Super cute illustrations, but the experience described in going to the beach is really outdated (understandably). It was interesting to see the mid-century version of a day at the beach, but I was surprised how many differences there are between that and my daughter's vacation experience, which we were seeking to relive in book form :) Unless these things are a "West Coast" thing. Here's the plot:The kids wake up and hurry downstairs to eat breakfast, after putting their "sun suits" onThe kids, parents and puppy take the bus to the beachThey get to the beach and stop at the stand to buy buckets and toysThey go to the changing rooms and change into their bathing suitsPlay on the beach - draw with sticks, chase crabs, etc, timeless activitiesThe little girl holds onto a rope in the ocean anchored by stakes, so she can kick in the waves safelyMom calls them for a picnic and they "are hungry as bears, they eat and eat and eat!" The end. Clunky ending, you'd think for all the detail they described they'd watch the sunset and go home, its funny that the big result of their beach day is "we worked up an appetite for cookies and oranges in wax paper!"I recommend Seashore Baby for little toddlers, it has flaps. We do love this book, but I do a lot of paraphrasing.

In this Golden classic, two children spend a day at the shore. If you are a parent and born after 1985, you may be appalled at the freedom these children have during their day at the shore. This is another wonderful Golden Classic for those of us that remember the bicentennial or if you like older stories.

This arrived today and already my 2 1/2 year old and 18 month old boys have begged me to read this to them a dozen times (the little one cries out "seashore! seashore!). The illustrations are simply darling and the story is simple and charming. This is clearly going to be a favorite in our house. I wish Little Golden Books would release new printings of other Connie Malvern illustrated books - they are too cute!

I love this book, and my kids love it too! The simple rhyming stories and pictures of a family going to the beach in the 50’s is just fun, happy reading. We have two copies because I thought I’d lost one and couldn’t bear the thought.

One of the great vintage Golden Books! My 11-month-old wants to read this over and over. We got her a few books about the beach so that she would know what to expect on her first vacation, and I think it worked. This one is the perfect length and has nice sing-songy rhyming text for toddlers.

My 2 year old loves little golden books but this one is just not very well written. Also bugs me that the girl character is the one afraid of the water, it's a little dated.

this artwork and story are so nostalgic. Little kids will still love it. Going to the beach hasn't changed that much for families since this book was first printed.

I was actually looking the a book called A Day at the Beach and thought this was the same book but it is not. It was still a very cute book for kids.

Music notation programs are by necessity fairly complex. MuseScore is a user supported program that directly competes with some rather expensive professional products. My needs were such that paying for and keeping a commercial product current was not a viable option. I discovered MuseScore in its earlier 1.x version and was immensely pleased with the upgrade to 2.x. The old documentation was so-so (for version 1.x) but barely adequate. (It could be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF.) Note: I did have some previous experience with a commercial notation program about a decade back... but keeping it current (as the computer OS was upgraded) was not cost effective for my needs.)Version 2 of MuseScore is a much more polished program. The online instructions/reference manual are far more polished than the 1.x version... it is accessed through a browser -- and can be downloaded as a PDF. The online reference manual is a bit terse at times, making it necessary to experiment a bit to "get" how a feature works. The book is a well thought out explanation of the program -- it's independently produced and has about double the page count of the online instructions. It has numerous screen grabs as illustrations. (Minor gripe is that they're from a Windows computer and look clunky compared to the windows on a Mac.) Each chapter had a brief chart of the functions (and related commands) covered therein. Obviously with a book, you can place sticky notes -- and even keep a couple of fingers in the book so you can flip back and forth between relevant sections as you work on a notation project. (Once you're more experienced with the program, the need to have the reference manual at had will be reduced -- but there are many features that one might not encounter frequently, and having a reference manual is a big help

This is an excellent book to get the most out of MuseScore, which is an amazing piece of music notation software. Especially with the release of version 2 of MuseScore the program took a great leap in complexity so a book like this is a great adjunct to the online help that is built-in to the program. Marc has taken great pains to lay this book out in an orderly fashion so that anybody new to MuseScore, whether brand new to computer music notation software or moving over from some other program like Finale or Sibelius. Part of the price of this book helps to underwrite the continued development of the software, which is a great thing. I've been a long-time user of both Finale and Sibelius and I love MuseScore and recommend it to all my students and anybody who asks for a recommendation. And I will start suggesting that they all buy this book, too!

