#8,596 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I am giving it three stars because I really think the author writes a solid piece. I like the plot and the character’s super abilities are intriguing. However, I had some issues with the heroin (main character) herself. Sloan (the heroin) had a boyfriend in high school who cheated on her with this girl Shannon. Sloan spread a rumor about Shannon having a disease. (The mature response is to hold the douche bag responsible the girl is irrelevant at that point)So fast forward:Ten some years later. Sloan is still talking a load of bs about Shannon. Phycology 101 : This screams insecurity on the Sloan’s part. It’s not a good look to put down other women. As a matter of fact, I had more respect for Shannon for not saying anything back. Ten years has gone by. Something is not right if you can’t move on.But that’s not it. Sloan (main character) likes Shannon’s boyfriend Nate. But this Warren shows up and she is head over heels for him. instead Sloan tosses Nate aside while constantly berating him about dating Shannon. But then good ol Nate takes care of Sloan (because Warren her boyfriend asked him too) because she was seriously ill. Nate slept next to her while she was ill. (it wasn’t like he was naked in bed with her or pawing at her while she lay ill) But somehow Sloan thought it would be a great idea to tell Warren Nate slept in her bed. I get the whole have two guys fight over a woman thing can be exciting. But when the woman orchestrates the fight, to get two men jealous, then how do I the reader believe the love is even real? It was forced. The heroine is controlling the outcome. There are ways to have two guys fight over a woman without the woman orchestrating the fight. I just found it hard to be on the heroines side because she played a lot of games.

The premise of this book sounded amazing and I was eager to dive in. It started off good but about a quarter of the way through I started to severely dislike two of the MC's - Nathan and Sloan.First, I'm going to say that I knew this was going to be a love triangle going in...and that was ok. What I didn't know was that Nathan was already in a relationship when he met Sloan. I absolutely hate cheating and when Nathan made no qualms about hiding the fact that he was in a relationship (6 months) I figured "ok, so he'll take the protector and defender stance which fits because he is a cop..." Well, thats not exactly what happened. He started omitting things like where he was and who he was with almost immediately. He then started ditching his girlfriend for Sloan. All of this didn't sit right with me. Finally when we meet his girlfriend we find out that she is Sloan's high school nemesis. I think the author tried to use this to get us to feel that Sloan was getting some type of revenge considering Stephanie stole Sloan's boyfriend in high school - side note is that these characters are in their late 20's and they were teens when the boyfriend stealing happened -- additional side note, it takes two to cheat...kids do stupid stuff when at that age and holding onto a grudge for 10 years is extremely childish. I should also note that Stephanie treated Sloan fine upon their re-meeting. She didn't belittle her or talk down to her. She treated her the way an adult would, HOWEVER, Sloan and her best friend repeatedly made fun of Stephanie and made sure to rub it in her face when Nathan and Sloan were spending time together. Furthermore, Nathan didn't do anything to defend or stand up for Stephanie..he just let this happen. Ultimately all this did was leave a bad taste in my mouth for Nathan and Sloan and I felt horrible for Stephanie. As for Sloan's character in the beginning I found her likable. She was sarcastic and witty and came off as a strong character. But due to what I mentioned above by 1/2 the way through the book I found her extremely unlikable and shallow. Her witty comments and dirt slinging became insufferable and totally ruined her character. As if all of that is not enough when Warren entered the picture (2/3rd way through the book) she felt an immediate attraction to him BUT continued to string Nathan along. Yes, I know they were all working together on the case but her and Nathan kissed, kept it a secret, and continued to "be close".For Warren...he was an ok character. Considering how late he entered the story it was hard to get a feel on him except to know that him and Sloan are alike but are opposites. They have a crazy spark between them and suffer horrible migraines when they separate. I found him to be a bit of a push over though consider he knows that Nathan wants Sloan and doesn't really appear to worried about it - yes, they exchange words and threats but ultimately he just lets it go.I hate not completing a series so I went ahead and downloaded the sample of the second book "The Siren" but only made it to the middle of the first chapter. At that point Warren had moved into Sloan's house (uprooted his life to do so I remind you...), they were having smex BUT Sloan was still talking about the fact that Nathan took a bullet for her and that means he must love her - honey, he's a cop...he did it protecting you - and how she just didn't know what to do with that. Dear God...I wanted to strangle the woman and I realized that I really loathed her. What was even worse was that Nathan was still hanging around every day and was STILL with his girlfriend. Nathan had told Sloan that he wanted her BUT was still with Stephanie! I know some people have stated the liked the characters but seriously...how is this guy or Sloan likable? While there is no physical cheating Nathan is emotionally cheating on his girlfriend continually. Sloan knows this helps perpetuate it and ultimately she is cheating on Warren - I consider it cheating because Sloan and Warren are having smex regularly and talk about how they can't be without each other (Hell...she considered moving to another state with him!!). They even refer to each other as bf/gf...THEY ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP!!Last but not least...I know I'm in the minority and I'm not bashing anyone for liking the characters. For me, it just didn't work. Overall the story had great promise but I don't think I could really get into it due to my distaste of Nathan and Sloan. Writing was ok but nothing fancy or enthralling. It was really only the premise that had me interested.

