Note: my kid is only like just over two years old, so he's not cutting himself yet. I bought this book as an early Christmas gift because it was under $3 and looked like something we could start working on within the next six months or so. And I figured I should catch it while it's cheap.To be fair, you could probably print all these same activities off Pinterest for free, they are pretty simple. But I love how this doesn't just include cutting lessons, but kind of like an actual craft with cutting and pasting - something my toddler already loves to do. That's something that made this book stand out to me, it isn't just a cutting book. Seriously why aren't there more of these out there?!Anyway, I included some photos of the different activities it has so you can get a feel for it, which as a visual person, is what I count on before buying anything especially book related. You'll notice also the pages are perforated, making for easy removal. So easy in fact I almost tore it just by turning the pages. Has enough activities to keep a preschooler busy for at least a few rainy days if not a week or so, depending on what they do with the activities and how you can spice it up. I'm honestly surprised at how many pages were actually in this book, considering it doesn't feel super substantial. For under $3 this was a great deal.
My four year old loves to cut anything. We bought a few cutting workbooks for her for Christmas. She really enjoyed this book and didn’t need any help with the cutting. My only complaint is the beginning pages had the cut lines start in the middle of the page which was confusing for her. She cruised right through this book and had a lot of fun with it. We really enjoyed Kumon’s cutting book also.
We bought the Preschool Practice Scissors Skills book, and my daughter LOVED it! I loved the math, sequencing, and matching activities, while also helping my daughter gain more scissor skills. So when she completed that book (in almost no time at all), we decided to get this one next. What a disappointment! Maybe if we hadn't had the Preschool Practice book to compare it to, we would have liked it better. Maybe. But even then, I doubt it.If you're looking for just cutting from one side of a paper to the other, it's great. But I could've drawn straight or zigzagged lines on a piece of paper, had her cut along them, and accomplished the same thing. There are very, very few activities in the book. Some pages have you cut the doors and windows and paste them onto the building or cut people and paste them on the bus, but it's mostly just cutting from one side of the paper to the other or cutting out buildings with nothing to paste them to. It's boring. My daughter isn't nearly as engaged as she was with the Preschool Practice book. I'm very disappointed.
My 3-year-old absolutely loves this engaging and attractive book. It is the best cut-and-paste book I have seen. There are some activities that just require cutting (squiggles, zigzags, squares, circle, etc), and some that are cut-and-paste. The pictures are clear, fun, and very colorful. I do feel a LITTLE guilty that she just chops up the book, then it's thrown away, but I justify the waste by recycling….. I highly recommend.
Most of the cuts appear to start in the middle of a page, which means the page has to be folded over rather than start from one end and cut straight through. This is a bit too difficult for a child just learning the hang of his scissors in my opinion. The pages seem kind of redundant, not as creative as other similar products I saw, and the pasting parts are very few and in between. I am using construction paper for him to paste all of the pages as he sees fit. He enjoyed the "story" explaining what was happening in the city on each page, so I am grateful that a vehicle and city-loving boy enjoys the theme of this book. However, I wish I would have gone with another brand.
The pictures are very nice. I like the design, and that's why I bought it initially. Unfortunately, it is not great for kids. Way too many pages deal with straight lines. But the straight line doesn't start at the beginning of the page. You are supposed to cut from the middle of the page to another point that's not touching the rim. The kids were wondering how to even get started. And that's the problem on many pages! It's not well thought through. In the second half it is better, but the level stays very unchallenging even for small kids. And while the pictures are nice, the tasks don't make sense a lot of times, especially for small kids. Also, the paper is very thin and rips easily. My recommendation: Look up Kumon books instead.
It's has been fun cutting and gluing in our household. From 2 to 7 years old. We've been creating. Great activity book!
Great book! My 6 year old son loved it when he was 5. So great I just bought another for my daughter who is now 4 and a half. Like this MUCH better than most cutting books and the kids are actually creating something in this book. Cutting out windows to create a building, putting wheels on a bus, etc. My son followed the work of another reviewer and created a city on his bedroom wall. There are a few of the dopey pages like most books have where you just cut on a line or zig zag, but most of the pages are clever and cute. They will cut all shapes and be an expert by the time they are finished. Look at the Maped spring scissors for cutters having a hard time. They really gave my daughter the confidence she needed to get going at a younger age.
