Addison Stone takes the art world by storm with her hanging drawings and magnetic personality. Her death is a tragedy of unfulfilled talent leaving behind friends, family, fans and detractors. But who was she? Writer Adele Griffin inserts herself into the story as biographer of the fictional character, attempting to discover what made and unmade the teenager through a series of interviews with those who knew Addison best.I love a fresh or unconventional take on storytelling and Griffin does just that with THE UNFINISHED LIFE OF ADDISON STONE. She includes photos, drawings, newspaper articles to help tell Addison's story. Unfortunately, Kindle doesn't do the best job depicting images, and I gave up trying to read the newspaper articles because I couldn't expand the words to read them more clearly. I wish I could have also enlarged the drawings and photos. I didn't let formatting effect my review, because that's not Griffin's fault. The aspect of the images I do fault is the quality of the drawings. Addison was supposed to be this once-in-a-lifetime artist, but the drawings looked amateurish and not at all deep or haunting.From the way others described Addison, she seemed quite unlikable, even as a child. Of course, mental illness could have contributed to her self indulgence and narcissism. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, she seemed more schizoaffective to me, with her mood swings, which is ironic because another character was schizoaffective. Addison Stone was a tragic character due to bad parenting, mental illness and being treated special because of her talents. She used people and people used her.THE UNFINISHED LIFE OF ADDISON STONE shows the versatility of Griffin as a storyteller. If you're looking for a different type reading experience you'll enjoy this.

This is one of those books that's on your "To Read" list for the longest time and when you finally get to it you have no idea why in the world you waited so long to read it.This is a fictional account of a prodigy who died young and left behind questions of how she truly died along with questions of who she really was. Gifted. Troubled. Both in more ways than one. I loved, loved, loved the story just as much as I loved all of the characters and hearing straight from the people who knew Addison talk about their memories of Addison - both the good and the bad and the gray. As well as the good and the bad of each other while in Addison's world. Because most everyone's lives revolved around this girl.The story is told in the form of interviews that a journalist has gathered for a biography of Addison Stone, including a few excerpts of interviews Addison once conducted and much of Addison's art. Photos of Addison and those close to her are also intertwined and it's just so fascinating and mesmerizing seeing how much this fictional world and these fictional characters have been brought to life. The way that this story is told is so masterful and when you see it, when you experience this greatness, you'll see exactly what I mean.Addison Stone is a gifted artist haunted by ghosts, burdened by her mental illness, and freed by art. This story means so much to me and I can't even begin to express how happy it makes me to know that this book exists, to know that it's constantly getting into the right readers' hands. This book is absolutely fantastic and is easily one of my favorite reads of the year - and the first month of the year hasn't even come to an end. This book is a true work of art and this piece is one I'll never forget.

This book is written in such a way that you will believe this is a true story. You will be absorbed into Addison's world. You will miss her when you are finished with it. I really loved this book and am recommending it to everyone. I will re-read it several times.

I thought that the multi-genre format of the book was a great idea. Griffin did a good job of keeping characters who were significant in Addison's life from being too one-dimensional, even if we didn't hear from them often. I felt that the inclusion of the mysterious woman from the past was too much of a side story, since Addison's life was interesting enough without her. I don't think the book suffered from it, but also don't think it would have suffered without it.

The format of this book is what makes it very interesting. I must say I have never read anything like this! I found all the different character's perspectives very interesting. Had it not been for this, I probably would have quit reading this book halfway through. I also thought it was interesting that the author addressed mental illness (through the main character, Addison). I found it interesting to read about that struggle in a main character. Overall definitely different but not my favorite.

Purchased for a high school library - I'm sure the kids will enjoy!

Book was ok more like a set of interviews which was disconcerting to read. It was ok though, the story intriguing.

If you're simply looking for an easy read to help you write up your own plan with a minimum of deeper thinking, this isn't the book for you. It is very detailed & will stretch the average, interested reader to grasp & distill its wisdom. While I loved this depth, I found myself wishing the authors had also included summaries of key points with each section, or provided a more step-by-step structure to the book alongside what they wrote. Even being a motivated & experienced runner, it was easy to miss the proverbial forest for the trees.Definitely not a book for beginners or those without much running experience... but for advanced runners & competitive athletes, this is a smorgasbord of knowledge & hard-won wisdom for building a running program to make you FAST. In regard to the latter audience, I give this book my highest recommendations!