This was amazing!I haven't laughed in such a long time in a murder mystery with a love triangle. Usually those things are beyond intense, and one love interest with bodies falling like flies is enough on a girl, but Sloan's got two and ten.The writing was great with Sloan's POV and her angst about people finding out what she can do felt so realistic, especially with the responses she got. That's why I loved it even more when she handled it like a boss, and took it with a grace that had nothing on her gift of... er, collecting? It's so important for me to get into a book, and I fell right through, reading til my eyelids gave out and finishing up as soon as I woke up. It was that good. The murder mystery was interesting with all the different characters coming and going, but I loved the connection between Sloan and Warren. So much going on with that; I love how smoothly it was delivered. Not once was I nervous about their relationship, and I definitely didn't have any bad feelings when she was with Nathan. If you can create a (and I use this word lightly) multiple relationship among two guys and still make it all work harmoniously and stuff, you are a writing deity. On top of the murder and sexy men, I also enjoyed seeing Sloan's struggles with wanting a normal life she worked hard for and doing what was right. At times I got annoyed (just once, I swear) but her best friend, Adrienne, was right there to clear it all up for her (Bless you, Adrienne). The characters were all adorable with enough presence to move the story along and bring the story itself out of the love-triangle situation and back into the case. Nathan and Warren were so genuine that I honestly had a hard time choosing one in the beginning. This story is filled with so many awesome things, a mystery with a creepy set of guys to point fingers at, a party-hardy best friend, hot guys who mean well, love, and the type of fear that one's brain can only attempt to put a face to if it means sleeping a little better at night... or not.A seriously definite recommend. You'll be missing out on thrills and laughs.

I highly recommend this book to anyone involved with UX strategy, whether you are the strategist or simply working in a field that requires UX strategy.I've been searching for a book that clearly outlines the process from start to finish for validating a business idea, and this book does exactly that. It explains how to take an idea from concept to either kill, pivot, or execution, which makes for an easy-to-follow approach to UX strategy. The first time through the book, I highlighted and bookmarked pages; the second time through I will use it as a guide with my next client; and each time thereafter I will use it as a reference. This book will never see Goodwill; it will be a definite go-to in my library. What I particularly liked about this book is that is truly all anyone needs to get started. Jaime does an excellent job explaining her process, which she's used for over 20 years, which therein lies a lot of value. Where else can you find such a treasure trove of helpful information? Without this book, I would be spending a lot more time troubleshooting the process. Why reinvent the wheel when this book is available to you?

As a long time product manager in both startups and big corporate companies I can truly say that UX strategy is one of my favorite UX books. It highlights the most important tactics and practices in an overwhelmingly congested domain of UX, business, and product design strategies. The book is very well written with a straight to the point writing style and a wide variety of examples that helps readers see how the UX concepts are implemented in real life. I appreciated the chapters’ opening stories and their lesson learned paragraphs that served as a great introduction to every topic. The true added value of this UX strategy book is that you can equally learn from it whether you are looking to learning the overall concepts of UX, product and business strategy or if you’re looking for a step by step manual for implementing a UX strategy project effectively. Conclusion: Must read for all product, business, and UX professionals out there.

Terms can be slippery in the digital design world; when I bought this book, I thought it would be focused on how to plan new features and create product roadmaps. It does talk about those, but it mainly covers what you need to do *before* designing... is there a market for your product? Who are the users? What do they need? How can you quickly prototype your ideas and get them in front of users? This book contains powerful, well-known methods for building great products in a readable format. At it's core, this is a book about *Product* Strategy. I think the ideas here could apply to nearly any kind of product / service you want to build.

Levy's UX Strategy aims to be a distillation of a number of books one might find in an MBA classroom. The one that is most frequently cited is The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Despite the lengthy sections on business and entrepreneurial theory, I think the book has a good amount to offer regarding its namesake, UX Strategy. I would have liked to see a bit more about the actual mechanics of web design for conversion and the like, but the amount offered is a good primer for a beginner.

