This is a must read for a quality minded individual

Mr. Chalice has written an extremely informative guide for healthcare professionals and Lean practitioners in healthcare. His 46 steps are fairly well organized and he has several excellent appendices and resources quoted. However, his 40-page pontification on what is broken in healthcare (Chapter 1) is much too long. Don't get me wrong... he sends some excellent messages and states many facts that need to be stated. The problem is that he could have been just as effective in about 15-20 pages. He spends far too much time on the topic and also far too much time on his Democratic view of how government can/should fix the problems. Other than the political agenda/slant in chapter 1, the rest of the book is pretty informative and helpful.

Great book

This book is just as the title describes, a listing of 46 ideas. It would be most useful as a quick reference or if you are looking for a simple, efficient introduction to the subject. It does not serve as a replacement, however, to a greater understanding of the material.

Healthcare is broken and everyone knows it. What Robert Chalice identifies in this improvement book are the specifics of the problem and the steps to corrective measures, including cutting costs (while improving quality) by using lean practices. I found this book both well researched and useful. It is now more important than ever we are able to pull costs (waste) out of the system. Even a well-oiled machine has many parts that need grease. This book should be required reading of any healthcare practitioner and those involved in the policy debate.

I heard of Alicia Malone through the Screen Junkies YouTube channel where she appears on Movie Fights, where she competed against other contestants on modern topics. She has been a proponent of "old cinema" and I thought her book would be an exciting read, only to be slightly disappointed at how much this book resembled a wikipedia article rather than short stories about the famous women who contributed to cinema. Her book is divided into chapters of different eras of cinema, leading back to its dawn in the 19th century, and each chapter has quick biographies of notable women of the time, written in a conversational, candid, and light tone.The first few chapters were often a slog to read through because I was less interested in the older figures than modern filmmakers. The book also should have had a more thorough editor, allowing for quicker pacing, tighter chapters, and a better format (or perhaps that was just the fault of a poor format for Kindle). The book did not need to be placed in a chronological timeline as it is, as many of the modern women had influences that went back. If the book had been written with an interwoven format, where modern women and influences were mixed with older ones, the book would've been more interesting, keeping the reader engaged as well as connecting different women through the ages. But ultimately, this book felt like a reference PBS Special, where you would see images of women and their accomplishments, with a voiceover by Gwen Ifill (rest in peace) narrating their accomplishments, rather than a book that brought these women to life. Still, I enjoyed Alicia's tone guiding me through women that contributed greatly to film, but were forgotten. The most notable thing I learned was how women disappeared from important positions in cinema over the years, and came to be considered mainly sex objects in a male-driven industry. My favorite chapters were Alice Guy Blanche, Lois Weber, Rita Hayworth, and Marilyn Monroe. The last two were particularly awakening because we only know their public images.I'm excited to see what Alicia comes up with for her follow up. I'm glad she wrote this.

First of all you want facts and truth, especially regarding a subject where conversation is still being hushed (in 2017!). And of course the factsare there. But they are not merely facts, they are beautiful stories that range from the brave female cinematic trailblazers of the early 1900s to the visionary female directors of our generation (Ava!). Second and even more important is the signature Malone charm that takes you by the hand and guides through a century of film, making you feel for those women, their struggles, their ambition and their legacy.A true must buy for every film fan. I really hope Alicia writes more books and we are lucky enough to read them.

This is a very informative book if you want to learn more about the history of the women in film. From the first page, Alicia's charm grabs you instantly.Not only is this a great book on women in film, it's a great book on film period. There's so many stories I had never heard of, and Alicia's style of writing is easy to digest.Highly recommend this book if you're a film enthusiast!

