A marriage of convenience to the man she has loved since childhood... Talk about entering an emotional mine field but Ellen is determined to keep her feelings to herself. I just wondered how long it would take Marcus to figure out he loves her. In truth he was always kind and caring so falling in love was an easy step. Just took a big snow storm to figure it out. I was a little surprised that Marcus's brother was more sensitive to Ellen's feelings than Marcus's mother was. I expected her to be the wise one. The big blow up bringing things to a head came as a surprise to me since Ellen had been keeping everything inside and coping as best she could but there had to be a blow up or things could never resolve... I thought the story was well written and I liked the main characters. Often in these marriage of convenience books, one spouse completely ignores the other but that was not the case in this book. I liked that they were pleasant with each other and had a good relationship even though they weren't going to be starting their family any time soon if you know what I mean... ha.Sex: a kissLanguage: noViolence: no
A very sweet novel with not even a kiss between the hero and heroine... and that's my one complaint. I would have liked at least one kiss, which would have brought up even more tumultuous feelings of confusion, love, desire, commitment. I like the fact that this author does her research into the time period, uses appropriate language for the time, and creates characters who aren't carbon copies of every other character we've seen in a HEA. If you like super-clean romances, this is a fine choice. And even if you don't, these characters are relatable and endearing.
I almost skipped this book altogether because it has such a silly title, but I’m glad I didn’t. I very much enjoyed it. Sure, it got a little cookie-cutter at times, but what regency romance doesn’t? I quite liked both Marcus and Ellen, despite rolling my eyes at them every once in a while — while many of the ‘marriage of convenience’ factors were on display (eg, given the background, amiability, and expectations with which they entered this marriage, I honestly didn’t understand their lack of a wedding night or any subsequent similar interaction except as a plot design), they kept things together far better than similar couples in other books and I found that quite refreshing. This was my first first book by this author, and I’ll definitely try another.
Ellen and Marcus were childhood friends and she’s loved him for years. Marcus, a second son, needs a wife in order to get his inheritance. Ellen is 26 years old and is not looking forward to the life of a spinster without a home of her own. Their friends knowing both their circumstances, play matchmaker and a practical, convenient marriage is the result. The story is true to the times, the main characters interesting and it is well written. There is however an elephant in the room. They talk of having children in the future but never address how that will happen. And without discussion on boundaries or intimacy, they both assume and are content to ignore an important part of marriage. I did not find it odd that they were not consummating their marriage but I did find it odd that they never gave it any thought.
I find that I enjoy each book in this series more than the last...and since I enjoyed this first quite a bit, that is saying a great deal. This novel was well-written, (in most areas) thoroughly researched, and engaging. I recommend the entire series to readers who enjoy clean, traditional regency romances. My only caveat is that the author seems to have a gap in her knowledge of proper peerage title address. The character of the Earl of Annesbury is properly addressed as Lord Annesbury. He is Lucas Calvert, Lord Annesbury. His title is Annesbury. His name is Calvert. He would not be called Lord Calvert. What makes it even more confusing is that the author correctly calls the Earl's mother Lady Annesbury in this book.
After seeing so many positive reviews from my friends I had to read this one! This is my first book by Ms. Britton and I was pleasantly surprised. It was well written and really captured the regency feel. It was sweet, had likable characters and a good plot. I've always been sucker for a marriage of convenience storyline. I enjoyed the characters of Ellen and Marcus and how their friendship slowly turns in to love. I look forward to going back and reading the other books in the series.ContentRomance: Squeaky cleanLanguage: NoneViolence: NoneReligious: NoneSeries: Branches of Love, Book Three (stands very well on its own)
I love how real the characters feel, and the chemistry between Ellen and Marcus. Society does stir up some drama for the main characters, but nothing is over-the-top or forced. Britton creates a character-driven narrative that makes this an effortless and thoroughly enjoyable read. This is by far my favorite of the series so far.
Love! Love! Love! This was a wonderful love story and I could not put this book down and was up until 2am to finish reading. How refreshing to read a clean, wholesome, romantic, wonderful love story without the graphic sex and religious swear words! You kept wanting to clue Ellen and Marcus into how they felt about each other, but when the did it was lovely. I have loved all of the books in the series so far and I can't wait until "The Earl and His Lady..." about Marcus' brother Lucas Calvert, Earl of Annesbury comes out!