Before reading this book, I had no clue what UX strategy was. Even the words scared me! This book debunked all of my questions and the mysteries behind UX for me. Jaimie Levy does an exceptional job setting a framework and detailing everything from guerilla research to heuristics evaluations. Whether you know nothing or (think) you know everything about UX strategy, I highly suggest reading this book. The affordability of a book this rich is shocking. Without a doubt, buy it now and begin this UX strategy journey!

User experience design for newcomers can be a bit overwhelming because it involves so many principles, add to that the field is growing and changing. This book was helpful in that it provides real examples and the outcomes. As a newcomer to the UX field, this book doesn't inundate you with jargon, explains everything clearly, and provides links to other books and resources that can better introduce you to the field. Today we are solving problems that did not exist 10 years ago on digital platforms and this book will definitely help guide the first important steps of the process.

This book literally changed my life and has given me an opportunity to grow my learning in so many ways. I have a clear understanding on what it takes to iterate on digital product ideas and ultimately provide value to startups (who court my services). The 4 tenets are a regular part of my professional vernacular and I can now verbalize and present ideas in specific and meaningful ways to businesses who often undervalue UX. Thanks again for contributing this piece to the world Jaime!

Levy's book is absolutely an essential read for anyone involved in the UX field. Whether you are just starting out a career in UX or well along in a UX career but looking to refresh your knowledge or looking for more strategy-focused UX readings, I highly recommend this book. It's written in a conversational tone which makes it fun and easy to read, but still packs in a ton of useful information. Even if you're not in UX but work in a related field like marketing or graphic design, there are some great takeaways in this book.