I read this book as part of reading club and it was suggested by a group member who was very excited as she had heard Ms Malone on various podcast.After reading the intro I was excited as it was stated that this would profile 'the women in film history who were unsung.' As a lover of film history I was very excited to finally have the untold story of women in film laid out. Unfortunately I was very disappointed by the substance of the rest of the book. Instead of an in-depth analysis what followed were small blurbs highlighting different women throughout film history that could have easily been copied and pasted from an online encyclopedia. There was little analysis and a deeper reading of the contributions was entirely lacking, replaced merely with a brief bio snippets.As a lover of film history there were some interposing insights but I would have to say this book is very rudimentary and anyone with a deeper understanding of film history will have more then likely heard this before.I agree with most of Ms. Malone's inclusions but was a little shocked by a few women that were left out that I feel like deserved a deeper heralding. I know theres not enough space to dedicate to everyone but I was a bit alarmed that both Maya Deren - perhaps the most important experimental filmmaker of her generation as well as Nicole Holofcener who was a leader in early NYC independent film world and is one of the true geniuses of rom-com working today.

This book was one of my most anticipated reads for 2018. I couldn't wait to pick it up and when I did I liked it. But I didn't love it like I wanted to which could have been my own fault for having such high expectations.What I liked- I loved the whole premise of a "Hunger games" society where killers are being killed on an island for their crimes.- how when you first get into the book it just picks right up and throws you into the world of.- The descriptions of the island and the death scenes were awesome.-The tweets throughout the book, I loved getting to see what the outside world was saying about the island and the inmates. That made my reading experience so enjoyable.- Dee's story the kidnapping aspect was unexpected and I really enjoyed it (though I wish it would have been dragged out more and better developed)- THE BREAKFAST CLUB, I loved having a breakfast club in this book. It's one of my favorite movies and seeing a breakfast club type group was so much fun.-the twist at the end was also kind of fun.What I didn't like- The characters should have been developed way more. I didn't really care who lived and who died because I didn't know them. I wish I could have gotten to know them more.-the romance, I cannot stress this enough I need a romance to really be dragged out. We can't just be given two characters and have them start liking each other on page like 50. Their love didn't even really develop.- The first half of the book was so excellent and would have gotten a 5 stars from me if the murders would have been dragged out on the island. And we didn't all of sudden only start focusing on Dee. It was kind of frustrating I wanted more scenes with the Postmanic killers killing other characters in the book and we didn't get that.- Dee's story with her sister and even the kidnapping should have been dragged out way more. So we could have got to know her as a character so we would have been able to root for her alittle.In the endIt was a good book and so much fun to read and I'd still recommend it to fans of the "The hunger games" or "Scream". But I wish it would have fixed those issues for me personally so that I could give it a 5 stars because I really really wanted to when I first started reading it.