I love this book...MuseScore is a marvellous free program for composing or transposing music. I play recorders, particularly a bass recorder and I like the sound of the bass, but with much music written for soprano or alto recorder, requires mental gymnastics to play as written in the treble clef when one is used to music written on the bass clef staff, and MuseScore enables easy transposing of treble clef music into the bass clef. In any event, the MuseScore program has a million and one ways one can do all kinds of things, and this book, "Mastering MuseScore..." clearly and accurately defines what you can do with the program, and the various ways in which you can do it. If one is going to use MuseScore to write and print music, this book is a must-have for information and consultation when one wants to do something but doesn't quite yet know how. It covers all the bases.

MuseScore 2.3 isa free and open-source music notation program for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It explores the process of note entry and editing including chord symbols, slash notation, time signatures, repeats, tablature, hidden items and more.. It is easy to read and follow, and I've always had good luck looking something up when I have come to a dead-end trying to figure out one of the more esoteric features of Musescore 2.3. Lots of illustrations are included for ease of use. MASTERING MUSESCORE is everything I needed to find out about the inner workings of using MuseScore, which is so powerful that many features may be overlooked without a good book like this. Musescore is free music notation software, but I'm so glad I bought the book, so I can master it. Literally.

Learning MuseScore hasn't been easy for me. The online FAQ or "manual" leaves a lot to be desired. Enter the Mastering MuseScore book! Wow! What a difference. Search the topical index in the back of the book and go to the page(s) that tell you what you need to know. A simple concept that worked for decades and in this case, much better than online. I'm just a beginner and this book has saved me much frustration. I highly recommend it, especially if you are just getting started. Kudos to the authors!

The MuseScore program is free, but learning how to use it is challenging. That's not due to deficiencies in the program design, but because music notation is inherently pretty complicated, and it takes some time to figure out which options work best for the particular score you're trying to create. This manual makes it easier -- and purchases help support a wonderful open-source project.

I have been using MuseScore for about a year now. It is a wonderful program. This book will help me get to the next level in composition and providing beautiful scores. This complete book of MuseScoreology leaves no stone unturned. If you have questions, this book will provide the answers. Great job Marc!!

Musecore is relatively easy to use and the book is absolutely invaluable. I use Musescore almost every day to create singing version of songs - in midi format - so I can practice the piano accompaniment, I do the same with cello duets - once again so I can practice the cello accompaniment. And for my Rounds & Canons group I can send out our songs in PDF format and also create MP3 files by first exporting the Musecore song in midi format and then using GarageBand to convert the midi file to an MP3 file. Love Musecore!

I know some people who are treating this book as if it were the newest book of the Bible. Well, in fairness, it does contain some significant revelations, and it's a tale of good and evil. That's the good news. The bad news is that the book is (a) extremely disjointed and (b) full of extraneous information, some of it personal and some seemingly irrelevant. Thus, the book is longer than it should be, and the extraneous information muddles things up for no good reason. The basic story that Lewis tells is good; it's got good guys and not-so-good guys, financial chicanery and other things (sorry, no sex) that would be interesting on their own. And he certainly has a point - that our market system is rigged (a point with which I'm inclined to agree). But then he distracts us with lots of techno-jargon; the story of Goldman Sachs's role in prosecuting someone for stealing what seems to be public data that's of little use to him; and a weird discussion at the end about women bikers. (In fairness, the prosecution is not entirely irrelevant, but Lewis seems to be unsure whether to use it as a paradigm for Goldman's intrinsic evil or good, so it turns out to be unnecessary.)I've never been a big fan of Lewis; he's always struck me as being inordinately impressed with his own cleverness (not that he's not clever), and this book doesn't do anything to dispel my prejudices.Lastly, it's interesting (but another disappointment) that while Lewis praises his copy editor, I caught two rather obvious typos early on. I know he's a ragingly successful author, but really!