How To Be Gay, by David M. Halperin

Review

“How To Be Gay is…written by a gifted thinker and writer who has come to see that there is not just a political and sexual gay culture (its foundational event the rioting outside the Stonewall Inn in 1969), based on gay identity rather than sensibility, but also a nonsexual gay culture, based on modes of feeling and expressive artifacts.”―Adam Mars-Jones, London Review of Books“[Halperin] provocatively argues that when it comes to defining what it means to be a homosexual man, sex is overrated… Culture matters more… [How To Be Gay] is never a bore… [It] explores a fundamental kind of gay sensibility… Halperin teases an enormous amount out of [a] scene [in Mildred Pierce], including the sense of ‘glamour and abjection’ gay audiences find in [Joan] Crawford, and how the film packages the ‘transgressive spectacle of female strength, autonomy, feistiness and power.’ …Halperin works up to an argument (impossible to summarize here) about how the film evokes a ‘dissident perspective’ on the very idea of romantic love. He is articulate about many other things in this book, including how gay men often find more resonance in straight cultural artifacts than in gay ones. His funny shorthand for this is: ‘Why would we want Edmund White, when we still have The Golden Girls?’ …He is excellent, too, on how classical tragedy is nearly always about men, or fathers and sons… Dozens of similar arguments are rehearsed in How To Be Gay. Halperin even neatly mows down hipster irony in the face of the kind of gay male irony that defines camp. It’s a kaleidoscopic book that at its base breaks with what the author calls ‘the Brokeback Mountain crowd.’ He urges gay men to take their so-called femininity out of ‘homosexuality’s newly built closet,’ to see it plainly and to give it affirmative interpretations.”―Dwight Garner, New York Times“How To Be Gay celebrat[es] the sharp-elbowed camp culture that many now consider obsolete… How can someone be gay without having seen Mildred Pierce or The Wizard of Oz? To answer that, you first have to know what such movies have to do with being gay. Halperin observes, as others have before him, that gay boys often display stereotypical tastes long before sex enters the picture. As he points out, sexuality is the area where gay men differ least from straight men… Gay taste is something more singular, probably linked to incipient feelings of dissimilarity from one’s peers… Halperin is right to defend the old rituals and the lingo and body language that go with them… So long live camp, and all the other cultural pursuits that gay people have traditionally embraced. Perhaps the historic devotion to theatre, opera, high fashion, and other venerable disciplines will wither away, but it seems likely that many gay kids will still feel the trauma of difference and go on seeking refuge in artier spheres. Halperin speaks of a ‘tension between egalitarian ethics and hierarchical aesthetics’ in gay taste; he sees it as a snobbery not of class but of knowledge, open to all who can hold their own. It stands in opposition to a society that joins egalitarian aesthetics―the notion that the perfect cultural product appeals to all―to an economic system whose inequalities become more glaring by the day. Gay culture’s long memory, its arch sympathy for fading worlds, is a check against the razing of the past.”―Alex Ross, New Yorker“[A] provocatively titled critical cri de coeur… To summarize Halperin’s ambitious book is tricky, but think of it as an exploration of the tension between the official Pride Parade, celebrating post-Stonewall gay identity, and the Drag March, celebrating pre-liberation gay culture… Halperin is at his best when critiquing the current assimilationist model of gay-rights activism, with its denial of any cultural interests or aesthetic points-of-view that hint of femininity or campiness or of the ‘stereotypically gay.’ His cultural history of how this attitude emerged in the 1970s will be surprising to those who view the gay-rights movement as a consistently positive progression; Halperin argues convincingly that as butch masculine styles became ever more mandatory, both for attracting sexual/romantic partners (no femmes, no fats!) as well as earning political credibility, the push toward conformity lead to the ‘euthanasia of traditional gay male culture.’ …How To Be Gay is intellectually rigorous [and] entertaining… Halperin demonstrates that those gays who do still identify with Bette and Joan, drag and drapes, Auntie Mame and Annie Lennox have something important to contribute to our ever more homogenous world.”