About the Author

Kevin DeYoung (PhD, University of Leicester) is the senior pastor at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, North Carolina, and assistant professor of systematic theology at Reformed Theological Seminary (Charlotte). He serves as board chairman of the Gospel Coalition and blogs at DeYoung, Restless, and Reformed. He is the author of several books, including Just Do Something; Crazy Busy; and The Biggest Story. Kevin and his wife, Trisha, have eight children.Don Clark is an artist and the cofounder of Invisible Creature, a widely respected and award-winning design studio based in Seattle, Washington. He has worked with clients such as Target, LEGO, WIRED magazine, Nike, Adobe, XBox, The New York Times, and more. I will be honest here (in case it helps anyone else in my situation), my young daughter (8) is a very bright, pint-sized skeptic. She's going through a season of struggling to believe in God and in the whole notion of His existence, noting that it seems like too much of a "fairytale" to be true. I should add that we attend a Bible believing, gospel-centered, thriving church, and speak about our faith constantly to each other and our daughter, read the Bible daily together, and pray together as a family often. We are "THAT" family who never taught our child that Santa was real, or fairies/Easter bunny/etc. were real, for fear that she would not trust us when she was old enough to question whether God was real. I know that seasons of doubt are a natural part of any believer's life on occasion, because our hearts are longing for the proof that what we believe in can be true, even if it does sound too good to be true sometimes.So here's the rub - I previewed this book before giving it to my daughter, and it begins with the line "Once upon a time...." and my heart sank. There's no way I can read this to or give this to my struggling child when it starts out with a line most commonly seen in fairytales. I will say that it is a lovely book - the story is lovely (I didn't find it dark or with an over-arching gloomy tone as some have said), the illustrations are amazing, and it's a very well-crafted book. It's just not right for us. I have ordered other books which are much more helpful for us (Cold Case Christianity for Kids, The Ology: Ancient Truths Ever New), but I was hoping to find one with a beautiful flow of the whole story of the Gospel. I'll keep searching!

This is a children's book for grown-ups. It is a synopsis, or Cliffs Notes, of the whole bible."No child cold possibly grasp the true depth here", was my initial thought upon reading it. Then I remembered the words of Ralph Venning, a Puritan from the 1600's, who wrote about scripture, "It is deep enough for an elephant to swim in, yet shallow enough for a lamb to wade in."Yes! Children can and will wade happily in this book! They will be captured by the illustration, and enjoy reading again the stories they already know. Also, they will come away from it understanding that the bible is one Big Story - not just a collection of little ones.And adults? Reminded here of the amazing power and "God-ness" of God, they may well swim in the biblical sea of sheer grace.Here are a few of my favorite quotes"God kept his promises. He blessed the whole lot of them despite themselves.""God rounded up Moses to deliver his people - but in reality, God did all the work.""People just couldn't get things right. Thankfully, God was still not done saving his people.""It was God's way of saying, "I'll take care of the rescuing. Just trust me.""This time God was going to do everything himself, to make sure Abraham got his blessing.""Our story is the story of God doing what we can't, in order to make up for us doing what we shouldn't.""God kicks his own people out of Paradise and then does whatever it takes to bring them back again.""The Snake Crusher is coming back again to wipe away all the bad guys and wipe away every tear.Truly this is the Best Story ever!

We liked this overall, as it showed the inability of mankind to make himself right with God or do anything pleasing to Him apart from His Son, and the exultation of Christ and His work upon the cross is wonderful. My only reservation is that it seems as though the author says that the people in the OT never really did anything right or that their conduct wasn't pleasing to God. Yes, they fell short of the glory of God. And I agree that humanity is utterly depraved, but the OT saints were true believers and being so were capable (through the Spirit's enabling and working in them to do and to will of His good pleasure) to do things that pleased God. God delighted in His people- Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Moses, etc. While it's equally true that He was very displeased and utterly hated their conduct at times. Maybe I'm wrong in my conclusions, but that's just what came to mind when reading.Overall, would purchase again and balance it with the Jesus storybook Bible. Although I firmly believe that the Bible itself is much more than sufficient for people of all age groups (including children). But that's another subject. :-)UPDATE 2/17/16So I'm going through this storybook bible again and have really changed my mind about it. I think it's very biblically sound and the author DOESN'T make it as though no one ever does anything righteous, or that God doesn't love them etc. He clearly says that the OT saints did do things right, but still fell short of what was needed- perfection and the atoning, cleansing sacrifice of Christ for His people. Would highly recommend this storybook bible! Am very pleased!