If you have been watching economic news this week, you will have heard that the British pound collapsed in a “flash crash.” Most news stories leave it at that. (I suspect that’s because they don’t know what a flash crash really is.) Put simply (and in Flash Boys Michael Lewis explains this recurring phenomenon quite simply) a flash crash is how high frequency traders use computers, multiple exchanges and time to abuse the rules. Now that I’ve summarized that, let me back up a second and deconstruct the sentence. First, what are the rules? In 2007, after brokers were found to have been abusing customers’ trust once too often, the government came out with what’s called Reg NMS. This regulation (and here I am just going to quote Michael Lewis directly because I don’t think I can say it any better than he did). Reg NMS mandated that brokers buy shares at the best price. “To define best price, Reg NMS relied on the concept of the National Best Bid and Offer. If an investor wished to buy 10,000 shares of Microsoft, and 100 shares were offered on the BATS exchange at $30 a share, while the full 10,000 listed on the other twelve exchanges were offered at $30.01, his broker was required to purchase the 100 shares at Bats before moving on to other exchanges.”This meant that anyone with a computer can see where a purchase is going to be made and for how much. So if you have a faster connection (and several exchanges where you can sell a few shares of a stock, you can already see how you can make money.) Sure, you won’t make a lot of money from any one trade. Maybe less than half a cent here and half a cent there. But that adds up. I know this from first-hand experience. The other day at work, I was trying to calculate what would the cost be of a service was excluded from a package of services. And my calculation kept being almost a billion off. I did it and re-did and re-did it every which way I could think of. I even pulled down my stats book to see if my math was off. Nothing. I got up and went for a cup of coffee just to take a break from this ridiculous problem and when I sat down again, I saw it. It was a rounding error. To be exact it was a rounding error in the one/thousandth decimal place. But I was dealing with billions of dollars and that rounding error made quite a difference. So yes, parts of pennies add up. But wait, there’s more. The way the best price is computed is when an exchange computes all the bids and offers on a particular stock. This computation is done by a government computer and if you know one thing about government, you will know that it takes years to upgrade computers. That means that if you have your own, faster computer you can “front-run” the official best price and sell and buy 100s of shares at the “real” best price. Sure it will be a “rounding error” but as I said before, those rounding errors matter. So a rule that was intended to create equity and transparency in the market in fact institutionalized inequality between the traders who had access to the super-fast computers and those who did not. Only the former would make money from these rounding errors. But wait, there is yet more. To make full use of Reg NMS you also need many different exchanges or dark pools and dark cables. And guess what, both exist. Dark cables are cables that are optimized for speed of transaction. Sure it’s a millisecond difference or even less but in that time you can get a lot of rounding errors. Dark pools are, in essence, proprietary exchanges. They exist to make it easier for institutional investors (like the folks to whom you entrust your pension and mortgage, for example) to trade in large blocks. So, for example if you have one million shares of Microsoft you want to sell (or buy) but don’t want your identity known, you would rather sell/buy those shares away from the glaring eye of the public transaction. Here’s the problem, if your are a high frequency trader, you (by definition) have a super-fast computer and access to dark cables. That means you can “ping” the many, many dark pools that have been set up. By some estimates, 40% of all trading is now done inside dark pools. And that in turn means you can know, well before the government-issued slow computers have finished calculating the best price what the real selling price is. That’s one heck of a rounding error in your pocket. And finally, to make all this work, you need volatility. All volatility means is that the price of something moves up and down a lot. And obviously if it does that, there is a lot more room for a high-frequency trader to essentially insert him/herself in the middle of that trade. Basically here’s the way it works. You want to buy those 10,000 shares of Microsoft for $30. There’s a dark pool that will sell 100 of them to you for that price. I, as a high-frequency trader, ping that dark pool, know what the price you’re willing to buy for is and all the other prices out there and where you will buy from next. So I go and buy the next batch of Microsoft shares that are selling (as you will recall at $30.01). Now, your broker, by law, has to come and buy the shares from me. Except I sell the shares now at $30.1001. And right there, in less than the blink of an eye I have made almost $10. And that’s from a mere 9,900 shares—a small trade. So what high-frequency traders do in effect is charge a tax for trading. And that tax (like most taxes) makes economic activity, in this case people’s willingness to trade to decrease. It also means that flash crashes, caused when a front-running computer algorithm gets too clever by half, are inevitable. In Flash Boys, Lewis explains all of this a little at a time. In some ways, the book reads like a great detective story. And like a great detective story, it is eminently readable because at its heart is a kind of hero: Brad Katsuyama. Brad sets out to hire a lot of computer programmers to beat the system. First he introduced Thor. This was a platform that enabled you to trade more slowly and then a brand new exchange called IEX (an exchange—and yes, it got the license to be an actual exchange) that did the same thing. The idea behind Thor and IEX seems counter-intuitive but in a high-frequency world it works. If you trade many thousands of shares per trade, then it makes sense that your order should arrive at all the exchanges/dark pools at the same time. That way no-one can ping/front-run you. You will not, in other words, be paying a tax on your trade. So to get the high-frequency traders out of the loop, you need to trade just slowly enough that your orders arrive at all exchanges at the same time. This is the story of how Brad and the motley crew he gathered around him came up with that idea, the push-back they initially got from the industry and how they eventually sold the industry, including Goldman Sachs, on the concept. It is a story well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