―J. Bryan Lowder, Slate“Halperin rejoices in the growing acceptance of homosexuality in mainstream society, although he’s quick to point out that homophobia is still potent. He doesn’t want gay culture to be lost as assimilation increases. It’s a legitimate concern, and he makes his case forcefully.”―Tavo Amador, Bay Area Reporter“How To Be Gay engages many of the foundational questions―and dogmas―of queer studies… What, Halperin wants to know, is gay culture? …Halperin is plying his own twist on the familiar idea that by aligning themselves with certain forms―flamboyance, abject glamour, exaggerated femininity―gay men implicitly challenge the uptight codes of a patriarchal culture… Gay culture, for Halperin, isn’t really attached to any given person’s experience; rather, it’s a set of tactics, adopted behaviors, and strategies imbricated in a much larger social field… Frivolity, irony, superficiality, inauthenticity, flamboyance, snobbishness, exquisite taste: How To Be Gay works hard to unpack the stereotypical characteristics of gay male culture and succeeds in demonstrating how the taint of pathology and the rise of a post-Stonewall ethos of hypermasculine self-determination conspire to shut down a frank inquiry into the persistence of such ‘faggy’ traits.”―Nathan Lee, Bookforum“David M. Halperin has written a monumental work… In detail, the book explores the emotional and personalized subjectivity in describing what is at the core of gay culture and the innermost feelings of what it is to be ‘gay.’ …It is Halperin’s intent to create a serious dialogue, though there are many smiles to be had at the same time, while absorbing the process. How To Be Gay is both enlightening and refreshing in the personal discovery of self or for lack of a better phrase, the perfect way to understand the how, what, where and why ‘to turn your inner-gay on.’”―Bill Biss, Edge“How To Be Gay is not an instruction manual, nor is it a ‘learning to love yourself’ self-help guide. Rather, Halperin’s book is an intervention against those who trumpet the ‘death of gay culture’ (which he argues has been declared for over 40 years now) now that widening tolerance and greater visibility of gays in the media should make Judy Garland, show tunes, and drag queens obsolete… Halperin’s fresh re-evaluation of the theory and practice of camp is one of his most fascinating insights… Halperin makes a case for camp as politically subversive and a case study for the complicated structure of gay identification… One gets the sense that Halperin anticipates his greatest detractors to not be social conservatives (though he has been their pariah in the past), but instead to be other gay men who fear the essentialism of acknowledging the role a distinct gay culture plays in shaping gay identity… Halperin narrates the history of this masculine reaction against gay culture, culling from his own memories in the ’70s of how newly ‘liberated’ gay men appropriated the machismo of biker culture, mustaches, and construction worker clothing to combat the stereotype of the pathetic queens and fairies of the previous generation. This is a valuable history lesson to readers from subsequent generations given that these signifiers of ’70s gay masculinity are now considered in the campy light of The Village People, and thus part of the gay culture from which today’s champions of machismo and normality try to distance their selves. How To Be Gay deserves a wide audience beyond academia, especially among today’s youth generation who come out in a climate more accepting of same-sex coupling, but still very much phobic and censorious of gay culture.”―Chase Dimock, Lambda Literary Review“How To Be Gay makes for as fun a viewing companion [to Mildred Pierce and Mommie Dearest] as it does a rigorously intelligent read… Whether you’re well-versed in all things gay or tend to avoid pop divas at all costs, How To Be Gay offers a fresh perspective on what we call gay culture, why so many of us love what we love and why we’re afraid to talk about it. Thankfully, as Halperin notes in his conclusion, gay male culture isn’t going anywhere―as long as there’s a straight culture to appropriate for our own ends.”―Jameson Fitzpatrick, Next Magazine“[A] weighty, thought-provoking tome… Halperin explores notions of gay male identity and stereotypes, wondering what has shaped gay behavior and whether it’s a reaction against the hetero-normative society into which we’re born.”―Out in the City