Hudson (the book seems to be written entirely in Hudson's first-person voice) seems to have a lot of experience coaching elite runners, and particularly elite runners with chronic nagging injury issues. His plans are built around nonlinear periodization, with a focus on as-you-go adjustments based on feel ("adaptive running"). The book is well written and mostly succinct.I don't think this is a great choice for a beginner, unless you're experienced with high-level competitive training from another sport. He tries to accommodate all levels, but his experience is clearly with elites, and his approach reflects that. For example, in one paragraph, he has a random example of a goal--the actual goal time and distance is incidental to his point--and he uses a 37:00 10k. That's quite a bit quicker than most Amazon shoppers will ever run a 10k, myself included. This is probably not the best book to get you from a 5-hour marathon down to a 4-hour marathon.Hudson also emphasizes max-effort hill sprints for strength training and injury prevention--probably not a great approach for beginners fresh off the couch, without a long background of aerobic training.The book places equal emphasis on all "long" distance events--5k, 10k, half, marathon--which is a real plus if you are serious about a distance other than the marathon.I'm a 43-year-old wanna-be getting back into running, and have never run an organized 5k outside of a triathlon. My theoretical PR, from a decade ago, is around 23 minutes. I'm hoping to break 20 minutes with this book.

It's complex and, if you don't just follow the pre-written plans outlined (and Hudson/Fitzgerald admit these are just sample plans), the method requires you put a lot of thought and planning into plotting out your schedule and buildup.Good things:- It specifies a given set of concerns to consider when planning a run, such as your current mileage, what you struggle with, and what workouts or approach can help address your weaknesses.- It points out several keys to successful progress (speedwork, neuromuscular strength, aerobic endurance) and emphasizes building a plan that will improve all of the above.- If you read it cover to cover you'll definitely have a good framework for building your own training plans, and training plans for others.- If all else fails and you just want a plan to follow, this book has several, and it explains in detail the logic of why they (and other solid training plans) set up the way they are.Issues:- While they permit you to vary the mileage and number of days per week, they insist on a particular timing and order of exercises, such as always doing a long run followed by hill work followed by tempo work, then two easy days before tempo work. They insist that this is the best approach and should usually be followed in this order, which doesn't lend itself to adapting to a given runner's schedule needs, especially if they run with a group that does certain runs on certain days of the week.- They plot runs by flat distance and give little consideration to a runner's pace or their current endurance.- The also rely on very general terms like 'easy run' and 'moderate pace'. That can mean a wide variety of things, and if a runner has issues with how they approach the pacing or intensity of these runs, this will not address that.- It's heavy on self promotion, featuring multiple "look at how awesome of a coach I am" stories about runners Hudson has coached. It doesn't help that one story is about a runner who quickly quit on him because he wasn't meeting her needs, as well as focusing on stories of runners early in their careers... meaning we don't really know if each given runner is a success story or not.There are some issues, but in all it's not a bad book. If you have aspirations of being a coach, this template approach is actually very helpful, whether or not you follow Hudson's guidelines for mileage, training phases or exercise schedule. If you're an individual runner looking to improve, this is probably helpful only if you want to learn to build your own reliable training plan, and again it's best to take or leave some of the stated general guidelines depending on your needs. If you're just looking for a training plan, there's probably a number of other resources that could serve you better, but this isn't bad.

This is one of the best books on running I've read. It is comprehensive and approachable. Many books and content in the running world focus on the latest fad, and fail to outline the core of every training program. I was blown away by the results I've seen by adding one of the keys to improving running economy: short hill burstsI've run them, but not on a regular cycle within my training. This simple tweak to my training is yielding some impressive adaptations in the first 3 weeks. There is more to be learned from this book, but I initially heard about it from Matt Fitzgerald's podcast, which I highly recommend. The two pair up nicely to provide a great training overview (most of which competitive runners should already be aware of and doing) and tips to get the most out of training and turn that into adaptation.The tables were super helpful also. As was previously noted in another review, because the genitals tend to go fall in the middle of these horizonal images (which are printed in this book spread across both pages), the main action is out of view due to the deep crease in the center fold of the book as a result of there being so many pages. The other primary flaw is the translations. They seem to be brief summaries with a lot of liberty taken, as most of the Japanese passages in the prints are pretty long, but the translations are extremely brief. The only print I had a complete translation of did not match the book's translation at all.On the plus side, it's a nice compilation of a very large number of shunga prints and the colors really pop off the page and the image quality is solid, even if you can't see the whole image due to the crease in the middle and the translations are on the loose side. I would basically describe this as an ideal book to leave somewhere for people to briefly leaf through and be delighted by their find, such as in a bathroom, but a serious reader looking for quality views of the images or scholarly word for word translations will probably be disappointed.

It is hard to imagine that anyone would give this book more than three stars, I guess sex sells anything. The images reproduced are terrific, BUT(!), most of theseprints were made on a horizontal format, the book is printed on a small verticalformat, to make up for this most images are printed across two facing pages.Seeing that sexual organs are usually in the center of the body and consequently at the center of the print most of the sex is obscured by a large deep fold between pages, how stupid! A larger horizontally proportioned book would have made this a five star book but as a visual artist I have to say I feel cheated-whoever designed this book should be publicly flogged!

All the Japanese books from Pie publishing are very beautiful. This book on Shunga is frustrating and beautiful. The pages are too small and trying to open the book to get a sense of the overall picture is hard. So I am left with the wonder of the mixed patterns and textures of garments and skin and exaggerated sexual parts.