One of the things I enjoy about Lewis's writing is his ability to explain difficult and complicated subjects. This one on high speed stock trading was no exception. Even though I am in the financial services field, there are aspects of this topic that were totally mystifying. Glad to see I had a lot of company and glad to see steps are being taken to reduce the opportunity to pick your pocket when trading stocks. The techniques may be legal, but they are far from fair or ethical. I think this book is best suited for those with some background in finance or serious investors. An enjoyable read if your interest lies in this direction.

Well, maybe I don't love it. Maybe I like it. I am prejudiced. Michael Lewis is unmatched in being able to explain clearly some of the more complex machinations of the money markets. In this case, the issue is manipulation of the stock market by having better technology..and putting it close to trading floor. OK, I know that does not make much sense on the face of it, but read the book. But it is another way the large, programmatic traders can beat the little guy--and Lewis makes the point without it becoming a Message. The Canadians are heroes (and how often do you read that in a review of a Wall Street subject?) The market is generally unscrupulous. It is unlikely to be fixed (if it is 'fixable') so long as we don't understand it..and most of us do not. Michel Lewis is the guy who can explain everything.

The design is better than I could see in the photo—there is a gold detail and embossing on the cover, back and spine. Best of all: All of the layouts (except the first two pages and very back page) are of the same layout you see in the photos. There are no other workbook-like sections and it doesn't change up the layout on you at different places in the book as I've noticed with similar kinds of journals and planners. Lastly, there is a pocket in the back where I'll keep my maps—which is a nice detail that I didn't notice when first reading the description. I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality of the book for the price, and I can't wait to fill it up.

This makes it so much easier than just a notebook. It's a lot more organized and I don't have to think about what I need to write down every time.

Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this! I don't actually go camping and basically just bought this to use/alter for Camp Nanowrimo because I just loved the plaid pattern and designs style. Now, despite the fact that I admittedly don't plan to use this as an actual camping log, I do feel that this would benefit from some revision of sorts. There is only ONE page each to record the details of your camping details and for pictures/notes - which, even if I had bought this for camping, seems wholly inadequate. I think there should be AT LEAST two - and, IMO, I'd prefer three - pages for notes and pictures. Again, despite the fact that I personally plan to alter this to suit my needs and do not actually go camping, I felt that if I did go camping, I would DEFINITELY want 2-3 pages for notes and pictures. As it is, there is no good way to record thoughts/notes at all because even the one page that is designated for notes/photos is actually blank. IMO, a better variation on this theme/journal would have 4-6 pages PER camping experience/adventure, to give enough space to record the objective details (such as location, dates of travel etc) but then also allocate enough space to jot down some thoughts and at least a couple of pages for pictures.Bottom line: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the size and feel of this. It's beautiful, sturdy and even for my purposes well worth the price I paid. The paper seems to be really good quality as well. I just wish that the people who designed this allowed a little more room for the "journaling" part of the camping experience!