Admittedly, there is quite a lot of repetition in this very thick book. But if you can overlook that (or simply fast forward every now and then) you will be rewarded with many thought provoking observations. For me, personally, a direct result of reading this book was to embrace to 'camp' and 'gay' side of my personality more, instead of trying to look/appear 'normal' and 'fit in' with the rest of society. Because, as Halperine describes, just wanting to be 'normal' throws away the unique gift that is given to many gay people. His account of a lesbian activist who wants to get married to her girlfriend, only so she can dress up for the wedding like everyone else and enjoy the normal joys of run-of-the-mill-heteros, was truly shocking. (Is that what the LGBT community is fighting for: boring normality?) You certainly come out of reading this book wanting to watch your old Joan Crwaford movies again! Instead of being ashamed of liking such films, Broadway musicals etc., one should celebrate the fact that different things speak to gay men, or men with a gay sensitity (which heteors can also have). Hughly enjoyable, on the whole.

I'd love to have had a course like this in my 20's - level-headed, amusing, detailed without being overly academic or polemical - a great handbook for may one wondering what it's like to be gay -

Really an excellent view on how it is to grow up in a heter normative environment regardless of how that environment view homosexuality. Also how we gays re-interpret straight representations. However, too much emphasis on 2 movies.

This reminds us that oh' yeah we need this culture, that provides: artists, hairdressers, fashion designers, film producers, novelists, and architects, just to mention a few of the trades heavily relied upon by every other culture. This is an important form of education.

I did...both want to like, as well as like much of it.I wanted, needed a respite from a parade of dry doctoral theses..."How to Be Gay" Ta-da! Sounds like fun, no? Well, it did to me. Here was that respite the doctorates ordered! Buff bums parading in rows across a brilliant, drag-show-feather-boa-pink cover. How gay is that? Hold onto your seat...bumpy night ahead! And, we're off like a prom dress!Clearly tongue-in-cheek...its cheekiness dripping with irony, humor, wit! Could any culture be more adept than the gay community at parading irony in even the most sorrowful experience? (cue the Fire Island Italian widows), exaggerated humor in the most mundane? ("Mom, please pass the peas to the homosexual at the table."), the entertainment value of curtain rod shoulder pads (Carol Burnett, ready for her close-up!), the biting wit in social observation? Coward? Wilde? Crisp?Irony? Humor? Wit? Not here in the telling.OK, so the book is soooo mistitled. Titles sell books. It sold mine. But prepare for a doctoral thesis. OK, still valid, if perhaps a cover, misjudged. With proffered humility, Halperin risks a tightrope walk into analysis of gay culture. Is there a community more possessive of its identity or more resistant to or resentful of categorization? Nevertheless, Halperin walks that rope confidently, often convincingly, occasionally tripping, but I believe there is a very good, 300 page book somewhere in this 500 page jumble.I shall not enter into argument of Focault's early work, later work, Freud's contributions, Freud's miss-analyses, etc.. I'll leave that to White and other better minds than mine, though reasonably well-read on the subject of gay culture. What I will claim is frequent reminder of undergraduate professors who droned. Student, awaking from a mid-lecture doze, finds professor right where he was when he nodded.Damn, man. Where is the editor who perhaps could not inject jocularity, sass, or clever turn of phrase, but at least recognition and reflection of the culture's in the text? Who could do some organizing of this closet, sans wire coat hangers? Arbitrary "divisions" do nothing here to clarify whatever point is being made in the mini-chapters. Mired in "Mildred Pierce" and "Mommy Dearest," Halperin's frequently valid hypotheses are stifled by unfortunate repetition. Again. And again.Reader: definitely use a bookmark...otherwise, one would be hard-pressed to follow logical progression in this tome. I couldn't.That said, I did find this a worthwhile read (if "sloggy," as one review here termed it), in spite of what I, and some others, feel are its shortcomings. The author's conclusions offer much to engender discourse and argument.Halperin himself contends that drag is a democratic art form, approachable by all without hierarchical snobbery. It is performance art (in contrast to cross-dressing), audience being an existential element, and with constituent goal if not of fun, surely of entertainment. Would that the democratic entertainment suggested by the cover had been found inside. What a delightful time we could have had!

