Review

“There is a great need right now for more positive conversations about Black men in America. Reach is an excellent resource to guide those conversations. The men whose stories are shared in this book make a powerful argument for the value and grace of every human being.” (Archbishop Desmond Tutu)"As Ben Jealous says in his introduction to Reach, 'We cannot imitate that which we have never seen, heard, or read about'—and I am grateful for these powerful stories showing us all the kinds of leaders our Black boys can grow up to be." (Marian Wright Edelman, President, Children's Defense Fund)“Reach is more than a collection of individual stories. At its core it’s a book about choices, about how each one of us has the option to live a life with meaning and purpose.” (Ilyasah Shabazz, author of X: A Novel, Malcolm Little, and Growing Up X)“Energetic and inspiring . . . . This is a moving book that will motivate readers to join these agents of change.” (Publishers Weekly)“Inspiring stories of personal struggle and triumph.” (Booklist)“This book is seriously ground breaking. Not to mention addictive! I couldn't stop reading the essays and was especially taken with D'Wayne's and Yusuf Shakur's journeys of hope. It should be a requisite part of America's English curriculum." (Alisa Swidler, Town & Country)“A serious book of essays . . . . These powerful accounts will prove immensely useful for all readers who want to understand the titular points of living, leading, and succeeding.” (Library Journal)"This bold, illuminating and often surprising collection of first-person narratives is essential to understand the lives of black men in America. It reveals pathways, deeds and dreams that rarely make the news." (David Bornstein, author, How to Change the World)"The leadership that pours out of the pages of Reach is priceless. The lessons, the wisdom, the know-how of these great leaders will touch and transform the present as well as generations to come inspiring them to REACH for so much more." (J. Ivy, poet and author of Dear Father)Reach truly packs a punch . . . . I can definitely see it being a great gift for any young man on his way to high school, college, or post-college life.” (Terri Schlichenmeyer, North Dallas Gazette)

I was introduced to "Reach" by my son's 9th grade counselor who is the founder of BrothersMakingaDifference.org. I still have several stories to read yet what I've read so far is VERY inspirational and confirms that I must do more.I started a book club for my son and his friends in May of 2014. I refer to the Homie Book Club as "Evolving readers excelling towards excellence." The purpose of #HBC was to increase my son's interest in reading AND expose him to more african Americn male role models. This past summer was focused more on community service as they had busy calendars."Reach" will be the first book that the Homies read this school year. Our emphasis is providing the ingredients necessary to successfully navigate high school while preparing for academic/athletic/leadership scholarships. This year the Homies will have Lil Homies to mentor. I'm looking forward to see the Homies grow in leadership.#HomieBookClub

A truly inspiring collection of short bios from men of color, who lead with passion and purpose. To quote one of the 40 men, George Gresham, the “... real power is in the collective.” Reach is a recount of diverse upbringings, darkest moments, mentors who made a difference, and turning points in the lives of these black men. Call it what you will: a calling, a mission to give back, or servant leadership attempting to make a difference in just one person’s life, it is the motivation behind these men of color to live, lead and succeed. From a larger community of difference-makers, these are just 40 who share their life experiences to inspire others.

This is in important collection of black men's stories, very useful for inspiring & training young black men in leadership and overcoming challenges. I bought several, and distributed to community organizers in Central West Baltimore.

The men in this book are impressive to say the least. They represent a wide range of people - celebrities, musicians, teachers, businessmen, pastors, etc - but their stories all have similar themes. Every man has given back. Every man has made tough decisions, and sometimes failed. Every man is confident that he is doing something to make the world a better place.I will be sharing this book with friends of mine who have sons who are looking for role models - white or black.

Wow. The amazing stories on these amazing black men is truly inspiring. I am compelled to keep working hard and surround myself with positive people like a lot of them did. Thanks for the reminder to keep seeing the Good that Black men and boys do. I have already recommended it to a few friends who are reading it now. BRAVO to the minds behind this Trabian Shorters and Ben Jealous. BRAVO!!!

An absolutely inspiring and engaging read. I was amazed at how quickly I read the book. I simply couldn't put it down. This is the type of book that you want to purchase and send to young males in middle and high school, and to all adult males that you know. I have the pleasure of knowing a few of the men in this book and they are true innovators in the field of Black Male achievement and pillars of our communities. These are the types of stories that are not covered in mainstream media by any stretch of the imagination. Finally, true voices from Black men who are doing amazing work in communities all across the nation - who represent countless more Black men who are doing the same - is being told. It's about time!

This book is great and I love to give to some of the other brothers to read and move forward.

This book is full of inspiring stories. A great read on people who have created success in their lives by overcoming obstacles. This is a great gift for teenage males to understand how one can create a life by using their creativity and talents.