This book is easy to use and has just enough space to write about trips in your RV. It's not too small and not too large - an average size book actually. I use the prompts as reminders to enter all the important details. I would purchase this again.

Love this book! Will put all site details in it each time we camp, that way through the years I can remember what sites # we liked. Also love that I can capture my daughters favorite things about each trip.

I love this book, so cool to be traveling around and writing down all your memorable moments . I can’t wait to look back on my writings.

I LOVE this travel book. I am now more apt to fill in my log of travels because you just fill n the blanks! Then add pictures on the picture page.

We wanted a book to keep in our camper. We love that it has prompt questions, nice hard cover and solid. Great purchase!

The Pursuit of Unhappiness: The Elusive Psychology of Well-Being

Review

Review from previous edition: "Insightful and imaginative. A serious pleasurable read for those happy enough to explore a difficult subject." --Paul O'Doherty, Irish Times"Subtitled 'the elusive pscychology of well-being', this is a brilliant and comprehensive philosophical treatment of happiness in the psychological sense... The book calls us to rethink our assumptions about the good life and the good society, raising many of the questions explored by AldousHuxley in Brave New World and Island. All this raises interesting and complex questions for politicians and educationalist as they grapple with introducing happiness studies into the curriculum." --Psychology/Parasychology"An original and thorough investigation, richly informed by empirical psychology, of almost every topic connected, or seen as connected, with happiness: the self, well-being and virtue, and the good society. It is written in an engaging, often humorous, sometimes poetic, style, and contains awealth of illustrations from life, literature, film, science, the arts, the news media, and Haybron's own prodigious imagination... It is safe to say that, after this book, happiness will never be the same again." --Neera Badhwar, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews"A prodigious act of scholarship whose comprehensiveness dwarfs previous efforts. The best single source for empirical and philosophical approaches to investigating happiness. A highly nuanced treatment that rewards the reader with its frequent and original insights." --Robert L. Woolfolk, Princeton University"Haybron's book is a perfect example of how philosophical ethics can matter beyond the academy as well as within it. This original book is an acute, engaging, and well-informed discussion of an issue of concern to every human being." --Roger Crisp, University of Oxford"Daniel Haybron has written a rare book that combines philosophical sophistication with detailed knowledge of, and respect for, the psychological literature. He integrates the best that philosophy and psychology have to offer in pursuit of an answer to the question that matters above allothers: how we ought to live. The result is a book that will edify psychologists and philosophers alike." --Barry Schwartz, Swarthmore College"Both progress and provocation are vibrantly on display in Dan Haybron's oustanding new book, The Pursuit of Unhappiness. The book is a model of humanistic inquiry: acute philosophical argumentation disciplined by close and careful attention to the latest and best in the sciences of mind, everywhere textured by a keen eye for what it is to be a person - and why it matters." --John M. Doris, Washington University in St Louis"Dan Haybron has written the definitive philosophical book on happiness, and it is a must-read for scholars of the good life. The work is broad, balanced, and interesting, and yet forcefully presents the case that happiness is a crucial element of good living. In making the argument, Haybronbeautifully reviews both the philosophy of happiness, including what this concept means, and the empirical work on the topics arising in fields such as psychology and economics." --Ed Diener, Universtiy of Illinois"Dan Haybron asks the key philosophical questions about happiness: what is happiness, and how can we know about it, and what is it good for? His book offers insightful answers that are well-grounded in both science and philosophy. The book is full of clear and rigorous arguments, but at thesame time it is a pleasure to read. It will be a milestone in the philosophical discussion of happiness." --David Chalmers, Australian National University