This hefty little book offers a rich variety of classic Japanese erotic woodcuts. It spans the whole period of shunga's ascendency, from artists like Moronobu in the late seventeenth century to mid-nineteenth century artists such as Hokusai. By presenting so many eras and artists, Hayakawa also displays the range of visual styles that predominated at various times: passion coyly cloaked beneath rich robes some times, engagement of hugely overblown organs at others, but always with a thread of humor and fun.Although not as large as some picture books, this one comes beautifully printed on heavy stock. The reproductions (in every sense) are bright and clear, and Hayakawa has done an outstanding job of collecting lesser-known images and artists. He organizes the imagery by themes, including places, seasons, positions, moods, and furnishings - which, unlike most Western erotic imagery, contributes heavily towards the voluptuous luxury of many scenes.Hayakawa takes care to translate the calligraphy that adorns each image. This enhances understanding of the pictures, but also gives reason for my one complaint: only younger eyes will be able to pick the tiny lettering out from its noisy background with any ease - a larger font size and more contrast would help. Unlike other anthologists, however, Hayakawa uses endnotes to record the artist, period, and original format of each work. This saves the frustration of becoming enamored with an image or style, but having no way to hunt for more.Even if you already know and love shunga, this could be a valued addition to your library. The number, variety, and quality of prints give lots to enjoy, and at a surprisingly modest price.- wiredweird

I'm a new OR nurse, and my orientation is a bit lacking in specifics. The information I really wanted from my fellowship seems to be contained in this book. It's written in clear language and it's very sensible. Plus there's some neat history. I really, really enjoy reading it. Which is more than I can say for most textbooks.

almost all the questions in Pocket Prep for CNOR have a question/answer reference from this book. if you're studying to take the CNOR exam, I'd get this book to study from!

If you work in the operating room, you really should own this book. It is loaded with excellent information and narrative.

I used Berry & Kohn's Operating Room Technique in nursing school 26 years ago and it is STILL the best text there is about perioperative nursing. This text ranges from basic Aseptic Technique to the more complex surgical procedures. Positioning, procedures, and practice guides make this a must have for anyone in the field of surgery, whether they are a surgical tech, an RN, or an educator. I use it in planning inservices for staff development.

If you are an operating room nurse or surgical technician then this is the book for you. This has been the golden standard for information on Operating Room techniques for years. The information is accurate and reliable.

This book is ok, but apparently the first section is dedicated to Surgical RN's which you won't be reading as a Surgical Tech. student. When you did get to the Surgical tech. information, I felt it could've been a little more specific in some areas.

The book also offers a compelling use of the 'four-fields' in anthropology, which doesn't get done very often, even in American cultural anthropology - thus it can can be quite useful for teaching undergraduates, especially given its accessibility.The book leaves plenty of questions open about immigration, politics, and capitalism, but it hopefully provides critical ethnographic context for how we ought to collectively think about these topics coming into the 21st century - particularly the role of anthropology in helping to build our shared human and non-human futures.

De León's writing is comprehensive, scientific, and emotional. His ethnographic sections humanize the real people that experience the undertaking of immigration. The book serves as an exposé of the U.S. government for those who weren't aware of the depth of border control policies; the graphic descriptions of living, dying, and death in the desert supply the gruesome science of it all. The photography provided by Jason and Michael Wells transports the reader to the desert and the lives of the immigrants that Jason got to know. I can say for sure that this book has cemented U.S. border policy as a human rights issue in my mind, and I am also interested in his Undocumented Migration Project. After seeing him speak at my university, I am moved by the subject, by his methods, and by his success. I look forward to more of his work.

This book is excellent. It frames how the US got to this ridiculous situation with the border with Mexico and provides real insight in to the experience of people who cross. Occasionally uses highly academic terms, but overall an excellent read.

Jason is a former professor of mine, and I was really excited to see that his book had come out. I was not disappointed. It links border policy with its incredibly important humanistic implications. It uses theoretic analysis of bureaucracy alongside some innovative fieldwork to illustrate a truth for people who don't know what's really going on on the border, and in our federal governmental structure. I recommend it to anyone interested in immigration, border issues, or just the general study/intrigue about how seemingly benign power structures perpetuate violence and injustice. Not a happy read, but well well worth it.

I think this book gives great insight on what migrants have to go through when crossing them border to get to America. Even though I do not agree with what the author said about some things, this book was written very well and drew me in from the moment I started reading this book. I would definitely recommend people to read this book to learn a bit about migration and immigration policies.

I think she still has it. Really not sure at all. Maybe. I should ask her. She loves all things anthropology. She is an anthropology major so if you know someone like that, then maybe they will want it too.

If you have any interest in the stories of people from Mexico, Central American or South America who form our wave of migrants from the south, this is a MUST READ book. Fascinating first person stories and great archaeological context. Highly recommended.