I was soooo excited for Gretchen McNeil's #murdertrending! I have always loved her thrillers! They're creepy, eerie, and suspenseful! #murdertrending is no different! It's a book that kept me on the edge of my seat eagerly turning the pages one after another dying to know what was going to happen and it was epic!Dee Guerrera was convicted of murdering her stepsister, even though she didn't do. The evidence against her was too damning. She awakes to find herself wearing a Cinderella gown outside a maze which she knows is on Alcatraz 2.0. What you need to know about Alcatraz 2.0 is that it's the latest reality TV sensation! Convicted murderers are sent here to live, work, and try to survive. For also on the island are a set of serial killers who basically go about killing the other murderers. It's a little convoluted in some sense as I didn't quite understand why the society of murderers weren't allowed to kill anyone or whatnot, but it's one of those things you just roll with.Anyway, Dee manages to survive her encounter with the famed Slycer, who has a penchant for dressing his victims up before running them through his maze of horror and killing them. Dee changed the rules and survived which sends fans into a frenzy, because it's all about the ratings. Dee is introduced to life on Alcatraz 2.0 by Nyles who acts as her tour guide. He supposedly poisoned his parents, but has diplomatic immunity and isn't allowed to be killed or harmed. Dee starts to learn that a lot of the serial killers are her own age or are of the young and pretty variety and starts to think that something is not quite right. She was innocent of her crime and the others claim their innocence too, and they aren't just saying it to say it.Though there's a change to life on Alcatraz 2.0, Dee was never a fan of the show because when she was young, she was kidnapped and seeing people imprisoned on an island set off triggers for her. Things aren't running as smoothly as they once did and it all started when Dee arrived which doesn't exactly endear herself to her new friends. Soon it will take everything she has just to survive the island with its maniac killers.There's definitely a lot of tension and suspense to this one! There's this elusive Postman who controls the island and it happenings. We don't see him much but for a chapter or two that's from his point of view, but it never really lets you in on his character type, just to see him in his sinister action! Also included throughout the book are excerpts of chatroom chats from fans. This was a creepy read in a sense because Dee is basically surrounded by criminals and THEN there are the actual killers who have free reign to kill people because society has already forsaken them for their previous crimes, whether they were just or not.I had strong suspicions about some things but I have to say I was still surprised by the outcome! I was on the right track, I just couldn't quite fit the pieces of the puzzle together.There's also just the tiniest bit of romance in the book, it wasn't much but it's just enough to give me happy tingles! Though of course, I was left theorizing too many things about all the characters so I wasn't all up in the swoony swing of things because I basically trusted no one! I feel like with all Gretchen's thrillers that's what I've learned to do; trust no one! Lol!#murdertrending is a read to keep you reading through the night and have you jumping at every sound! It's still a thriller at heart because people are kidnapped, people are killed, maniacs roam at night...no one is ever safe! But like all Gretchen McNeil novels, it's one that I enjoyed from beginning to end! The ending was pure perfection...resolution with just a touch of OH MY GOD! #murdertrending is just yet another example of why Gretchen is one of my favorite authors!Overall Rating 5/5 stars

Modernization endeavors of French officials are swept away as inefficient, untimely or inapplicable.I do not deny that colonialism bore inherently the seeds of its own destruction - suppression of subjects inevitably would instigate their opposition. On the other hand, colonialism is a very complex issue to be treated in terms of black and white. The author states - quite right - that creation of infrastructures in the colonized countries primarily aimed at serving colonialists' interests. However he fails to recognize that locals were also helped; many African states apply today the very same infrastructure installed by the colonialists. He also avoids to address the natural question: since colonialism is solely to be blamed for the degradation of African communities, why is poverty so widespread nowadays, so many years after their emancipation ? Why life conditions have deteriorated so dramatically ? To put all blame on the revenge of colonialists would be insufficient. According to my opinion, the impact of culture on social formation is largely underplayed.According to my viewpoint, the chapter on women issues is particularly weak. It is not clear to me why women did suffer more than men during the colonial rule. If this is the case, the author fails to demonstrate it adequately. He reports e.g. in p. 158 that in 1920s Gabonese women were left alone to grapple with the family smallholding while men migrated in order to work in the colonialist economy. It seems quite natural, however, that men migrate in order to meet jobs. To draw an analogy from today, is Germany to be blamed for the misfortunes of Turkish wives who remained home, after the emigration of their husbands ?Nevertheless, the book is interesting and the subject of French colonialism has been rarely treated in English.The reader will benefit from this work, provided that she is patient enough with the author's ideological obsessions.

Iâ€™m disappointed because on the surface, this book seemed to be exactly what I wanted: a very basic explanation and analysis of the Bible in chronological order.I found it painful to read and could not get very far into it due to the over use of dumb â€˜dad jokesâ€™ and bizzare puns and analogies. The authors were obviously attempting to be clever, but the amount of unnecessary commentary ruined the entire book.

I originally ordered to read through to make sure appropriate for husband who is just starting to read The Bible...I learned so many new things in easy way. Highly recommend!

It's a pretty dense topic to break into as a beginner. I feel like this book does what it can to simplify things while still giving tons of detail but doesn't fully succeed in giving you a clear checklist or flowchart to take away. Its still a comprehensive overview of project management and if you study it you will at least come away with a useful general knowledge.