Haybron claims that there is a liberal optimism about people's aptitude to find happiness through the benefits of freedom. I disagree. He is an awful historian, apparently. Giving people freedom isn't just a matter of optimism about their nature as highly rational beings. I actually generally consider the justification of increased freedom to be pessimism regarding the wisdom of mobs and all powerful leaders (hence our system of checks and balances). Giving people freedom could be viewed as a form of harm reduction in such a case. The extreme unhappiness people can suffer from living in a dictatorship or a less free society is something I want to avoid. While having more freedom might not be ideal for happiness, the alternatives aren't either. I liked the parts of the book about the nature of happiness and some of his discussion of well being (minus the moralistic crap). However, his discussion of the pursuit of happiness/unhappiness is honestly the kind of rhetoric you see from the authoritarian left and the Puritanical right wing types. Communism was an example of such an approach gone horribly wrong. "The group knows what is best for you." "The government can help you be happier and knows what's best for you." "The government will save you from yourself." "We are just trying to make sure everyone is healthy and happy, so we're bringing these restrictions. If you violate them, then you must be punished." The founding fathers of the United States knew that such paternalism (or on the left you also have maternalism now) could easily turn disastrous. Haybron should have stuck to what he does best: analyzing what happiness is. He got in over his head discussing policy and societal change.I would turn Haybron's claims in their head and say that Haybron has embarrassingly naive paternalist optimism. I mean, how does he propose to control people? Casting them out? That's what they did in many "traditional" societies. It's not like there weren't people who had interests in different ways of life. They were just not always treated so well. Does Haybron propose putting more people in prison if they aren't living a life that is conducive enough to his vision of what is good for them? You don't have to look far in modern America to find an example of the government imposing "prudence" on its people. Consider the war on drugs. The drug war has not worked. We have more people in prison in the USA, per capita, than any other country. How does throwing someone in prison benefit their well being? How are we to restrict freedoms? Does he consider how freedom restriction was enforced in the past? It wasn't good for those who happened to violate the norms... For those who did not have idiosyncratic preferences or who happened to agree with the majority, it was fine. One other thing Haybron gets totally wrong is implying (or maybe he outright stated it) that in a "liberal" society, people aren't really governed by norms or traditions so much anymore. I don't see that at all. Plenty of people in the USA are definitely guided by tradition and norms... hence the taboos we have about sex, drugs, etc. Plenty of people aren't that liberal and our laws aren't that liberal. In some states, there are quite conservative laws and cultures. The history of the USA is one of Puritanical repression and plenty of group-think. I don't read about Puritans and wish I lived like them. Haybron seems concerned with learning about the universe and human nature. There was no place for that in many "traditional" societies. If you wanted to think scientifically and it went against the herd, you would have some problems (it wouldn't be so conducive to your happiness).I wonder what this conservative utopia Haybron has somewhere in his mind would look like. Did he read Plato's Republic too many times or something? It's easy to be a critic (like Haybron is), but not as easy to talk about specific policy or cultural changes. I mean, if he actually has some cultural suggestions, it would be interesting to hear them. I honestly would prefer policy and cultural recommendations from someone less idealistic, someone with less utopian thinking, and someone who doesn't glorify "the way things were" though (they weren't too good!). Even in "collectivistic" cultures, one could argue that people having individual rights benefit the group as they are more likely to contribute in a way to the group that they otherwise wouldn't. Haybron admits this to some degree in his book Happiness: A Very Short Introduction. David Wong made this point in detail in his book Natural Moralities (giving examples). I think the differences between "individualistic" and "collectivistic" cultures are sometimes overblown in an attempt to romanticize "collectivistic" cultures. For examples of unhappy "traditional" cultures, see Robert Edgerton's book Sick Societies. Also, maybe read about the Yanomamo... a pretty violent and misogynistic "traditional" culture. If you downplay reason and glorify group think, that is what you can get... It's kind of the luck of the draw in such societies: you could end up with a situation where one ignorant violent group dominates or a situation that is more egalitarian in such a case. However, since rights and democracy aren't explicitly valued, it's much more up to chance. I think Haybron was trying too hard to be original, cutting edge and different when writing about modern "liberal" societies. However, he failed, miserably. I also think he clearly has an issue with "liberal" America. He has a serious axe to grind and it comes through. I wonder why he doesn't go live with the Amish if they're so much better. There are problems I saw with Haybron's analysis of happiness. Like most philosophers, he has an obvious bias against the importance of pleasure and against hedonism. He generally talks about hedonism using a narrow conception of the term. He really tried to make sure that no one could be a hedonist and use his conception of happiness. I think he failed at that. He admitted that engagement and attunement states are described as pleasant. He also gave very little discussion of the different between positive and negative emotions. He just claimed that positive emotions are those we approach and negative emotions are those we withdraw from. And WHY do we approach positive emotions? Maybe because they are enjoyable? LOL I just think there is needless bias against hedonism (hedonism closer to that of the epicureans who didn't just focus on fleeting pleasures). He purposely mentioned the Stoics as a example of those who sought happiness in the form of attunement when the Epicureans would have been a better example since they focused way more on attunement. Otherwise, he made many insightful points about happiness and I found many of his points helpful. I charitably gave the book 2 stars since I really liked the sections regarding the nature and significance of happiness.