Autumn, by Karl Ove Knausgaard

Review

“Knausgaard’s art can still seem a kind of magic. How does he take the plainest things, in the plainest language, and make them feel so alive?…The days, the months, the hovering presence of the daughter-to-be, charge the objects they delimit with a mortal urgency…Day by day, radiantly, the mission succeeds. For even the familiarity and foreignness that box us in, or out, will bend to a sovereign art. . . for a little while, if only in the mind, we get to have our apple and eat it too.”—New York Times Book Review “Simone Weil wrote that ‘attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer’ — and so it is here. Loose teeth, chewing gum, it all becomes noble, almost holy, under Knausgaard’s patient, admiring gaze. The world feels repainted…This book is full of wonders.” —The New York Times“VERDICT- This is a more accessible entry point to Knausgaard than his series of autobiographical novels (My Struggle), which is a boon for newcomers. For those familiar with his earlier work, by focusing on the world outside himself, he remains fresh and oftentimes surprising.” —Library Journal“Stuck in line? Turn to page 123. Read the two-page (1 minute, 45 seconds) chapter, “Infants,” on what is arguably life’s greatest joy. Looking up, you’ll love that you’re in the holiday crush. Well, no. But it’s a damn fine reverie.” — Men’s Health“Karl Ove Knausgaard frames aging here as a kind of descent into Buddhism: the mindful enlightenment of marinating in the now. His new book is, accordingly, a series of short meditations on everyday things like plastic bags, frogs and war. (‘War is both the simple shape of the arrowhead and the complicated life that it annihilates.’) I happened to turn 40 last week, and Knausgaard’s claim rings true for me.”— New York Times Magazine“It’s a sentimental week for parent readers. Fans of Karl Ove Knausgaard’s sprawling and often dark six-volume autobiographical novel, ‘My Struggle,’ might be surprised to find the author showing his short-and-sweet side in ‘Autumn,’ a slender book of essays about the material world addressed to his daughter.” — New York Times, 10 Books We Recommend This Week“In these secular meditations, Knausgaard scratches away at the ordinary to reach the sublime — finding what’s in the picture, and what’s hidden.” —Washington Post “For all his rapturous passages of ecstasy and agony, Karl Ove Knausgaard can also make you laugh … Autumn glows.” — The Economist “Even more than in “My Struggle,” he seems to inhabit every age simultaneously: He is boy, adolescent, and father at once…. If hard truths insist on hiding in the deep, these essays suggest, a hand-line will do as well as a drift net to haul them in.”—The Boston Globe“In his new book, Autumn, the first in a seasonal quartet, Knausgaard casts his gaze outward, crafting a lyrical collage of mini essays and letters to his unborn daughter.” — O Magazine “The most surprising thing about Autumn, the latest book from Norwegian literary superstar Karl Ove Knausgaard, is how tender it is. . . The spirit of that love animates this gentle, thoughtful book: love both for Knausgaard’s unborn daughter and for finding elements of the transcendent in the mundane. It’s tender, intimate, and lovely.”— Vox“The joys of one of the world’s great living writers distilled.”— GQ.com“With a Nordic half-wink of self-parody. No one dotes on details like Knausgaard.”— Vulture.com“Knausgaard is an acute, sometimes squirmingly honest analyst of domesticity and his relationship to his family. . ....he figures it out with the sharp radiance that is his gift.” —Newsweek “Knausgaard can take the breath away, his compressed vignettes delivering the same emotional charge as longer sequences from his previous work. . . this first volume of the Seasons Quartet quietly illuminates Knausgaard’s profound gift for making the reader see the world in fresh and unpredictable ways.”—The Guardian "Summer ends with one of the sweetest reading surprises of the year…unexpected, tender, intense, and persuasive…I encourage you to spend your autumn reading it."” —The Philadelphia Inquirer“Knausgaard covers fingers, bottles, infants, badgers, cars, loneliness, experience, lice, oil tankers, flies, vomit, dawn and much more, offering both humour and unpredictable logic. . . This book is important as it lays bare the endless sources of inspiration for one of the world’s most successful writers of fiction. Reading this book is a tour through the fecund mind of Knausgaard.” —Open the Magazine “Yes, this guy writes a ton. His massive, multivolume autobiography My Struggle is regarded as variously notorious or brilliant. But what a sweet, surprising, short collection of essays this is! Lie on the beach, sun beating down, and read about the season to come.” —Philadelphia Tribune “The great pleasure of “Autumn” is in watching how Knausgaard starts in commonplace observations — ‘of all the things we do, pissing is one of the most routine’ — but then moves unexpectedly toward surprising conclusions. . . I’ll look forward to “Winter,” “Spring” and “Summer.” —San Francisco Chronicle “For those seeking. . . a moment of contemplative peace, the Norwegian writer Karl Ove Knausgaard’s new book will help…Knausgaard admires Madame Bovary above all other novels, saying Flaubert’s sentences ‘are like a rag rubbed across a windowpane encrusted with smoke and dirt which you have long since grown accustomed to seeing the world through.’ Autumn performs the same task.” —Toronto Star“This is not Knausgaard-lite; in crisp, imaginative bits of prose, he shakes up complacency and invites us to look again — no bromides here. The overriding dichotomy is that the year is dying out and, at the same time, a baby is growing in utero and reaching out her little hand… By writing about his family and their year of seasons, Knausgaard rescues them from the invisible pack.” – The Post and Courier“What truly unites these pieces is Knausgaard's sensibility, which is one part Montaigne (an urge to address big issues), one part Nicholson Baker (an eye for picayune detail), and one part Annie Dillard (an admiration for nature and an elegant prose style)… A call to pay closer attention to the routine stuff in our lives and to allow ourselves to be thunderstruck by their beauty.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred)“Novelist Knausgaard (My Struggle) eloquently expresses the delights, rewards, and insights of looking closely in this, the first of a projected quartet of autobiographical volumes based on the four seasons. …His writing encourages the reader to see the connections between quotidian things and the bigger picture and to appreciate both continuity and change. Autumn hums in the background as apple trees flourish and days get darker, and one looks forward to what associations he will uncover in the remaining seasons of the year.” —Publishers Weekly“Knausgaard has a gift for making the quotidian seem compelling. . . .Whether he’s writing about a rainstorm (“the sound of thunder always heightens the sense of being alive”) or teeth (“miniature white towers in the mouth”), the scrutiny Knausgaard applies to everyday objects renews them for the reader.”—Bookpage ”I got through book two of My Struggle, which became my insomnia go-to; Karl Ove Knausgaard’s account of becoming a father and at the same time a writer I found deeply affecting, especially as these bolts of bliss burst through his usual overcast of melancholy. I also loved Autumn, his book of short essays about the eruptions of wonder in everyday life. What’s great about liking Knausgaard is you can be sure there’s always more where that came from.” — Michael Pollan