This literally came in the mail the day the class started. lol But it's my fault for waiting till the last minute to get it, which resulted in it not being in the local book stores with just 3 business days left before the class was scheduled to start. The information it teaches is very valuable for anyone looking to get in management at any level in the corporate world. Take your time and don't wait until the last minute to start learning it, even if you DO seem to have a hard time finding your interest in what it teaches.

I bought this for a PM class. I like the level of detail and examples. It doesn't go into mind numbing detail but topics are addressed multiple times throughout the text. Nice flow. It uses one project as the primary example but there are other examples which are helpful.

The ebook version of this textbook does not use pages. It uses locations instead, which makes assignments more difficult. My instructor references pages for assignments in the syllabus. Locations force you to search for figures mentioned in a assignment instead of being able to find a specific page. The search feature does not provide positive results for every search. I recently was burned on an assignment that referenced page 172, figure 4-30. I could not find page 172 because of the locations and was unable to find figure 4-30 using the search feature. Figure 4-30 was buried in within the text of a review at the end of the chapter. I am still taking the class and have purchased the paperback version of the book.

Class would have been better with a different instructor, but thank god this book is well laid out and easy to follow. Used this for Management 391 - Intro to Project Management, and I will be referring back to this along with the PMBOK Guide throughout the rest of my academic career.

The 'Revised An Introduction to Project Management' is a great reference book for project manager and anyone who might be interest in this area. I like the level of detail about each topic and the examples provided,The only issue that I had was I purchase the digital version for my Samsung tablet, which meant I had to install the KIndle product. This was ok except there were no page numbers. As a result, I had to purchase the hard copy which was an added expense that I had not anticipated.

From shipping and arriving it is 5 stars. But as a subject and explanation I found other articles and Rita's book much better to clarify it. Kathy used a lot of philosophy to talk about something and online they just make it easier to understand it. If it was not for school I will not recommend it. Find alternative book.

I wasn't very happy with this text book. For topics discussed, I found more well written, clearer, and entertaining information for free via Google for free. The book was originally sold with a CD, which probably costs more than a download. however, because I bought the book for used, of course the CD was missing.The publisher would have a better product to sell if a download section were included on the web site.