This extremely interesting and in places downright fascinating book is worth every penny you spend to acquire it. Sure, it's a hardback, but get it anyway: you'll probably want to re-read it. Haybron's title mentions unhappiness, but this is not a catalogue of the myriad ways in which we are, or can be, unhappy -- though he thinks we're less happy than we could be. He writes exceptionally well, and he thinks clearly. Indeed it's hard to imagine that this book hasn't been the product of decades of reflection on the weighty matter of human well-being and contentedness, for he seems very wise. He's a philosopher but there are many examples in it, and a number of "practical" asides, and a goodly number of references to, and quotations from, works of literature. Above all, he is someone who has absorbed work done in other disciplines, principally psychology. He is a cautious rather than a dogmatic writer, though after he treats such themes as psychic affirmation, self-fulfillment (not in the sappy, New Age sense), the role of the emotions in our happiness, and so on, he concludes that we should live our lives in a more contextualist fashion. By this contextualism I take it that he means a kind of communitarian liberalism, something he thinks would be more conducive to our flourishing and happiness. For a work of philosophy this has some amusing parts (Haybron talks about Pollyannas vs Kvetches). He discusses -- generally in passing -- a number of thinkers and views. One will find references to Bentham, Plato, Nietzsche, Mill, Freud, Aristotle, etc. (in addition to writers like Hemingway, Thoreau, Forster and Pound). Using evidence from narratives, oral reports, novels and works of philosophy, and above all from studies in psychology and economics, Haybron shows that the major (popular) ethical theories philosophers discuss (Kantianism, utilitarianism, virtue theory) are not fine-grained enough when it comes to treating the question of happiness/flourishing. Integrating the insights of psychological investigations into philosophy will help in providing what is missing. Ultimately his target is what he calls the Personal Authority position, the view that we know ourselves best/well and therefore know what is best for our flourishing. This target is a form of "transparency" subjectivism, which he rightly argues is incompatible with the evidence. Haybron defends a version of mild objectivism, which he says is distinct from Aristotelian and other virtue/perfectionist positions, but which seems quasi-Aristotelian to me (I'll defer to Haybron). Overall, he wants us to rethink some of the more individualistic and selfish attitudes engendered by liberal modernity, without throwing the liberal baby out with the subjectivist/individualist bathwater. It could make us happier.

This book systematically critiques the idea that people are by default capable of pursuing their own well-being. The author's arguments are cogent, and he is precise without eschewing the difficult-to-articulate. This book could greatly alter your worldview. It is very much worth reading.