Like so many others, I am a huge fan of the "My Struggle" series, and recommend it to almost everyone I know who likes books. However, quite a few of my reading friends don't get what is so great about a middle-aged man writing about his life for thousands of pages in extraordinary detail. I guess either you feel the hypnotic pull of those thousands of pages, or you don't, but it is really difficult to explain why the pull is there. In "Autumn", you can feel what is so hypnotic about Knausgaard in just a few pages. This book, written to his unborn daughter, is a series of Knausgaard's thoughts on several dozen topics, ranging from badgers to pain to tin cans to toilet bowls (and many other things). Each one is only a few pages, and ever single one of them will make you think "Ahhh, that's so true! I know exactly what he is saying, but I never thought about saying it that way!". It really is quite remarkable. This may be a good book for someone who is thinking about tackling the "My Struggle" series, but just wants to get a little taste of what makes Knausgaard's writing so great. If you don't have a few "ahhh" moments, I will personally come to your house and prepare for you a cheese sandwich.

This is an extraordinary book about extraordinarily ordinary things. In a series of letters written to his unborn daughter this talented Norwegian author, Karl Ove Knausgaard, insightfully chronicles an inventory of life’s most ordinary events and things, from buttons and chewing gum, to vomit and oil slicks. He writes, “That is why I am writing this book for you. I want to show you the world, as it is, all around us, all the time. Only by doing so will I myself be able to glimpse it.” He notes, “These astounding things, which you will soon encounter and see for yourself, are so easy to lose sight of, and there are almost as many ways of doing that as there are people.”One typically astounding but ordinary thing is the common housefly. He notes that it has compound eyes and its taste cells are distributed over its entire body. “Taken together, these two faculties must fragment their world immensely, for if the reflection of a room is picked up by their whole head, then their attention must be directed outwards to such a degree that to flies there can hardly be any difference between themselves and the room they are in…”What is perhaps most extraordinary is that he describes it all with only the tools of the ordinary. The language is simple and functional, carefully avoiding the typical jargon and buzzwords of contemporary philosophy, spirituality, and introspection. The introspection, in fact, is highly extrospective. The words are not mere descriptions. They are launching pads for greater examination. Which is why the book demands not to be read, but savored. And why, I suspect, it is a book that will never quite close despite having arrived at the last paragraph. The content is, in a way, minimalistic, but in its minimalism there is the suggestion of so much more. He paints a delightful gallery of pictures without frames, where one picture moves freely on to the next, creating a total impression so much greater than the sum of the parts.I don’t mean to make the book sound poetic. It isn’t. It provides the reader, however, with the same sense I suspect the most ardent fan of poetry must feel after discovering an unimagined and unanticipated treasure. This book, I feel, will impact me for a long time to come because it is that rare work of artistic interpretation that connects you with the people you’ve never noticed, the things you see ever day but never really considered, and the ordinary self that seeks to find meaning in life but which itself is often taken for granted.

There's sweetness, innocence, and a measure of deep thought all wrapped into one in this book. Knowing that it is in many ways written for his unborn daughter, Knausgaard is able to match a level of revelation a child would understand or need about everyday items (a bed, a toothbrush) with more mature revelations. Sometimes these stories conflict (like contradicting in separate essays the colors of the body) yet still permitting the reader to see so many things anew. I saw him speak about the book and one particular comment resonated quite strongly. Knausgaard said that simply talking about the items in this book would never uncover such keen observations; only writing about them can do that. He's right. And we benefit from this reality in his book.

I really enjoyed these bite-sized essays, reading a couple every night before bed. Subjects really run the gamut. Knausgaard makes observations of everyday life, then makes an association with deep insight. "Autumn Leaves" was a particular favorite. After enjoying the NYT magazine story about Knausgaard searching for Vikings in North America, I bought this book immediately. Knausgaard's style may not suit everyone, but I find it poetic. Kudos to the translator.

That Rascal KnausgaardIt amazes methat even critics rush to denythe power of your wordswhen clearly there is no escapethey try, they dive off the page butwith eyes tight shutyou are raw, the world is rawin your mouthI don't have to bite downhard to find itmy heart is bitten in twoyet I rejoice!Reading you reminds meof trying to writea poem about a wild animalafter The Tygerthere has never been a good poemabout a wild animalthat isn't merely thefeeling of being trapped in our human obsessionsthere is an ecstasyin say a wild hawk that our languagemissesas there is ecstasy in your visionsthat we have to tear out our ordinary eyesto see.

Knausgaard manages to convey the torment, pleasure, confidences and insecurities of a lot of the above referenced demographic in an artful and truthful way. I can’t explain it but I found this comfort reading him even when he makes me uncomfortable.

There is something hypnotic about Knausgaard's writing, even when he is musing on material that is less than savory. In this, the first of a seasonal quartet framed as a letter to his unborn daughter, his thoughts range from the mundane nature of buttons (thus elevating them) to creatures of the natural world and their significance. There doesn't seem to be a pattern here, just some lovely snips.

I subscribed to Nat Geo's travel magazine years ago and was not impressed. When researching a trip to Morocco I decided to try their guidebook because of the favorable reviews. I am very glad I did. The photography was, of course, amazing! It helped me decide upon our itinerary with thorough descriptions of the cities/regions. The really big perk that I did not expect was the walking tours. They were insightful relative to the culture (food, music and atmosphere), architecture and natural beauty. I will use Nat Geo's guides again.

This book provides you with basic information to get in and around Morocco. I wouldn't say it does a great job giving you an in depth peak inside the country, in fact (like many guide books) it can romanticize a place rather than give an accurate account, but it provided me with helpful tips to plan my vacation.

Great book to get information about what you are going to see and experience if/when traveling in Morocco. Also useful after returning so you can reconstruct the places you have visited (and forgotten some details already).

Beautiful quality, pictures and very helpful information.

when I get back from Morocco in October I will know more about how good the book is

This is very helpful!!!

lovely

First Amazon review, but I"m annoyed enough with the book, namely the maps that I feel inclined to write a review. Planning a 2 week trip to Morocco in the spring, and I plan on traveling throughout the country. While the information is pretty detailed for each of the destinations, it's very frustrating that the destinations aren't listed or included on the Northern/Southern maps. I find that I'm constantly plugging in things online to map out the itinerary. Erg Chebbi or Merzouga, which is definitely up there in Top 10 experiences in Morocco aren't on the primary maps.