Q>Everyday life in 17th-century Delft is so vivid in Girl with a Pearl Earring. How did you conduct your research? Where? A>Most of it, I confess, was done in my armchair. I read a lot (especially Simon Schama's The Embarrassment Of Riches: An Interpretation of Dutch Culture in The Golden Age) and looked at a lot of paintings. Luckily 17th-century Dutch paintings are mainly scenes from everyday life and so it was easy to see what houses looked like inside and how they were run. I also went to Delft for four days and just wandered around, taking it in. Vermeer's house no longer exists, but there are plenty of 17th-century buildings still left, as well as the Market Square, the Meat Hall, the canals and bridges. It's not hard to get an idea of what it was like then.Q>Little is known of Vermeer's life-at least compared with other Baroque painters like Rembrandt. Why did you choose Vermeer's work to write about? A>I chose Vermeer's work because it is so beautiful and so mysterious. In his paintings, the solitary women going about their domestic tasks-pouring milk, reading letters, weighing gold, putting on a necklace-inhabit a world that we are getting a secret glimpse at. And because it feels secret-the women don't seem to know we're looking at them-it seems also that something else is going on underneath, something mysterious we can't quite grasp. The fact that so little is known about Vermeer was happenstance-happily so, as it turned out, for it meant I could make up a lot without worrying about things being "true" or not. Q>Were you inspired by this particular painting or by Vermeer's work in general? A>I was inspired specifically by this particular painting, though I know his other work as well. A poster of this painting has hung on the wall of my bedroom since I was nineteen and I often lie in bed and look at it and wonder about it. It's such an open painting. I'm never sure what the girl is thinking or what her expression is. Sometimes she seems sad, other times seductive. So, one morning a couple years ago I was lying in bed worrying about what I was going to write next, and I looked up at the painting and wondered what Vermeer did or said to the model to get her to look like that. And right then I made up the story.Q>Is Girl with a Pearl Earring a true story? To what extent is it based in fact? A>It isn't a true story. No one knows who the girl is, or in fact who any of the people in his paintings are. Very little is known about Vermeer-he left no writings, not even any drawings, just 35 paintings. The few known facts are based on legal documents-his baptism, his marriage, the births of his children, his will. I was careful to be true to the known facts; for instance, he married Catharina Bolnes and they had eleven surviving children. Other facts are not so clear-cut and I had to make choices: he may or may not have lived in the house of his mother-in-law (I decided he did); he converted to Catholicism at the time of his marriage but not necessarily because Catharina was Catholic (I decided he did); he may have been friends with the scientist Antony van Leeuwenhoek, who invented the microscope (I decided he was). But there was a lot I simply made up.Q> You chose to give your novel the same title as the painting. Is there a greater purpose for this? What sort of a relationship do you see the novel and the painting having? A>The novel has the same name as the painting because the painting is the culmination of the story; its creation is what the story is leading up to. It also points up the earring, which is important as a symbol because it represents the world Griet gets drawn into and ultimately rejected from. The novel could not exist without the painting. I would never have written it, and I don't think it would have the same resonance with readers if the painting didn't exist.Q>Do you paint? If not, how did you learn about the process and tools? A>I don't paint, though I did take a painting class while writing this book so I could find out a little about how it's done. I was absolutely awful at it, but I learned a lot. I also read about Vermeer's painting technique, and spoke with the woman who restored the painting for the 1996 Vermeer exhibition. She was able to explain to me some of the finer details of how he painted. As for the paints and how they were made, I found some old books about making paints and learned from them. I also bought some linseed oil (which is mixed with pigment to make paint) and left the bottle open as I was writing so that I could smell what they would have smelled.Q> 17th-century literature reflected religious and social changes just like 17th-century painting. Milton's radical Paradise Lost was published during this time. Did you consider this sort of thing when writing an historical novel? A> I didn't consider Paradise Lost, but clearly religious change in the Netherlands at the time was a very important issue. The Dutch had just thrown off the rule of the Catholic Spanish and were keen to distance themselves from Catholicism. Protestantism suited their natures. The Dutch Catholics were tolerated but were seen as slightly outside the system, which is fascinating when you consider that Vermeer actually converted to Catholicism, and so chose to be a maverick. You have to consider religious and social change when writing historical novels. They are essential to the push and pull of the story. In fact, all my novels are historical and set during periods of great social change. My first novel, The Virgin Blue (published in Britain), is set during the 16th-century Reformation in France, and the novel I'm working on now is set in England at the beginning of the 20th-century and up through World War I. Q>While reading the novel, I couldn't help examining and re-examining the painting every few pages. Did you write the novel with the painting at hand? A>Oh yes. With all his paintings, in fact. I kept the catalogue from the 1996 Vermeer exhibition almost permanently open. Most of the characters' looks are based on people in his other paintings.I had the whole story worked out (except for the odd detail) before I started writing. This is unusual for me. Often I know only some of the story before I start writing. This book was a dream to write because of that and because the style is so spare. Q>Why the camera obscura? It plays such an important part, lending all sorts of ideas about technology and foreshadowing what's to come.A>The camera obscura is a tangible representation of a different way of looking. Griet has the capacity to look in a different way, but she needs Vermeer to show her how. He does that partly with the help of the camera obscura. It also reminds us that in order to see clearly you have to focus, shut out the world and look at one corner of a room. That is what Vermeer's paintings do-they reveal the world in a room. That is also what the novel tries to do-it is deliberately narrow and focused, and in it is a whole world.Q>What's next? Are you ready to work on another historical novel? A>Yes. The next novel is set in a Victorian cemetery in London at the turn of the century and up through World War I. It's about two girls whose families have adjacent plots at the cemetery, and the apprentice gravedigger they meet there. In a wider sense the book is about the changing values at the beginning of the modern era, looked at through the changing attitudes to death and mourning. The Victorians bought elaborate tombs for their dead and followed strict and elaborate mourning rituals, but by the end of World War I graves became much simpler and mourning was conducted in private. Why did this change occur? The book attempts to answer that. I can't seem to write a contemporary novel. I suppose I'm more comfortable in the past, where I know what is important and lasting. If I write about today, I worry that it will date in ten years' time.

