after the second book (this one). Something to look forward to. (:

Miles and Henrietta may be more bumbling as spies than the Pink Carnation and the Purple Gentian, but they just prove that anyone can be of service to their country if their hearts are in the right place! And, of course, they were a little distracted by the whole falling in love thing. They made a very cute couple!I enjoyed how the definitions from the Pink Carnation's code book at the beginning of each chapter informed what would happen in the chapter. The double meanings were great. And I liked how the modern-day story tied in with what was going on in the past.My only complaint is that the romance between Eloise and Colin in the present-day is proceeding very slowly. Guess I'll just have to continue with the rest of the series to see where they end up.

This is the second in the Pink Carnation series and I am finding these books very enjoyable. While they have romance, they also feature female adventurers, intrigue, and quite a bit of humor. These aren't meant for someone looking for a serious historical read or pure romantic fiction. These books are like delicious junk food that must occasionally be indulged in. I'd probably be bored if I read them straight through so I am saving them for when i need something light to cheer me up.

Very good characters and an enjoyable read. I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series.

Yet again, Ms. Willig impressed me with her lighthearted take on historical romance/mystery! Although I read these books in the completely WRONG order (first Emerald Ring, then Pink Carnationa, and finally Black Tulip), I was taken in by all of them--this one no less than the others. Although I felt that the "oh no heroine might be compromised marry her off quickly" story line was somewhat repetitive between this installment and Emerald Ring, the stories of Henrietta and Miles vs. Letty and Geoff were different enough to keep me intrigued. I'll just say that I can't wait for the 4th Pink Carnation novel!

I really liked the Miles and Hen characters in the first book, and looked forward to seeing their relationship evolve, and of course more great humor and spying, and more modern romance with our historian and Colin. My complaint with the first book was that Amy and Richard seemed too stupid to be successful as spies. Perhaps my complaint was heard, as some of the outlandishness was toned back, perhaps at the cost of humor. Plot-wise, quite good, but I also got the sense that the author was stretching content to prepare for a third book. This book needed more Colin, I think. I did not laugh uncontrollably at this book, or feel as compelled to read it all in one sitting. I wish I'd waited for the paperback--tradesize like the first one.

I like how the characters are strong willed and willing to stand up for themselves...female and male.