Ms. Chevalier's fictional account of Griet and her employment in the Vermeer household could very well have happened in just that way since history knows so little of the master painter. Griet, probably a shortened form of Marguerite, certainly was the muse of Johannes Vermeer. A relationship developed between the two; maybe it was intimate, maybe not. But it was certainly meaningful and impacted both of their lives and the entire Vermeer household.One gets a sense of what Dutch life was like in Delft, Holland in 1665 and thereabouts during the time when many Dutch people were sailing to the New World.

This book for reasons i dont know intimidated me. I had it for a while before reading it. This book is very readable. It was easy to keep track of characters and grasp the social understandings of the time. The characters were complex. The artist for instance was at once powerful, talented, meek, selfish, and sensitive. I dont like reviews that eliminates the need to read the book. Therefore i wont reveal a lot. It is about social expectations and people connecting despite a differing social standing. Go ahead and read it.

The book was assigned reading for an art class I took, and I'm really glad it was assigned. The book is a fictional story created to give Vermeer's painting of the same name a story behind the painting, which was very clever. The descriptions are beautiful. It was also nice to get a glimpse into the life and mind of a common girl. The majority of books set during the time, both fiction and non-fiction, are written from the perspective of a noble person. This book was a nice deviation from that. Don't expect non-stop action, or big plot twists, because there aren't any. The story is paced like you'd expect to see if reading someone's journal.

Is an engrossing work told in the first person by the girl herself, a poor girl who is sent out to be a servant in the house of the Dutch artist Vermeer. She is burdened from the very first by numerous chores, has few hopes for happiness and few pleasures. He finds in her a curious mind and willing spirit. She learns how to grind colors for him, and he eventually asks her to pose. The painting is one almost as famous as the Mona Lisa with almost as enigmatic an expression. The reader gains a brief glimpse into the times, thankful not to have been a part of them.

Wonderful and captivating, I read it in two sittings. Griet is a very quiet but perceptive and intelligent girl, I found myself agreeing with all of her thoughts and observations. The relationships between all of the characters are very complex and they fall into no true category of love/hate/envy, the characters are very human and flawed. I loved the writing, the majority of the story is told through Griet's stream of consciousness so we only learn to understand her environment from her perspective. Which worked for me since I loved her character. I am not a history buff so I can't say this is 100% historically accurate, but from what I have learned and assume these times to be like, I found it to be true. The ending is bittersweet but satisfying, the places all of the characters end up make sense and no aspects of the story are left unattended. Overall, a great story very much worth the read, the movie is also great and true to the book.

This book is such a wonderful read. I was originally attracted to this story because I've always liked Vermeer's paintings. I also have been fascinated with how he made them. Many learned people have speculated on this. Did he use a camera obscura? Did he use a combination of mirrors? Just how did Vermeer manage to craft such razor sharp photographic-like images to make his stunning paintings long before the invention of photography? This was a burning question I hoped would be answered in this book. But after I got into the first few pages all this stuff became secondary as Tracy Chevalier pulled me into another place and another time. Chevalier presents us with characters that could easily have lived in our own time with all of the beauty and all of the flaws we contemporary people possess. We realize that although these people didn't have the benefit of iPads, the International Space Station, or texting on smart phones, they were equal to us in every way.
